It will be interesting whether the Vikings in the next week try to designate either linebacker Chad Greenway or wideout Sidney Rice as a franchise player or transition player to prevent them from becoming a free agent before next season. If the Vikings are confident they can re-sign Greenway, and are banking that a new labor deal will require that players have five years of service time instead of four before they can become free agents, Rice would seem to be a franchise designation with his four years of service time. — Pioneer Press
