Wolves might deal Love?

Just last year the Timberwolves weren’t sure about what they had in Kevin Love, but he’s now proven his worth. He’s greatly valued by the franchise and they don’t want to see him donning another team’s uniform any time soon. His name continues to pop up in trade rumors Continue reading

NBA star calls his team Immature

The young Minnesota Timberwolves need a leader. Why not Kevin Love? Yes, the power forward is just a third-year man. But with averages this season of 20.8 points and 15.5 rebounds, he’s earned respect throughout the NBA. Love is just 22, but this is a team with just one player older than 25 and nobody in their 30s. Knicks working on deal for guard?

The Knicks would love to add a player like a Luke Ridnour if Minnesota was inclined to move him, but it’s not easy to find a reliable, intelligent backup point guard for a reasonable price in this league. Stan Van Gundy has Jason Williams and Chris Duhon, two players who certainly would be able to handle the role. Williams’ expiring $854,389 is certainly more attractive for the Knicks, but it looks like Williams has moved ahead of Duhon ($3.5M per over three years) on the depth chart. Duhon ran D’Antoni’s system well, he just didn’t have the ability to get to the rim or shoot it consistently. — Newsday

Knicks eye deal for Wolves guard

The Knicks are perusing the league for backup candidates and have held multiple discussions with the Minnesota Timberwolves concerning Sebastian Telfair, according to an executive involved in the discussions. The Timberwolves will probably not make a move until they gauge the health of Jonny Flynn, their young point guard who recently returned from a hip injury. — NY Times

On the other side of things, the Jazz leads the NBA in free throw attempts at 752, followed by the Timberwolves (751), Warriors 744 and Clippers 685. — Stats Inc.

NBA could try to send more vets to D-League?

The willingness of Wolves Johnny Flynn deciding to test out his hip in the D-League, despite being an established NBA player (albeit not nearly as established as Paul Pierce) could open up talks in this summer’s collective bargaining negotiations that might make the player’s association more amenable to veterans being assigned to the D-League for a quick rehab stint before returning full bore in the NBA. The key may be that the veteran is given the option to play in the D-League as opposed to being forced to go down for a rehab stint, like the Flynn assignment — but even then it would open up new opportunities. For NBA clubs, it would offer a chance for players to be sure that they are healthy before being thrust into an actual game that matters to the team’s record.  — Fanhouse

Wolves Kevin Love in class with Shaq, Barkley, Howard

Timberwolves forward Kevin Love‘s two games last month when he scored more than 30 points with more than 20 rebounds was equaled only three times all of last season. And during the NBA’s past 25 years only Charles Barkley, Hakeem Olajuwon and Shaquille O’Neal had at least two 30/20 games in the same month. Love, who is only 22, has had five career games with at least 20 points and 20 rebounds. In the past 25 years, only Dwight Howard, O’Neal and Barkley had more 20/20 games before their 23rd birthday than Love has. — Pioneer Press

Comedian has dinner with Packers QB night before game

Nick Swardson had dinner at Chambers on Saturday with Packers QB Aaron Rodgers, the night before Rodgers thoroughly exorcized his football field demons regarding Brett Favre at the Metrodome. “I know, I’m a traitor,” confessed Swardson with a sly smile. Not really, as a “Fire Childress” joke figured prominently in the St. Paul native’s performance later that night as a star of Vince Vaughn’s “Comedy Roadshow.” The event made its last stop on a national tour at the State Theatre in Minneapolis, Vaughn’s hometown. I assume that Rodgers, like the Timberwolves’ Kevin Love, who was in the audience, has become a friend of Swardson’s because they admire each other’s work. In Swardson’s case, that would be his boyishly ribald humor, which currently includes “Pretend Time,” a show on Comedy Central. — Star Tribune

Wolves Darko talks about fishing

The T’Wolves’ swift decision to lock him up and the prospect of steady playing time has altered Darko Milicic’s outlook    “The only reason I said I want to go back to Europe is because I really didn’t think anybody was going to give me a chance to play,” Milicic told HOOPSWORLD. “Don’t play for three years, play for one year, and not play for half year is tough. It’s just tough when you play and then don’t play. That’s why I said it (about going back to Europe). It wasn’t like I was mad at the league or wanted to leave the league. It wasn’t about that. It was just that the only chance I’d have (to play) would be in Europe.” … Milicic’s shooting woes early in the season (29 percent from the floor) are cause for concern after connecting on 49 percent of his attempts in 2010. But Milicic is confident his shooting stroke will reemerge. “I just got to keep shooting,” explained Milicic to HOOPSWORLD. “Those are my shots. If I can’t make those shots, then I can go fishing. I’m working on those shots and I’m going to start making them soon.” — Hoops World

Wolves Kevin Love on trading block?

