NFL has most balance since 1981

For the first time since 1981, no NFL team has fewer than two losses midway thought the season. Las Vegas Sports Consultants provides wagering lines to Las Vegas sports books, and the odds to win Super Bowl XLV have more teams than usual at low odds. Here they are: Steelers the 6-to-1 favorite; Giants, Jets, Patriots and Ravens each 7-to-1; Colts, Packers and Saints each 8-to-1; Falcons 9-to-1; Eagles 18-to-1; Vikings 25-to-1; Chiefs 30-to-1; Bears, Chargers and Titans each 35-to-1 (very tempting); Dolphins, Redskins and Texans each 50-to-1; Buccaneers, 49ers, Rams and Seahawks each 60-to-1; Raiders 75-to-1; Cardinals 150-to-1; Bengals, Jaguars and Lions each 250-to-1; Broncos and Browns each 500-to-1; Cowboys 1,000-to-1; Panthers 3,000-to-1; and Bills 5,000-to-1. — Rochester Democrat & Chronicle

Brian Bosworth gets award for hair

Head & Shoulders crowned NFL legend Brian Bosworth the fan awarded title of “Most Iconic NFL Hair of All Time”. Recognized for his hair style, the “Boz cut”, Brian will be inducted as the winner of head & shoulders’ Mane Event, a throw down between eight NFL legends with iconic hair. While Brian takes home this coveted title, head & shoulders spokesman Troy Polamalu’s ridiculously full and thick curls continue to carry the ultimate hair torch as his million dollar Samoan locks now bear the prestigious honor of earning a Guinness World Record® title as “Highest Insured Hair”. — Head & Shoulders

Seahawks won’t seek Randy Moss?

Don’t expect Randy Moss to join the list of big-ticket receivers sought by the Seahawks. The expectation is Moss will be waived by Minnesota. All 32 teams would then be free to place a claim on Moss, indicating they are willing to acquire his contract and pay the remainder of his salary, which equates to more than $16 million. Indications are the Seahawks won’t be among the teams pursuing Moss. — Seattle Times

Seahawks Mike Williams not a dancer

Mike Williams didn’t have a choreographed routine to punctuate his first touchdown as a Seahawk. No makeshift game of charades, either, after his 2-yard catch in the second quarter. “I just wanted to celebrate with my team,” he said. “I didn’t have a dance or anything like that, I just wanted to celebrate with my team.” After being on his own the past two seasons when he wasn’t in the NFL, Williams isn’t just fitting in with the Seahawks, he’s standing out. Williams caught 11 passes Sunday for 87 yards and scored the Seahawks’ only touchdown. Seattle didn’t have a single receiver catch 10 or more passes in any game the past two seasons. Williams has done it each of the past two games. — Seattle Times

Seahawks change travel schedule to end road blues

When the Seattle Seahawks’ team bus departed the team hotel to head to Soldier Field at 8:30 Sunday morning, the players’ body clock registered a slumbering 6:30 a.m. The two-hour time difference from the West Coast has been identified as a major reason Seattle has struggled on the road, especially for noon starts in the Central Time zone. That’s one reason Seahawks coach Pete Carroll opted to have his team fly into Chicago on Friday, instead of Saturday. — Chicago Tribune

Seahawks dropped 17 spots in NFL popularity contest

These are some of the results of The Harris Poll of 2,620 adults surveyed online about the NFL between September 14 and 20, 2010 by Harris Interactive. Certain teams have moved up or down more than others this year. While the Saints’ jump up 19 spots is the biggest move, other movement includes the following:

  • The Seattle Seahawks dropped 17 places on the list from a tie for number 14 last year to number 31 (out of 32) this year;
  • The Tennessee Titans dropped 12 places from number 9 to a tie for number 21;
  • The Baltimore Ravens moved up seven places, from number 26 to number 19; and
  • Two teams moved up 6 places each – the St. Louis Rams, from number 30 to number 24, and the Houston Texans, from number 23 to a tie at number 17.
  • For the second year in a row, the Jacksonville Jaguars (32) are at the bottom of the list.
  • One in five Americans who follow professional football (20%) believe the New Orleans Saints will repeat and win the Super Bowl again. One in ten believe it will be the New England Patriots (11%) or Indianapolis Colts (9%), while smaller numbers believe it will be the Green Bay Packers (7%), the Minnesota Vikings (6%) or the Baltimore Ravens (6%). All teams have their die-hard fans and at least a few people believe their team will win the Super Bowl this season.
  • Over half of Americans (53%) say they follow professional football, a slight increase from last year when 51% said so. As might be expected, men are more likely than women to follow football (66% versus 41%). Over half (56%) of both Gen Xers (those 34-45) and Baby Boomers (those 46-64) say they follow football compared to just under half (49%) of both Echo Boomers (those 18-33) and Matures (those 65 and older) who do.

