Sixers love Evan Turner’s future

For Sixers forward Evan Turner, the time off probably will entail rest and a trip back home. He was not selected to be on the rookie team, which is chosen by voting among assistant coaches.

Sixers’ make Andre Iguodala the go-to guy

Sixers coach Doug Collins believes he has Andre Iguodala, all of Iguodala, on board with whatever comes next for this team. “And I’m going to start using him more as a point-forward because I think he’s a triple-double guy,” Collins explained. “He’s a very, very unselfish player. He loves to pass. Through the first half of the season, the burden of ballhandling has fallen primarily on the shoulders of point guard Jrue Holiday, with backup guard Lou Williams handling on designated possessions. Whether devised as an alternative to Holiday, who has made some crucial turnovers in recent weeks, or just acting on a hunch that Iguodala’s game is about to skyrocket, Collins said he’s going to make an effort to start using Iguodala “a lot” as a point-forward. — Philadelphia Inquirer

Sixers star close to untradeable with $44 mil left on contract

Opportunities absolutely do exist for the Sixers to receive expiring contracts for Andre Iguodala, although the level of “basketball value” the Sixers could find in return is probably uneven to the level of “basketball value” Iguodala possesses. The discrepancy exists because of Iguodala’s over-the-top contract, on which he is still owed approximately $44 million through the 2013-14 season. — Philadelphia Inquirer

Former NBA player loses $12 million on real estate deal

The St. Pete Times reports that after nearly four years, former Sixer Matt Geiger has finally unloaded his 28,000-square-foot, six-bedroom mansion in Tarpon Springs, Fla., for $8 million. It went on the market for $20 million. The house, which sits on nearly 28 acres, has a shark tank and 330,000-gallon swimming pool with a rock-diving cliff, and at one time had 40 TV sets – 18 wired with Xbox so Geiger and his pals could play video games. The paper also reports that at one time, Geiger, who grew up in nearby Clearwater, had 12 buffalo, 11 Watusi cattle, two donkeys, a miniature horse, and a cow. — Philadelphia Inquirer

Porn star to attend Sixers/Lakers game

While Mary Carey is retired from hardcore porn, she still models nude on her website ClubMaryCarey.com and hopes to return to town in February for 610 WIP’s Wing Bowl, where she had a great time last year. “I love Wing Bowl. I don’t think it would work in any other state that there would be thousands of drunk people at 6 a.m. watching people eat chicken wings,” Carey said yesterday. Carey, a huge fan of Philadelphia, likes the abundance of pierogies that she finds in town and also plans to take in the Sixers/Lakers game Friday and the Flyers game Saturday afternoon. The last time Carey and the Sixers were mentioned together was when she revealed to us that former Sixer Jason Smith was the mystery baller she made out with at a New York club after a New York Post report that didn’t identify the player. She won’t be seducing any Sixers tomorrow as she will attend the game with her husband of more than a year, Mario Monge. — Philadelphia Daily News

NBA legends home going into foreclosure

NBA legend Julius Erving is about to lose his 6,700 sq. ft. house in Utah … because it’s about to go into foreclosure. The house — which the former basketball star has been trying to sell for over a year — went into pre-foreclosure last month … after Dr. J defaulted on his loan. Erving tells TMZ, the house is “substantially underwater” — meaning he owes more than it’s worth. — NY Post

Sixers star to Knicks?

Rival execs agree that New York would be a logical landing spot for Andre Iguodala, and they believe the Sixers will be more than open to discussing trades for the dynamic but high-priced swingman as the Feb. 24 deadline approaches. The Knicks, one of the few teams in a position to absorb salary in the uncertain labor environment, also would be looking for an attractive piece to pair with Stoudemire in the event the Nuggets follow through with an Anthony trade prior to the deadline. Team president Donnie Walsh would have to decide if, short of Anthony, Iguodala is the best option that will be available to him between now and 2011 free agency — if and when that happens.  — CBS Sports

Sixers deny trying to trade star player

Team president Rod Thorn denied a published report, citing unnamed sources, claiming the Sixers are “attempting to trade” swingman Andre Iguodala. In an email response Sunday, Thorn said the Sixers are “trying to ascertain the value of all of our players. Big difference.” — The Intelligencer

