John Carney, who ranks third in NFL history with 2,052 points, could soon become an assistant coach. Carney is being considered for a full-time or consulting role on the New Orleans Saints 2011 staff, according to the NEW ORLEANS TIMES-PICAYUNE.

The New Orleans Saints on Wednesday brought in for a visit free-agent defensive tackle Shaun Rogers, a three-time Pro Bowl player released by the Cleveland Browns last week. Rogers, who turns 32 next month, also has visited the Washington Redskins and Kansas City Chiefs. Rogers can sign with any team until March 4, because he was released before the end of the current league year. If he doesn’t sign before that date, he will be in the same boat with the rest of the NFL’s potential free agents, who can’t sign anywhere until a new collective bargaining agreement is reached. — New Orleans Times-Picayune

Other veterans who may need to restructure deals to stay with the Saints this offseason include tailback Reggie Bush (due a salary of $11.8 million), tight end Jeremy Shockey ($4.2 million) and receiver Devery Henderson ($2.25 million). Saints quarterback Drew Brees made it clear Tuesday that he’d like to reach a long-term contract extension with the Saints this offseason, though he didn’t exactly make any demands. “I think every player’s always looking for an extension aren’t they? That goes for you guys too,” Brees said to a group of reporters. “I’ve got one year left (on his current contract). And discussions have been ongoing. So we’ll see how it plays out.” There is little doubt that a deal will get done eventually. The Saints want to keep Brees, and he wants to stay in New Orleans, and both sides would be nuts to break up such a perfect union. — New Orleans Times-Picayune