Seahawks Deion Branch headed back to Patriots?

One possibility to keep an eye on is that wide receiver Deion Branch would be traded to New England, the team from whom Seattle acquired him in 2006. It’s premature to say a trade is on the table, but discussions had taken place as of Wednesday night. By Thursday, the possibility of a deal was mentioned both in Seattle and in New England. The Patriots traded Randy Moss to Minnesota earlier this week. Branch remains a local favorite in Boston, and quarterback Tom Brady is especially fond of him. The Seahawks have six receivers on the 53-man roster after adding Brandon Stokley. – Seattle Times

Marshawn Lynch could start for Seahawks?

By all indications from Wednesday’s practice, Marshawn Lynch will be hip-deep in the game plan for a team searching for any sort of spark in its rushing offense. It has been five years since Seattle had a 1,000-yard rusher, and nine regular-season games since a running back scored a rushing touchdown. Lynch, 24, was a first-round pick from California in 2007, the No. 12 overall choice who has a nickname for the punishing style he runs with: beast mode. “It’s just a state of mind that I follow,” Lynch said, “that basically I won’t be denied and I’m just relentless.”  While Lynch wasn’t designated the starter right away, coach Pete Carroll made it clear that this is a back capable of carrying the load for a team. “He plays with great intensity,” Carroll said. “He’s got make-you-miss ability, and he’s also physical and runs tough.” — Seattle Times

Seahawks Marshawn Lynch gets chance to fix running game

Marshawn Lynch, 24, becomes the latest attempt to improve a running game that has steadily eroded since the Super Bowl season. Seattle released Julius Jones after acquiring Lynch, a departure that was not surprising since Jones took a pay cut before the season and was inactive for Sunday’s game despite being healthy. Seattle is one of four teams in the NFL that hasn’t had a player rush for more than 1,000 yards any of the past four seasons. Lynch was in Buffalo on Tuesday morning when the trade was finalized. The Seahawks do not have a game this week, and the Seahawks were hoping to have him at headquarters on Wednesday when the team practices for the final time before taking a long weekend. – Seattle Times

Seahawks Pete Carroll got extra $500k bonus from USC

It was reported in June that Pete Carroll, USC’s erstwhile football coach, took home $4.1-million in compensation in 2008-9. Make that $4.6-million. As it turns out, Southern Cal made additional payments totaling $500,000 to a private corporation called Compete Inc., for “services performed” by Carroll that same year, according to tax records reviewed by The Chronicle. The amount was not included in the $4.1-million figure, which included base salary and other incentives. Compete Inc. is registered in the state of Washington, where Carroll now resides, and lists him as its president. It’s not clear where the $4.6-million puts Caroll among the nation’s biggest earners. In 2006-7, his $4,415,714 in total compensation made him the country’s highest-paid college employee, according to a Chronicle analysis. –The Chronicle of Higher Education

NFL team gives away pizza, pancakes, slurpees, doughnuts and more

No one has done what the Seattle Seahawks and its marketing partners are now doing: Each of them attaching game statistics to free giveaways. When grouped together, it’s an impressive offering of “freemiums” for fans. Let’s take Sunday’s 27-20 victory over the San Diego Chargers for example. Because the team scored a touchdown in the redzone, fans can show their ticket at a local 7-Eleven to redeem a free small slurpee ($1.09) and a 3.5 oz bag of Oberto beef jerky ($4.99). Since the team scored three touchdowns and won (topping for each touchdown and double that for a win) fans get six free toppings when they order a $9 large pizza at Papa John’s. We went to a Papa John’s. A large with six toppings would cost us $18. So that’s a $9 value there. The team scored at least 21 points, so any fan (even the ones not at the game) can redeem a free small stack of buttermilk pancakes from IHOP ($5.50). To encourage redemption, IHOP has a printable coupon on the Seahawks Web site. But wait, there’s more.

Pats Randy Moss reaches Jerry Rice level

•    Baltimore wide receiver Anquan Boldin had eight catches for 142 yards and three touchdowns in the Ravens’ 24-17 victory over the Cleveland Browns.  Boldin now has 606 receptions in 98 games, reaching 600 career receptions in the fewest games in NFL history.