One team that would be an ideal fit for Kevin Love, Houston, has explored the possibility to the point of presenting trade scenarios to the Wolves. Those overtures, sources say, have been met with an icy response. Another team to keep an eye on with regard to Love is the Trail Blazers. Wolves Darko shooting 14.3% after getting $20 mil contract

Wolves center Darko Milicic, having major problems with his shooting, was upset with himself after Wednesday’s loss, a game in which he failed to make a field goal for the second consecutive night. Milicic was 0 for 6 against Orlando and 0 for 5 at Miami. In three of the Wolves’ five games, he has gone scoreless from the floor. The 7-foot Serbian is shooting 14.3 percent (4 of 28). “It’s really frustrating to be going through this,” Milicic said. “I don’t know what’s wrong with my shot. I can’t throw it in the ocean. I’m struggling bad the last few games. This is not going to get us anywhere.” Rambis admitted before Wednesday’s game that Milicic is having confidence issues. “He still looks to me like he’s not secure with himself,” Rambis said. “I want him to get to a point where he’s comfortable. Some of it is confidence. Some of it is technique.” Milicic has been misfiring on his left-handed hook shot. Most of the shots have been short.

Blazers accused of trading injured player

According to a league source, the Timberwolves have asked the NBA to look into whether Portland knowingly traded them an injured player when the Blazers dealt Martell Webster to Minnesota for the 16th overall pick in last summer’s draft. Webster on Monday underwent surgery to repair a disk in his back and is expected to miss about six weeks. He said the injury dates to last spring’s playoffs, when he was undercut and fell hard in a game against Phoenix. The Wolves are likely looking for a draft pick as compensation. — Star Tribune

Wolves owner says team won’t be contracted

Former Celtics guard shot over gambling debt?

Law enforcement sources have identified the man shot in Bowie Thursday  as Charles E. Smith IV, a one-time Georgetown University basketball star and former NBA player. The sources said the shooting could have stemmed from a gambling debt. Police were called to a home in the 13200 block of Landsdale Hope Way about 12:20 p.m. for the report of a shooting. Investigators scoured the neighborhood for the shooter, who was reported to be wearing a red hat and armed with a handgun, according to witnesses. Smith’s wounds are not considered life-threatening, the sources said. He remains hospitalized. — ABC 7 Tampa

INFO: Smith played for the Celtics and the Timberwolves during a brief NBA career.

Knicks coach not sold Darko will star for Wolves

The Knicks traded Darko Milicic at the deadline to Minnesota, where he had a strong finish and received a shocking, four-year, $16 million contract. When asked if he was surprised Milicic had reversed his career, D’Antoni remained defiant. “Nothing’s reversed yet except he signed a contract,” he said. “You can bust my chops later, but not yet.”

Celtics work out former Lakers, Clippers scrubs

With training camp less than two weeks away, a handful of players were at the Celtics practice facility yesterday working out for team president Danny Ainge. Adam Morrison, Rashad McCants, Trenton Hassell, and Cuttino Mobley were a few of the names that rung out. “Just taking a look before training camp,’’ Ainge said. “Those guys are all good NBA players. I thought all four guys looked very good, actually.’’ The Celtics have 15 players under contract, but Ainge is still keeping an eye out for shooters. Training camp starts Sept. 28 in Waltham. — Boston Globe

Kings, Wolves, Nets would pass on Carmelo Anthony?

The Nuggets would indeed explore all options if Carmelo Anthony really wants out, especially with teams such as the Timberwolves, Kings and Nets that boast young talent and high draft picks. However, the reality is Anthony’s contract expires at the end of the 2010-11 season, and none of those teams would want to surrender young talent for a guy who may only play with them for a year. Nor is Anthony likely to agree to an extension just so the Nuggets can ship him to basketball Siberia. So there’s a little reality for you. — The Hoops News

Four NBA teams won’t get ONE national TV game

The teams that aren’t scheduled to appear: Minnesota, New Jersey, Toronto and New Orleans. The biggest gainers include two franchises that have been nearly absent from national TV for years. New York, which finally seems to have improved its roster and might give the NBA more presence in the USA’s No. 1 TV market, will get 12 games on TNT and ESPN. Oklahoma City, in the USA’s No. 45 TV market but with a budding superstar in Kevin Durant, will get 15 games, including Sunday afternoon showcase games hosting Miami (Jan. 30) and the Lakers (Feb. 27) on ABC. — USA Today

