Jim Mora has $10 mil reasons to say NO to Broncos, Eagles

Jim Mora is owed $5 million this year and $5 million next from the Seahawks. He’s enjoying life in the Seattle area with his family, and he has a low pressure job with NFL Network. Seahawks coach had age advantage over NFL’s grumpiest coach

The most surprising football stat we’ve read leading up to today’s divisional playoffs has nothing to do with passer ratings or points allowed. It is this: Former Pats coach Pete Carroll, the pumped-up puppy dog of the NFL, is actually a half-year older than grumpy-pants Bill Belichick. Pete will be 60 in September. — Boston Herald

Seattle, New Orleans mayor’s wager seafood, music

Under a wager made Thursday between New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu and Seattle Mayor Mike McGinn, the winner’s spoils also will include a package of seafood and music from the loser’s home city.  At a Thursday afternoon news conference, Landrieu said he spoke to McGinn about 12:30 p.m. The two discussed the value of sports franchises to a city — and also talked a little trash, he said. “That part of the conversation will go unreported,” Landrieu said. — New Orleans Times-Picayune

Seahawks make NFL gambling history

“The Seahawks are the largest home dog in the past 25 years (our records don’t go past 1985) in the NFL Playoffs, yet that is not stopping our bettors from putting down their dollars on the Saints to cover -11 this Saturday. Even though Seattle is traditionally tough at home and played inspired last week New Orleans remain big favs and a popular bet.” — Richard Gardner, Bodog Sportsbook Manager.

NFC worst continues to stink up NFL

Losses by the 49ers on Thursday and the Rams, Cardinals, and Seahawks on Sunday marked the third time this season that all four NFC West teams lost on the same week. All other divisions together have suffered only two such weeks this season (the AFC West on Week 6, and the AFC North on Week 10). In fact, over the past seven seasons, there have been 14 weeks in which one of the NFL’s divisions went 0-4 and the NFC West has accounted for half of them.  — Elias Sports Bureau

Former Notre Dame star turns into NFL bust

Colts have NFL’s best offensive line

The New York Life Protection Index was created by sports information leader STATS to provide a composite gauge for this undervalued component of the game. While the New York Life Protection Index is calculated using a proprietary formula, the fundamentals are comprised of the length of a team’s pass attempts combined with penalties by offensive linemen, sacks allowed and quarterback hurries and knockdowns. The New York Life Protection Index is updated weekly throughout the regular season. — Stats Inc.

Seahawks bench star running back

Marshawn Lynch has shown glimpses of promise since the Seahawks traded for him just over a month ago. But on Sunday, Seattle’s new running back coughed up fumbles that brought two promising drives to a grinding halt. Seahawks coach Pete Carroll replaced Lynch with Leon Washington for the rest of the game. Along with the fumbles, Lynch also dropped two passes and finished with just 36 yards on seven carries. Lynch was not in the locker room when reporters were allowed in after the game. “I’ve already talked to him, and he just feels horrible about it,” Carroll said. “Both of them were kind of in transition situations where he got vulnerable. Unfortunately those are crushers, they’re crushing plays when you give the football up. And he knows that. And we have to do a better job of emphasizing – in those kind of situations in particular – when you’re spinning around and guys are coming from all angles, stuff can happen and you’ve got to finish the play.” — Olympian

NFLs two worst QBs in NFC West

Cardinals quarterback Derek Anderson ranks next to last in the league in touchdowns per pass attempt, 2.6 percent. Among starters, only Seattle’s Matt Hasselbeck (2.5) is worse. Arizona Republic

NFL QB needs help tying shoes

“OK, so who wants to tie my shoes?” Seahawks quarterback Matt Hasselbeck asked. The question was hilarious. It just wasn’t a joke. At least not entirely. Hasselbeck suffered an injury to his left wrist in Seattle’s win at Arizona on Sunday, and while it didn’t keep him from returning to the game, it did make a couple of other things more problematic. Like using a touch-screen cellphone efficiently. Or tying his cleats before Wednesday’s practice. For the record, J.P. Losman — Seattle’s No. 3 quarterback — is the one who ended up tying Hasselbeck’s shoes before the team took the field for practice. — Seattle Times

NFL QB to play despite broken wrist

Coach Pete Carroll said quarterback Matt Hasselbeck suffered to cracked bones in his left wrist, neither a displaced fracture. He said he doesn’t expect Hasselbeck to miss this week’s game, but it will affect his repetitions in practice. Hasselbeck will play with a splint, protecting the wrist. “Likely that it’s a four to six-week kind of deal for the healing part of it,” Carroll said, “but he’ll be more comfortable with it if we can have good fortune with him not banging it in the next couple of weeks. This first week is the most difficult.” Will the injury worsen while he plays through it? “No,” Carroll said. “They think that he’ll be secure and safe. Things could aggravate, but he should be in pretty good shape.” — Seattle Times

Whitehurst not part of Seahawks future?

Charlie Whitehurst was tapped as the Seahawks quarterback of the future before the season by some media pundits. Now he might be looking for work in 2011.

John Czarnecki of Fox Sports reports that its unlikely Whitehurst has a future in Seattle, unless he takes a pay cut.

The organization is saying that backup QB Charlie Whitehurst still has a future with the team, but that seems unlikely with a $4 million salary next season.

NFL’s least shown team has been seen in just 2.9 states a week

The Dallas Cowboys and Minnesota Vikings have a combined 4-12 record and roughly zero chance to make the postseason. But lucky you, they’ve been on your television nearly every weekend this season.

A look at every NFL team shows the Vikings, on average, have been broadcast in a league-leading 38.3 states each week they play, edging the Cowboys by 0.4. The Indianapolis Colts, New York Giants and Philadelphia Eagles round out the top five, while the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are last at 2.9 states a week, according to The506.com, a website that uses local listings to track where teams are broadcast.

Worst division in major U.S. pro sports

The NFC West is the worst division in major U.S. pro sports, and by a wide margin. The Cardinals, Rams, Seahawks and 49ers have won just 37.5% of their games against non-NFC West teams since the NFL’s current alignment launched in 2002, while getting outscored by an average of 5.4 points a game. All the NFC West teams have been outscored and outplayed by the rest of the league. Even the Seahawks, the lone team to win more than half its games since 2002, did so by beating up on divisional foes. Concentrating so much mediocrity in one division gives whichever NFC West team is least mediocre an edge over teams outside the division that don’t have the benefit of an easy divisional schedule. Seven NFC teams currently have better records than every team in the West, but at least two won’t make the playoffs because the West champ is guaranteed a berth.

Here are the best and worst divisions in the four major sports based on their teams’ regular-season record against teams outside their division since their league adopted its current divisional alignment.

League………………….Best (Win %)……………….Worst (Win %)
NFL………………………… AFC South (.581)……………..NFC West (.375)
MLB…………………………… AL West (.518)…………….AL Central (.478)
NBA………………………….Southwest (.590)…………….Atlantic (.439)
NHL…………………………. Northeast (.531)……………..Southeast (.430)