•    New England wide receiver Randy Moss had two touchdown catches in the Patriots’ 38-30 win over the Buffalo Bills.  Moss now has 151 career touchdown receptions and joins Pro Football Hall of Famer Jerry Rice (197) as the only players in NFL history with at least 150 TD catches. Moss now has 14,604 career receiving yards, surpassing Marvin Harrison (14,580) for the fifth-most receiving yards in NFL history.

·        Seattle’s Leon Washington had kickoff-return touchdowns of 101 and 99 yards in the Seahawks’ 27-20 win over the San Diego Chargers.  Washington is the 10th player in NFL history with two kickoff-return touchdowns in a game.

·        New England quarterback Tom Brady has now won 22 consecutive regular-season starts at home, tying Pro Football Hall of Famer John Elway (1996-1998) for the second-most consecutive home wins as a starting quarterback since 1970.  Brett Favre has the longest such streak since 1970 with 25 consecutive home wins with the Green Bay Packers (1995-1998).

•    San Diego tight end Antonio Gates had one touchdown reception in the Chargers’ 27-20 loss to the Seattle Seahawks.  Gates, who has 63 career touchdown catches, passed Shannon Sharpe (62) for the second-most TD receptions in NFL history by a tight end.

·        The Dallas Cowboys, who defeated the Houston Texans 27-13, won their 400th game (including postseason) since the 1970 AFL-NFL merger.  The Cowboys join the Pittsburgh Steelers (406) as the only teams since 1970 with 400 total victories.

·        The Atlanta Falcons defeated the New Orleans Saints 27-24 in overtime, marking the third consecutive week with an overtime game to start the season.  The last time an NFL season had at least one overtime game in each of the first three weeks was 2002.

Seahawks sticking with QB Matt Hasselbeck

When Seahawks coach Pete Carroll met the media Monday afternoon at the team’s headquarters, he had a strong message that could not be misinterpreted: Matt Hasselbeck is his quarterback. And there’s really not any debate on whether it’s time to give backup Charlie Whitehurst a shot at the job. “Matt’s our guy … we’re counting on him,” Carroll said. “We know Matt gives us the best chance to win. He’s doing everything he can; he’s busting his tail and he’s doing a good job. We’re fortunate to have Charlie waiting in the wings, but it’s not his time yet.” — Tacoma News Tribune

Golden Tate relaxed after Seahawks draft

Golden Tate got comfortable and then he got benched. Rookie mistake. It won’t happen again, he promised. “For me it was kind of a lesson learned,” said Tate, who was inactive last week during Seattle’s 31-6 victory against San Francisco. “Don’t ever relax.” Admittedly Tate got a little complacent and believed he had a spot secure in the playing rotation because the Seahawks selected him 60th overall in the second round of the draft in April. – Seattle Times

Golden Tate fails to make Seahawks debut

Rookie WR Golden Tate was one of eight Seattle players inactive on Sunday. It wasn’t the result of any transgression, just a numbers evaluation as WR Ben Obomanu has a larger role in Seattle’s special teams’ coverage. “I’m really hoping that we’re able to do that in the weeks ahead,” Carroll said of Tate. “He’s got a lot of good stuff for us. He’s still growing and learning.” — Seattle Times

Vegas picks Colts to win Super Bowl

Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts are favored by Las Vegas oddsmakers to win the Super Bowl after coming up short in their championship bid last season. The Colts enter the regular season with 13-2 odds of capturing their second National Football League title in five years, according to Las Vegas Sports Consultants, which advises Nevada’s sports books on betting lines. The 34-year-old Manning led the Colts to an NFL-best 14-2 record last season and beat out New Orleans quarterback Drew Brees to win his fourth Most Valuable Player award before losing to the Saints 31-17 in the Super Bowl. The 31-year-old Brees’s Saints are tied with the Dallas Cowboys as the second Super Bowl choice with odds of 8-1. Houshmandzadeh doesn’t feel wanted with Seahawks

Speculation that T.J. Houshmandzadeh could be traded has been percolating around the league for weeks, but finally bubbled to the surface on Thursday. Seattle likely won’t cut Houshmandzadeh because they still would be on the hook for his $7 million salary, already guaranteed for this season. “If I leave here that means I’m not wanted,” he said. “Everybody wants to feel wanted. It’s doesn’t matter, but it’s like, ‘Wow.’ But that’s just how it goes. I’ve never been in a situation like this. I’ve never been a guy that wasn’t wanted. I was always wanted. So we’ll see.”  — Tacoma News Tribune

Seahawks trading T.J. Houshmandzadeh?

