T. Boone Pickens understands UConn donor’s anger

One person, at least, says he understands where Connecticut donor Robert G. Burton is coming from. “You always have time for people who are putting up the money. That just makes all the sense in the world,” T. Boone Pickens said Thursday, one uber-booster speaking on behalf of another. “You can’t ignore those people. I mean, they’ve paid their money, and they’re entitled to be informed.” — USA Today

Big East school to lose big money on BCS Bowl

The Fiesta Bowl distributed 17,500 tickets to Oklahoma and Connecticut each, and both schools are on the hook to sell them all. Problem is, UConn had sold only 4,000 tickets as of Monday night. OU doesn’t release ticket sales, but a UConn official told our Berry Tramel the Sooners were only doing a little better with 8,000 tickets sold at the beginning of the week. And that’s including the Ticket for Troops promotion where fans are encouraged to buy bowl tickets and that can be donated to military personnel stationed in the area of the bowl game. The good news for the Sooners is that any of their unsold tickets are picked up by the Big 12 Conference. But the Huskies won’t be so lucky. Continue reading

UConn’s Randy Edsall up for ACC job?

One coach believed to be near the top of Miami AD Kirby Hocutt’s list, Connecticut coach Randy Edsall, was not there Monday. According to an UConn spokesman, Edsall was out of town recruiting. Meanwhile, Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen and Stanford coach Jim Harbaugh might be out of the mix for Miami. Mullen said Sunday on a conference call about his team’s Gator Bowl game that he’s working on a new contract at MSU. “The only administrator I’ve talked to at any university about coaching football is [Mississippi State athletic director] Scott Stricklin,” Mullen said. “There are a lot of great things I think we can get done here at Mississippi State that I want to accomplish here. I plan on being the head coach here for a long time.” Stanford athletic director Bob Bowlsby told reporters on a call Sunday that he had presented Harbaugh with a new contract and “he’s indicated he plans to sign it.” — South Florida Sun-Sentinel

UConn’s Randy Edsall could turn down Gophers, Canes’

It’s no wonder that speculation has been rampant that Minnesota and Miami, Fla., have interest in UConn coach Randy Edsall. But to be honest, I don’t see why Edsall would be interested in either the Gophers or the Hurricanes. At best, both jobs would constitute a sideways move. Minnesota is a perennial Big Ten also-ran. Its head-coaching position should be listed in the want ads as a “dead-end job.” Coaches who venture there are often never heard from again. On the surface, the Miami job may appear to be a move up for Edsall. The Hurricanes are a national brand and boast five national titles in the last 30 years. But look a little deeper, and there are major concerns in Coral Gables, Fla. Miami is a pro football town that only supports the Hurricanes when they are huge winners. Miami’s home stadium is off campus. The other football facilities are wanting. And over the past five years, the Hurricanes are a pedestrian 35-28. If those are his best options, Edsall would be better off staying at UConn, where he has constructed a respected program from almost the ground up. He’s skillfully guided the Huskies from NCAA Division I-AA to Division I-A independent to Big East power. It’s a record to be envied. — York Dispatch

UConn’s Randy Edsall on hot seat?

If UConn struggles again Friday night against a West Virginia team it has never beaten, expect the complaints to continue, if not intensify. But Randy Edsall seems secure in what he is doing, even if he might not be entirely secure in his job. “I’m the same guy I was last year when we beat Notre Dame and South Carolina [and] when we won the Big East championship,” Edsall said. “Like I said, I didn’t get stupid overnight. “In this profession you’re nuts if you take any pats on the back. All those people that tell you how good you are, now those same people are telling you how bad you are and how you stink and all that stuff. ‘ — Charleston Gazette

Syracuse, Rutgers, UConn, Army and Notre Dame battle to own NYC

The relationship between college football and the city is one of the wackiest things in New York sports. The last significant game played in the area was in 2002. Only one market in the entire country had a lower TV rating for last year’s BCS national-championship game (New York was 55th, Providence, R.I., was 56th). So there’s a case to be made that being New York’s college-football team in recent years is a bit like being Albuquerque’s curling team. But a confluence of new stadiums, new strategies to take New York and even a bowl game has resulted in something the city hasn’t seen in years: a crowded college-football landscape, a heightened battle to be the region’s team and, dare we say, a college-football renaissance in New York.