Comic fools NBA rookie with “your shoes are untied” line

Spike Lee has some competition in the Knicks cheerleading department. Tracy Morgan entertained fellow comic Chris Rock, taxi tycoon Andrew Murstein and the rest of celebrity row during last Sunday’s Knick game at the Garden with his running commentary. The “30 Rock” actor rattled 76ers rookie Evan Turner by screaming “Your shoes are untied!” and christened new Knick Landry Fields “Aqua” because “Man, you’re smooth, smooth like water.” — NY Daily News

Sixers coach Collins not expected to miss any more games

Sixers coach Doug Collins, who missed the second half of Wednesday night’s game due to symptoms of vertigo, is not expected to miss any more game time. Collins is expected to be on the bench for the 76ers’ game on Friday night against the Cleveland Cavaliers, according to a source close to the coach. Collins missed a preseason game in Cincinnati due to dizziness and headaches, which were later confirmed as symptoms of vertigo stemming from a fall in May in which Collins broke three ribs and hit his head. — Philadelphia Inquirer

Sixers pass on Thaddeus Young extension

The 76ers have chosen not to extend the fifth year of Thaddeus Young’s rookie contract, allowing Young to become a restricted free agent. The deadline for an extension passed at 5 p.m. yesterday. That doesn’t mean the Sixers aren’t interested in retaining Young, the No. 12 overall pick in the NBA’s 2007 draft; they hold a right of first refusal on any offer to the forward from another team in the league. “We’ve had conversations with Rod [Sixers president Rod Thorn], and that’s where I’ll leave it,” said Jim Tanner, Young’s agent. Young is listed at slightly more than $2.9 million on the Sixers’ salary cap. To retain his rights, the Sixers must make a qualifying offer of 125 percent of that salary before July 1, 2011. Sources have indicated that Tanner, interested in a new contract for his client, has mentioned a deal worth more than $10 million. – Philadelphia Inquirer

No. 2 pick Evan Turner NOT starting for 76ers

Rookie Evan Turner will not be in the starting lineup, which might disappoint many Sixers fans considering he was the second overall pick in the draft. But Turner understands that this is a learning process and not starting now, or getting huge minutes, might not be the norm in the future. — Philadelphia Daily News

Philadelphia Spectrum’s 10-ton scoreboard for sale

Free to a good home: The Spectrum’s scoreboard. There are a few catches, says Lou Scheinfeld, helping Comcast-Spectacor liquidate the doomed arena’s contents before its demolition next month. “It’s as big as a house, weighs 20,000 pounds, and has no spare parts,” Scheinfeld says. The new owner would have to hire electricians and carpenters – union members, as this is Philadelphia – to take the 30-by-40-foot behemoth apart and put it back together. So far, six people inquired about the scoreboard, got the lowdown, and said, “No, thanks,” he said. — Philadelphia Inquirer

NBA coach suffering from concussion

Perhaps that’s why it took so long for head coach Doug Collins to give in to the headaches and dizziness he has been suffering since he fell in a coffee shop on Memorial Day and sustained a concussion. Yesterday morning, after a meeting with his assistant coaches in preparation for last night’s game against the Cleveland Cavaliers, Collins revealed that he needed to return to Philadelphia to get checked out. He flew out early yesterday afternoon and had a neurological appointment yesterday at Lankenau Hospital. In his absence, associate coach Michael Curry ran the team in its next-to-last preseason game against the Cleveland Cavaliers at U.S. Bank Arena, a 111-95 Sixers loss. “He told us this morning, he hadn’t said anything before,” said Curry after the team’s morning shootaround. “Hopefully they’ll run the tests and hopefully he’ll be good. I haven’t noticed any difference. We’ve been meeting a lot and going over a lot of things in preparation for these next two games and for the start of the season. We’ve been together a lot and spent a lot of hours together. I haven’t seen anything different.” Collins’ availability for tonight’s final preseason game at the Wells Fargo Center against the New York Knicks hasn’t been determined. Most likely he will sit out. The team has an off day tomorrow before resuming practice Friday in preparation for the regular-season opener against the visiting Miami Heat on Oct. 27. — Philadelphia Daily News

Allen Iverson could make $2 million in Turkey

According to Turkish reports, the arrival of Allen Iverson in Turkey could only be “a matter of time”. The former Philadelphia Sixer seems to be okay with the salary, estimated at $1.5 million a year with a bonus of $500K if Besiktas is Turkish champion or if the club reaches the EuroCup Final Four. Of course, nothing is official until the club makes an announcement or if something comes directly from Iverson’s agent. But more and more details arrive about the negotiations and everything seems to show that a deal could be reached very soon. — Hoops Notes
