NFL owner says he’s not selling his franchise

Texans owner Bob McNair shakes his head when someone points out how, whether the team wins or loses on Sunday afternoons and whether coach Gary Kubiak stays or goes, the investors always win because of the franchise’s equity growth – more than 40 percent, if you believe Forbes. “Don’t pay attention to the valuations you read about,” he argues. “Those people publish magazines. They don’t buy teams. And it does you no good anyway if you have no intention of selling, which I don’t.”Houston Chronicle

Cowboys favorites to land Raiders defensive star?

Oakland Raiders CB Nnamdi Asomugha is set to become a free agent this offseason and Jerry Jones would is the favorite to land him. The Dallas Cowboys are the favorites to sign…

Rams Danny Amendola is NFL’s hardest worker

  • Cowboys star DeMarcus Ware won the sack title for the second time in four years, and has 60.5 in his last 64 regular-season games. All-time sack champ Bruce Smith’s best total over any four-year span was 55.
  • In Jack Del Rio’s eight seasons with Jacksonville, the Jags have finished second in the AFC South five times and gone 66-65 including playoffs. Considering the state of the fan base and the general lack of star power (11 total Pro Bowl selections), that’s not half bad.
  • Miami’s Dan Carpenter attempted 26 field goals of 40+ yards, most since Mark Moseley tried 28 during the 1977 season. Moseley hit 13 of his 28; Carpenter 15 of 26. Moseley did it with much more Old School flair.
  • St. Louis Ram Danny Amendola quietly had one of the most remarkable seasons in NFL history. Not only did he have 90 combined punt and kick returns, most in the league, but he caught 85 passes. That is an unheard of amount of abuse for one player to take in a single season. But it paid off with the 17th most all-purpose yards in an NFL season (2,364).
  • 24-year-old Arian Foster won the rushing title with 1,616 yards, following 23-year-old Chris Johnson in 2009 and 24-year-old Adrian Peterson in 2008. Only one player over 30 has ever won a rushing title – 31-year-old Curtis Martin in 2004.
  • When the Titans decide to move Vince Young, there should certainly be a nice market for a guy who had an 88.7 passer rating and a 12-6 record in 2009-10. Kerry Collins? He had a 74.9 rating and a 2-11 record.
  • Mike Shanahan’s Broncos were outscored by 78 points during the 2008 season. Here in 2010, his Redskins were outscored by 75 points.
  • Over their final 12 games, the Broncos allowed 400+ yards eight times and 30+ points seven times.

Pats have .967 winning % when scoring 30+

  • Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger is 11-1 (.917) all-time vs. NFC at Heinz Field with 16 TDs vs. 8 INTs & 90.9 passer rating.  In 5 home games in ’10, Roethlisberger has passed for 10 TDs vs. 2 INTs for 98.3 rating.

  • New England Patriots are 59-2 (.967) when scoring 30+ points under Bill Belichick.
  • New York Jets have 11-4 road record (.733) under head coach Rex Ryan.
  • Jets are 12-2 (.857) when QB Mark Sanchez has 80+ rating.
  • When QB Jay Cutler has 100+ rating, his teams (Bears, Broncos) are 20-0.
  • Jaguars QB David Garrard has single-season franchise record w/ 22 TD passes.  At home this season, Garrard has completed 108 of 172 passes (62.8 pct.) for 1,242 yards w/ 12 TDs vs. 6 INTs & 93.2 passer rating.  Ranks 1st in NFL w/ 115.8 4th-quarter rating
  • Titans QB Kerry Collins (39,906) needs 94 passing yards to become 12th QB in NFL history w/ 40,000 career.
  • Chiefs QB Matt Cassel has 10 TDs vs. 1 INT & 99.3 rating at home in ’10
  • Texans RB Arian Foster (1,345) aims to become 2nd undrafted player since 1967 to lead NFL in rushing yards (Priest Holmes – 1,555 w/ KC in ’01).  Leads NFL w/ 13 rush TDs & needs rush TD to surpass Domanick Williams (13 in ’04) for most in season in club history.  Foster (1,895) needs 105 yards to become 1st player in franchise history w/ 2,000 scrimmage yards.
  • Chargers QB Philip Rivers is 10-0 as starter on road in Dec. w/ 19 TDs vs. 5 INTs & 99.3 rating.
  • Falcons QB Matt Ryan is 19-1 (.950) at home as starter.  Aims for 16th consecutive home win.  Has posted 100+ rating 15 times & Falcons are 15-0.