The Seattle Seahawks like their emerging wide receivers and have made it know that veteran T.J. Houshmandzadeh, a top free-agent signing by their prior regime in 2009, is available, league sources said Thursday. The market for Houshmandzadeh is very limited, according to the sources, for the same reason the Seahawks are looking to move him — his salary. Houshmandzadeh is guaranteed to earn more than $7 million this season and is coming off an unproductive year. Executives with teams that are in the market for receivers say they have no interest in taking on Houshmandzadeh’s contract. — NFL Network

Seahawks star takes close to $4 mil paycut

The Seattle Seahawks made a move with Leroy Hill that potentially clears the way for the troubled linebacker to stay with the team for the remainder of this season. Or they may have greased the skids for his departure. First reported by ESPN, Hill restructured his contract with the team, taking a significant cut in this year’s base salary from $6 million to $2.125 million, and voiding the remaining four years of his deal. The sixth-year pro will be an unrestricted free agent again at the end of the season, just a year after locking up a six-year, $36 million deal after the team franchised him. Hill, who last year received a $2 million signing bonus and $5 million base salary, will not receive the final four years and $20 million in potential earnings from the original contract. — Tacoma News Tribune

Jags are NFL’s least valuable franchise

While no NFL teams are hurting for money, the Jacksonville Jaguars are the leagues least valuable franchise, according to FORBES.

With No. 2 media market Los Angeles still looking for a team, expect the Jags to be near the top of the list for franchise relocation. Jacksonville has an estimated value of $725 million.

The Jags generated $220 million while seeing the franchise value drop 16%

Interesting nuggets from Forbes list.

Forbes says not all has gone smoothly for Jerry Jones, who is on the hook for $200 million in stadium debt. A tennis event was canceled this year when players pulled out and the team is suing people who have not paid for their luxury suites. Jones also has not found a naming rights partner for the stadium….

The Redskins have lost 55% of their games and made the playoffs only three times since Dan Snyder bought the team in 1999….

The Patriots have sold out every game at Gillette Stadium since it opened in 2002, but the team continues to pour money into it to keep up with the other teams opening new stadiums. The latest example is two massive video boards installed this summer with one measuring 41.5 feet high and 164 feet wide…

The Giants have yet to secure a naming rights sponsor for their new $1.6 billion stadium, but there is good news on several fronts. While the Jets have struggled to sell PSLs, the Giants have sold all non-club PSLs and as of mid-August had only about 1,200 of their club seat inventory remaining. The new stadium has secured four major sponsorship partners who will pay an estimated $8 million annually. …

Vincent Jackson controls fate with Chargers

This is Vincent Jackson’s call. He and agents Neil Schwartz and Jonathan Feinsod can lower their asking price, or else Jackson is virtually guaranteed to remain tied to the Chargers through this season and perhaps, unhappily, beyond. The Seattle Seahawks are the sole team granted permission by the Chargers to speak with Jackson’s agents, but only the extremely naive would think no other team has broached the subject of signing Jackson. Among those suitors could have been the Minnesota Vikings, who league and agent sources said immediately balked at the same $50 million, five-year contract (with $30 million guaranteed) over which Seattle stopped talks with Jackson. The Vikings on Tuesday signed receiver Javon Walker. Whether Chargers General Manager A.J. Smith should open up the bidding for Jackson to all but the other AFC West teams is a valid question. — San Diego Union-Tribune

Lions add 6th former Seahawks

Two days after trading for another team’s disappointing first-round pick, the Seattle Seahawks moved one of their own struggling first-round selections on Wednesday, trading defensive end Lawrence Jackson to the Detroit Lions for a sixth round pick.. He joins former Seahawks wide receiver Nate Burleson, linebacker Julian Peterson, running back Maurice Morris, offensive guard Rob Sims and tight end Will Heller with the Lions. — Tacoma News Tribune

