Warriors claim Monta Ellis is healthy

Monta Ellis — who is averaging 25.1 points per game (sixth in the NBA) on 45.9 percent shooting — has struggled the past two games, both at home, totaling just 23 points on 7-for-33 shooting. Any sane basketball follower knows the Warriors don’t have much hope without his scoring. That was evident during the four-game losing streak the Warriors snapped Sunday against the Jazz. In those four losses, Ellis averaged 22.3 points on 35.7 percent shooting. So is anything wrong with Ellis? Is he tired from a league-high 41.1 minutes per game? Is he still bothered by the left ankle he rolled in overtime against Sacramento on Jan. 21? Was his two-point outing against the Jazz a product of cobwebs after he banged his head in Friday’s loss to Charlotte? coach Keith Smart said, emphatically and consistently, that nothing was wrong. And Ellis dismissed any notions that he’s hobbled at all. “It wasn’t anything with fatigue, no problems going on,” Ellis said. “My shot just wasn’t going. I just wasn’t feeling it on the offensive end.” — Oakland Tribune

Warriors Stephen Curry to Clippers?

Warriors guard Stephen Curry is younger, is an elite shooter, shares the ball and isn’t owed big long-term money. He would be extremely attractive on the trade market. The point is, if the Warriors need to move somebody to land a big-man difference-maker, their other options are limited. So how would the Warriors possibly make the move for a big man? By dangling Curry or Ellis. It’s not preferable, but teams don’t offer up good young centers for mediocre players. This might not happen by Feb. 24, but the Warriors have to do the groundwork now. NBA star out with toothache in arm

David Lee, the Golden State Warriors’ 6-9 forward and leading rebounder, didn’t play against the Bulls on Thursday night after injuring his left arm Wednesday. He inadvertently hit former DePaul star Wilson Chandler in the mouth during a victory over the New York Knicks. ”I took a tooth to the arm last night. [Knicks coach Mike D'Antoni] had his guys biting me,” Lee joked. The collision sent Chandler’s tooth flying toward the sideline, and the game was suspended while officials looked for it. ”They found a little part of it in my arm,” Lee said. ”I woke up with unbelievable pain.” — Chicago Sun-Times

Warriors David Lee expects Knicks fans to cheer him

David Lee has five double-doubles in seven games, tied for second-most in the NBA, and his All-Star replacement, Amar’e Stoudemire, who got a $100 million free-agent contract as a final lure for James, has two in his first six games. Lee expects the Knicks’ faithful to cheerily greet him before the game and boo him thoroughly throughout. He got his first taste Tuesday, when he walked the Manhattan sidewalks, visiting his old barber and his favorite Italian lunch spot. “It’s emotional,” Lee said. “I’ll get a warm reception. The people who work for the team and the crowd, those are the finest memories I have from here. “They’ve always supported me, but they have to support their team now.” — San Francisco Chronicle