Texans Foster, Johnson have chance at NFL record book

With three games remaining, Texans running back Arian Foster and wide receiver Andre Johnson have a chance to become the third pair of teammates in NFL history to lead the league in rushing and receiving yards in the same season. Running back Edgerrin James (1,553 yards) and wide receiver Marvin Harrison (1,663) did it for the Colts in 1999. Emmitt Smith (1,563) and Michael Irvin (1,523) did it for the Cowboys in 1991. Nobody else has done it, dating back before the AFL-NFL merger all the way to 1932. — HoustonTexans.com

Texans could shutdown DE Mario Williams?

Texans coach Gary Kubiak, on the possibility of shutting down Mario Williams for the remainder of the season: “If Mario can help us win, (if) he can play 25-30 plays which he played last night, then we want him to play and we’ll do everything we can to get him to gameday. If our doctors think that it’s not possible and we would hurt Mario in the long haul, then we will do what’s right by Mario. So that continues to be evaluated.” Williams has yet to miss a game in his five-year career. — HoustonTexans.com

Colts have NFL’s best offensive line

The New York Life Protection Index was created by sports information leader STATS to provide a composite gauge for this undervalued component of the game. While the New York Life Protection Index is calculated using a proprietary formula, the fundamentals are comprised of the length of a team’s pass attempts combined with penalties by offensive linemen, sacks allowed and quarterback hurries and knockdowns. Browns Peyton Hillis joins Rams legend in NFL record book

·        Atlanta quarterback Matt Ryan led the Falcons to a 20-17 win over Green Bay.  With the victory, Ryan improved to 19-1 (.950) in his career as the starter at home, tying Danny White for the best winning percentage in a player’s first 20 starts at home among QBs who began their careers in the Super Bowl era (since 1966). Ryan completed 24 of 28 passes for an 85.7 completion percentage, the 11th time in NFL history in which a quarterback posted a completion percentage of at least 85.7 with 28 or more attempts in a game.

·        Cleveland running back Peyton Hillis rushed for 131 yards with three touchdowns and added six receptions for 63 yards in the Browns’ 24-23 victory over Carolina. Hillis joins Marshall Faulk (September 17, 2000) as the only players in NFL history to record at least 130 rushing yards, three rushing touchdowns, six receptions and 60 receiving yards in a single game.  Hillis has 11 rushing touchdowns this year and joins Pro Football Hall of Famer Jim Brown and Leroy Kelly as the only Browns to rush for at least 11 touchdowns in a season.

·        Houston wide receiver Andre Johnson had nine receptions in the Texans’ 20-0 win over Tennessee. Johnson has 65 catches this year and is the first player in NFL history to record at least 60 receptions in each of his first eight seasons.

·        Chicago quarterback Jay Cutler threw four touchdown passes in the Bears’ 31-26 victory over Philadelphia, his third game as a Bear with four TD passes.  Cutler joins Pro Football Hall of Famer Sid Luckman (four times) and Billy Wade (three) as the only Bears to throw four or more touchdowns in a game at least three times.

·        Kansas City wide receiver Dwayne Bowe had 13 catches for 170 yards and three touchdowns in the Chiefs’ 42-24 win at Seattle. Bowe joins Pro Football Hall of Famer Jerry Rice (October 14, 1990 and December 18, 1995) and Jimmy Smith (September 10, 2000) as the only players since 1990 to record at least 13 catches, 170 receiving yards and three touchdown receptions in a game.