Seahawks Whitehurst to get more playing time

Seahawks coach Pete Carroll again talked about how well reserve quarterback Charlie Whitehurst played Saturday. While Carroll did not say it directly, Whitehurst’s play certainly validates the offseason move by Carroll and general manager John Schneider to secure him, a transaction that was widely criticized around the league. “We’re all real pleased that it looks good,” Carroll said. “And I’m really pleased for Charlie, too. He sat for four years in a spot where he couldn’t get anywhere close to playing time, and it’s great to see him having this opportunity. And he’s seizing the opportunity by working hard. And hopefully he’ll just continue to play real steady football the next, couple games.” So will Whitehurst get playing time with the first unit Saturday against Green Bay? “We’ll see,” Carroll said. “It depends on how we are up front (offensive line) when we get to game time, but Charlie’s going to play in a lot of games.” Tacoma News Tribune

Kurt Warner lands NFL broadcasting job

In an unusually quiet NFL TV offseason with few changes in network on-air lineups, Fox will formally announce two new game analysts Monday: Jim Mora and Kurt Warner.
Mora, fired by the Seattle Seahawks after going 5-11 last season, will call games in a three-man booth with Dick Stockton and Charles Davis. (Like father, like son: Mora’s father, Jim E. Mora, was an NBC NFL analyst in 1997 after resigning from coaching the New Orleans Saints.) Fox Sports vice chairman Ed Goren Sunday suggested Mora’s on-air potential is a wild card: “With Mora, who knows? He’s done a lot on the NFL Network. … Jim wasn’t ready to get back into coaching. The unknown is whether he gets tempted down the road.” Goren likened Mora’s situation with ex-Baltimore Ravens coach Brian Billick joining Fox in 2008. Billick, said Goren, has embraced broadcasting. “But would he go back to coaching? I don’t think even he knows.” Warner, who retired from the Arizona Cardinals after throwing for 32,344 yards over 12 NFL seasons, will call at least three games working with either Chris Myers or Chris Rose and, logically, start with the New Orleans Saints at Arizona on Oct. 10. (He’ll be replacing Trent Green.) — USA Today

Chargers Vincent Jackson to Seahawks, Redskins?

There are no lack of interested parties in Vincent Jackson, including Seattle and Washington — two big-revenue clubs who have already proven they are anything but afraid to trade high picks for established players and dole out the kind of contract Jackson will demand. Both the Seahawks and Chargers are trying to rebuild ASAP. Both badly need a No. 1 receiver, so stop rebuffing their overtures, start playing them off one another and see how close you can get to obtaining the two second-round picks Miami dealt to Denver for Brandon Marshall in return. If Jackson sits out the season, he already has five years of service time, so it’s likely he’ll be unrestricted in whatever the new CBA looks like. And even if the franchise tag still exists, and you plan on hitting Jackson with that in 2011, that’s a heavy price to pay, going a full season without him just to give him somewhere around $10 million next season. — NFL Network

NFL QB watching Kobe Bryant video on leadership

According to Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll, veteran quarterback Matt Hasselbeck’s struggles last season can be summed up succinctly – he was trying too hard. … Hasselbeck’s stats from 2009 back up Carroll’s claim. He had his worst season as a pro, throwing as many interceptions (17) as touchdowns and finishing with a career-low 75.1 passer rating. Hasselbeck was particularly bad in the last four games of the year – all losses – throwing 10 interceptions to just four touchdowns. Hasselbeck agreed with Carroll’s assessment, and said he’s trying to learn from his errors. One way he is doing that is by watching a Kobe Bryant video that discusses how to handle trying to take on too much as one of the leaders on the team. “I can see myself last year in a lot of the stuff Kobe was talking about,” Hasselbeck said. “And I would have been totally blind to it until it kind of came up the other night in a team meeting. And Gus Bradley had talked about it, and Pete (Carroll) talked about it. And then he showed this Kobe video and it all started to make sense a little bit.” — Tacoma News Tribune

Lawyer Milloy back with Seahawks to makeup for bad year

Lawyer Milloy, 36, said he was driven to come back for his 15th NFL season by one thing – he didn’t want to go through another experience like last year, relegated to a part-time role and playing special teams for the first time in his NFL career. After starting 15 games while leading the Atlanta Falcons to the playoffs in 2008, Milloy finished 2009 with a career-low 27 tackles for Seattle. “Last year, to put it bluntly, I didn’t like it,” Milloy said. “I didn’t like the role that I was put in. It was really mapped out to me clearly, but I really didn’t hear it. And given that, I don’t know if I would have signed on the paper if I knew my role was going to be completely like it was last year, because I wasn’t ready individually. I wasn’t ready to give up a chance to be in a leadership role, to be on the field leading a team.” — Tacoma News Tribune