Wolves owner okay with risks of Darko, Beasley

Kurt Rambis had no problem with the players’ effort. But he needed players who played his style, which is passing and defense. So immediately after the season, he went to president of basketball operations David Kahn and requested a different type of player. Kahn obliged and continues to do so. Team owner Glen Taylor got involved, too, after seeking reasons for Rambis’ request for more athletic players. “Kurt said they were really good kids, but that he just couldn’t get them to play the defense he wanted,” Taylor said Tuesday night. So Kahn and Rambis and Taylor are trying something else. “We talked about what I would call taking some risks,” Taylor said. “The idea is, you bring in these young guys and some of them probably have the potential. We’ve just got to coach them better, or differently, or maybe give them a second chance. I think what we have to do as a team to get up there faster is take some risks.” That means getting more out of some players than other coaches could. For instance: 6-foot-10 forward Michael Beasley and 7-foot center Darko Milicic. “Michael Beasley was drafted No. 2 overall, went down to Miami and hasn’t performed to the level that they expected, for a lot of reasons,” Taylor said. “The same thing with Darko. Darko was drafted No. 2 (by Detroit in 2003).
“I met with Darko last year, and I said, ‘Darko, this may be the first time in your life that a coach has selected you instead of a general manager.’ There’s a huge difference when the general manager selects you but the coach doesn’t select you.” Taylor told Milicic it was Rambis who encouraged Kahn to get Milicic from New York, that Rambis is a guy who will give Milicic a chance.” — Pioneer Press

Ex-Cav Delonte West to Celtics?

One option could be former Celtic Delonte West, who was dealt to Minnesota Monday but is expected to be waived. If the Timberwolves do that by Aug. 5, the full amount of West’s contract is not guaranteed. The Celtics could bring him aboard for a modest price, adding a player known for his ferocious defense, but also for his checkered history off the court. — Boston Globe

Ramon Sessions could lead Cavs?

Ramon Sessions is exactly the type of player the Cavs should be adding at this stage of their life without LeBron James. That’s especially true because the price for Sessions was minimal, in terms of contract ($12 million left over three seasons) and cost in the trade. Delonte West and Sebastian Telfair were shipped to Minnesota, where both are expected to be cut for salary cap purposes. Meanwhile, Sessions could start, or at least be the Cavaliers’ first substitute in the backcourt. — Cleveland Plain Dealer

Wolves dealing point guard?

How many point guards will Luke Ridnour have to compete against for playing time with the Timberwolves? Ridnour was unsure about that while signing a four-year, $16 million contract Wednesday, and so was Wolves president of basketball operations David Kahn. Ridnour, who signed with the Wolves as a free agent after two seasons in Milwaukee, gives the Wolves three point guards, along with Jonny Flynn and Ramon Sessions. Ricky Rubio raises the number to four if the Spanish phenom joins the Wolves in 2011-12 and Ridnour, Flynn and Sessions are still on the roster. That scenario seems highly unlikely. The crowd at point guard is forcing Kahn to prepare Wolves fans for more moves in a busy offseason, perhaps as soon as the club learns the extent of Flynn’s left hip flexor, which forced him to cut back his participation in last week’s summer league in Las Vegas. “It’s not my intent to have three healthy point guards on the roster, and I was very clear with Luke about that,” Kahn said. “I recognize that we have to alleviate the situation.” — Pioneer Press

Lakers player leads active NBA players in money per point scored

Former Lakers backup center D.J. Mbenga has been paid the most of any active player in the NBA, per point he’s scored.

D.J. has been paid $27,054 for everyone of his 355 points scored with the Mavericks, Warriors and LA.

Mbenga is a free agent and is not expected back on Phil Jackson’s bench.

Greg Oden, Portland’s  No. 1 overall bust of a center, has been paid $8,279 per career minute. That’s the most money per minute of all active players.

Among the 442 people who played at least one minute last season in the NBA, only six have earned more career dollars per-minute and per-point than Darko Milicic. In his career, Mr. Milicic has made about $37.8 million—that comes out to $18,251 per point and $5,843 per minute, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Among those who played last season, here are the NBAers who’ve made the most money per minute and per point.

  1. Marcus Haislip, Spurs, $18,612 per career point, $6,778 per career minute.
  2. D.J. Mbenga, Lakers, $27,054 per career point, $7,770 per career min.