·        New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning played in his 100th career game and completed 14 of 24 passes for 226 yards with two touchdowns in the Giants’ 24-20 win over Jacksonville. Manning holds franchise records for the most completions (1,838), attempts (3,169), passing yards (21,465) and passing touchdowns (148) in a player’s first 100 games as a Giant.

·        Cleveland rookie cornerback Joe Haden had an interception in the Browns’ win over Carolina, marking the third consecutive game he has recorded an interception.  He is the first Browns player with an interception in three consecutive games in his first NFL season since Bernie Parrish in 1959.

Texans owner NOT happy with team’s performance

Owner Bob McNair made it clear Wednesday that he’s not happy with the Texans’ 4-6 record but that he has faith in his players and believes they will end their four-game losing streak Sunday against Tennessee. “None of us are happy with the performance of our team,” McNair said after practice. “We are underperforming. Our coaches know that and say that. The players know that and say that. We’ve got to turn this thing around, and the way we’ll do it is by playing 60 minutes.” McNair also wanted to clarify something he said after Sunday’s 30-27 loss to the New York Jets. McNair said when he made his comment about the coaches and players doing a “great job,” he was talking about the fourth-quarter rally against the Jets and not the season. “I was speaking about the game. I was very proud of that comeback,” McNair said. “I was not making any reference to a critique of the coaches or players by saying they were great. “We let that one slip away. You can’t win games playing 59 minutes, and that was the big disappointment. We have to learn to play 60 minutes and get these things closed out.” — Houston Chronicle

Bengals Terrell Owens to join Rice, Moss in NFL record book

Ryan Fitzpatrick, who was named the Bills starting quarterback in Week 3, has 13 touchdowns passes in six games.  Fitzpatrick is on pace (30) to become the second Buffalo quarterback to register 30+ touchdown passes in a season, joining Pro Football Hall of Famer Jim Kelly (33 in 1991)

Ravens DT Haloti Ngata leads the club with five sacks and is on target (10) to become the first NFL defensive tackle since Warren Sapp (10) in 2006 to reach 10 sacks in a season.

Bengals WR Terrell Owens has reached 1,000 receiving yards nine times in his career and is pace (770; 1,540) to join Pro Football Hall of Fame WR Jerry Rice (14) and Titans WR Randy Moss (10) as the only players to have at least 10 seasons with 1,000 receiving yards in NFL history.

RB Peyton Hillis, who was acquired via trade by the Browns in March, leads the team with 644 rushing yards and seven rushing touchdowns. Hillis is on pace (1,288 rush yards, 14 rush TDs) to join Jim Brown, Leroy Kelly and Mike Pruitt as the only running backs in franchise history to have 1,000 rushing yards and 10 rushing touchdowns in a season.

Texans WR Andre Johnson has 14 career games of 10 receptions and 100 receiving yards and needs two such games this season to surpass Pro Football Hall of Famer Jerry Rice (15) and Marvin Harrison (14) for the most in NFL history.

Four-time MVP QB Peyton Manning of the Colts has 2,478 passing yards and is on pace (4,956) to join Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterbacks Dan Fouts (1980-81) and Warren Moon (1990-91) as the only players in NFL history to have consecutive seasons with 4,500 passing yards.

Jaguars QB David Garrard has 13 touchdown passes in seven games and is on track (27) to surpass Mark Brunell (20 in 1998 and 2000) for the most touchdown passes in a season in franchise history

Acquired via trade by the Dolphins in April, WR Brandon Marshall has been a welcome addition in Miami.  Marshall, who has reached 100 receptions in each of the past three seasons, is on target (52; 104) to join Marvin Harrison as the only players to have 100 receptions in four consecutive seasons in NFL history.

Texans owner gives coach vote of confidence

For those Texans fans angry at the team’s 4-4 record and demanding that coach Gary Kubiak be fired at the midway part of the season, it isn’t going to happen. “That’s not how we run this ship,” owner Bob McNair said Monday night. “Gary’s doing a good job. Replacing him doesn’t help you catch more balls.” After starting 2-0, including the season-opening victory over Indianapolis, the Texans have gone 2-4. They are 2-3 at Reliant Stadium. A lot of fans blame Kubiak and want him fired even though he signed an extension through the 2012 season. “You’re always going to be criticized if you don’t win every game,” McNair said. “That’s just part of it. If you win, the criticism goes away. “I think he’s doing fine. He’s not out there making the blocks and catching the ball, and that’s what hurt us. If you replace the coach, will it be easier for the guy who missed the block to make it? I don’t think so. “If he was making bad decisions, if he wasn’t managing the team and if the players weren’t playing hard, that would be cause for concern. But our players are playing hard.” — Houston Chronicle

Former Saints DE gets tryout with Saints

The Cincinnati Bengals tried out veteran defensive end Bobby McCray on Wednesday, according to a league source with knowledge of the situation. Cut by the New Orleans Saints earlier this year, McCray has been on the NFL workout circuit this fall. Cut after starting 32 games and recording 7 1/2 sacks over the previous two seasons for the Saints, including the Super Bowl, McCray has tried out for three other teams this season. That includes the Tennessee Titans, Houston Texans and the Oakland Raiders. — National Football Post

Texans worst defense since 1989

The Texans, who lost to the Colts, 30-17, on Monday night, are the first team since the 1989 Cowboys to allow at least 24 points in each of their first seven games of a season. That team finished with a 1-15 record, in what was the first year for Jerry Jones, Jimmy Johnson and Troy Aikman in Dallas. — Elias Sports Bureau

Texans defense has players-only

Several Texans defensive players spoke Thursday about a call-to-arms players-only meeting end Antonio Smith was behind a couple of days ago.  Although none gave specifics of what was said, all agreed it was productive and tackle Shaun Cody said, “overdue, I think.” Last in the NFL in yards allowed and having to go forward without their middle linebacker and captain, DeMeco Ryans, the Texans would seem in dire straits heading to Indianapolis for a Monday night game. Smith apparently made a plea to his teammates that they all pick up the pace while admitting he wasn’t playing well enough, either. “Antonio is a leader on our defense and he had some good things for us to hear,” Cody said. “But it’s got to be more than about words. We’ve got to go out there (on the field) and do it. We’ve got some things to figure out on defense.” — Houston Chronicle

Texans LB Brian Cushing moves to middle

When the Texans returned to practice Monday to begin preparation for next Monday night’s game at Indianapolis, Brian Cushing was playing middle linebacker. Before they broke for their five-day vacation last week, the coaches talked about Kevin Bentley and Zac Diles as possible replacements for DeMeco Ryans, who underwent surgery on Friday to repair a ruptured Achilles’ tendon. Cushing will start in the middle against the Colts. Bentley, who backed up Ryans, will replace Cushing on the strong side. Diles, who replaced Ryans in the 35-31 victory over Kansas City, will remain on the weak side. “We thought that was the best thing for our team,” coach Gary Kubiak said about Cushing’s move. “We want him to take over our defense. “I think it’s about leadership right now with our defense and getting better as a group and somebody taking the group over. We took all that into account, and No. 56 was the best guy to step in and lead our defense.” — Houston Chronicle

Seahawks dropped 17 spots in NFL popularity contest

These are some of the results of The Harris Poll of 2,620 adults surveyed online about the NFL between September 14 and 20, 2010 by Harris Interactive. Certain teams have moved up or down more than others this year. While the Saints’ jump up 19 spots is the biggest move, other movement includes the following:

  • The Seattle Seahawks dropped 17 places on the list from a tie for number 14 last year to number 31 (out of 32) this year;
  • The Tennessee Titans dropped 12 places from number 9 to a tie for number 21;
  • The Baltimore Ravens moved up seven places, from number 26 to number 19; and
  • Two teams moved up 6 places each – the St. Louis Rams, from number 30 to number 24, and the Houston Texans, from number 23 to a tie at number 17.
  • For the second year in a row, the Jacksonville Jaguars (32) are at the bottom of the list.
  • One in five Americans who follow professional football (20%) believe the New Orleans Saints will repeat and win the Super Bowl again. One in ten believe it will be the New England Patriots (11%) or Indianapolis Colts (9%), while smaller numbers believe it will be the Green Bay Packers (7%), the Minnesota Vikings (6%) or the Baltimore Ravens (6%). All teams have their die-hard fans and at least a few people believe their team will win the Super Bowl this season.
  • Over half of Americans (53%) say they follow professional football, a slight increase from last year when 51% said so. As might be expected, men are more likely than women to follow football (66% versus 41%). Over half (56%) of both Gen Xers (those 34-45) and Baby Boomers (those 46-64) say they follow football compared to just under half (49%) of both Echo Boomers (those 18-33) and Matures (those 65 and older) who do.

Texans, Rams local TV ratings up 51%

Bengals Terrell Owens is second to Jerry Rice

New York Jets running back La Dainian Tomlinson rushed for 133 yards in the Jets’ 38-14 win at Buffalo.  Tomlinson, who now has 25 games with at least 100 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns, tied Pro Football Hall of Famer Jim Brown for the most such games in NFL history. Cincinnati wide receiver Terrell Owens had 10 catches for 222 yards and a touchdown in the Bengals’ 23-20 loss at Cleveland.  It marked the third 200-yard receiving game of his career, tied for the fifth-most in NFL history.  Owens is one of only eight players all-time with at least three 200-yard receiving games and he is the only player to record a 200-yard receiving game with three different teams (Cincinnati, Dallas, San Francisco).  Owens has 15,325 career receiving yards and surpassed Isaac Bruce (15,208) for the second-most receiving yards in NFL history.

Indianapolis quarterback Peyton Manning had 352 passing yards in the Colts’ 31-28 loss at Jacksonville.  Manning has 51,493 passing yards and surpassed Pro Football Hall of Famer John Elway (51,475) for the second-most passing yards in NFL history.  Manning and center Jeff Saturday started their 158th game together, passing Buffalo’s Jim Kelly and Kent Hull (157) for the most games started by a quarterback-center combination since the 1970 merger.

Green Bay cornerback Charles Woodson had a 48-yard interception-return touchdown in the Packers’ 28-26 victory over the Detroit Lions.  Woodson has 10 career interception-return touchdowns and joined Pro Football Hall of Famer Rod Woodson (12) and Saints safety Darren Sharper (11) as the only players in NFL history to have at least 10 INT-TDs.

San Diego tight end Antonio Gates had seven catches for 144 yards and two touchdowns in the Chargers’ 41-10 victory over the Arizona Cardinals.  Gates has 503 receptions in 101 career games, reaching 500 receptions in the fewest games by a tight end in NFL history.

Houston running back Arian Foster rushed for 131 yards and had 56 receiving yards in the Texans’ 31-24 win at Oakland.  Foster (537 rush yards, 152 receiving yards) became the third running back in NFL history to total more than 500 rushing yards and 100 receiving yards in the first four games of a season, joining Pro Football Hall of Famer Emmitt Smith and Billy Sims.

DE Aaron Schobel won’t be joining Texans

The Texans’ flirtation with defensive end Aaron Schobel is over. After weeks of speculation that he would come out of retirement, play for the Texans and be reunited with assistant head coach defensive line Bill Kollar, Schobel worked out for the team Monday but elected to stay retired on Tuesday. “It’s late (in the signing process), and I’m not in the best of shape. (But) the bottom line is that we couldn’t come to an agreement,” Schobel said Tuesday from his home in Columbus. “I think they saw me for what I am and not for what I can be. “I’d gotten heavy, but I’ve lost weight. I’m still probably 10 pounds away from being at my best. It would have taken me another week or two to get into (playing) shape.” The Texans were interested in Schobel to bolster their pass rush. They have five sacks in three games, four by Mario Williams. – Houston Chronicle
