Rams could dump longtime safety?

As each playoff weekend comes and goes in the NFL, the Rams and safety Oshiomogho Atogwe come closer to a decision on the veteran safety’s future in St. Louis. The first of two important mileposts is less than three weeks away. The day after the Super Bowl, or Feb. 7, Atogwe can void the final four years of a five-year contract he signed with the Rams last June 25

Cleveland Browns eye Rams offensive coordinator?

On the ninth day since Eric Mangini was fired, several developments supported the national perception that Rams offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur indeed is the front-runner to replace him.

Former Vikings coach could join Rams?

One possible Pat Shurmur replacement for the Rams could be Brad Childress, who is one of Steve Spagnuolo’s best friends in the business. Childress and Spagnuolo spent seven seasons together on Andy Reid’s staff in Philadelphia. But after a tough finish to his 4½-year tenure as head coach in Minnesota, does Childress want to get back in coaching right away? According to reports out of Minnesota, he is still due $6.6 million on his Vikings contract, so Childress could sit out a year or two to re-charge the batteries. With Childress, the Rams would be able to run their existing West Coast scheme.  — St. Louis Post-Dispatch

Rams Danny Amendola is NFL’s hardest worker

  • Cowboys star DeMarcus Ware won the sack title for the second time in four years, and has 60.5 in his last 64 regular-season games. All-time sack champ Bruce Smith’s best total over any four-year span was 55.
  • In Jack Del Rio’s eight seasons with Jacksonville, the Jags have finished second in the AFC South five times and gone 66-65 including playoffs. Considering the state of the fan base and the general lack of star power (11 total Pro Bowl selections), that’s not half bad.
  • Miami’s Dan Carpenter attempted 26 field goals of 40+ yards, most since Mark Moseley tried 28 during the 1977 season. Moseley hit 13 of his 28; Carpenter 15 of 26. Moseley did it with much more Old School flair.
  • St. Louis Ram Danny Amendola quietly had one of the most remarkable seasons in NFL history. Not only did he have 90 combined punt and kick returns, most in the league, but he caught 85 passes. That is an unheard of amount of abuse for one player to take in a single season. But it paid off with the 17th most all-purpose yards in an NFL season (2,364).
  • 24-year-old Arian Foster won the rushing title with 1,616 yards, following 23-year-old Chris Johnson in 2009 and 24-year-old Adrian Peterson in 2008. Only one player over 30 has ever won a rushing title – 31-year-old Curtis Martin in 2004.
  • When the Titans decide to move Vince Young, there should certainly be a nice market for a guy who had an 88.7 passer rating and a 12-6 record in 2009-10. Kerry Collins? He had a 74.9 rating and a 2-11 record.
  • Mike Shanahan’s Broncos were outscored by 78 points during the 2008 season. Here in 2010, his Redskins were outscored by 75 points.
  • Over their final 12 games, the Broncos allowed 400+ yards eight times and 30+ points seven times.

NFC worst continues to stink up NFL

Losses by the 49ers on Thursday and the Rams, Cardinals, and Seahawks on Sunday marked the third time this season that all four NFC West teams lost on the same week. All other divisions together have suffered only two such weeks this season (the AFC West on Week 6, and the AFC North on Week 10). In fact, over the past seven seasons, there have been 14 weeks in which one of the NFL’s divisions went 0-4 and the NFC West has accounted for half of them.  — Elias Sports Bureau

NFL player who killed mother driving drunk retires

During the preseason, defensive end Leonard Little let coach Steve Spagnuolo know that if the Rams needed his services he would rejoin the team. But with James Hall and Chris Long both enjoying good seasons, such a need never existed. So Little split his time between his home in Charlotte, N.C., and Atlanta, where he has some business interests. And now, with the season winding down and the Rams doing just fine defensively without him, Little has decided to retire. He informed the Post-Dispatch of his decision Tuesday in a telephone interview. “I didn’t want to leave there and leave a hole to be filled,” Little said. “But Chris Long started playing well last year, and I felt comfortable walking away from it.” Little made the Pro Bowl in 2003 and over 12 seasons with the Rams registered 87½ sacks, and led the Rams in sacks in six seasons. But his time in St. Louis will always be known, also, for a drunken-driving fatality he was responsible for as a rookie in 1999. — St. Louis Post-Dispatch

Colts have NFL’s best offensive line

The New York Life Protection Index was created by sports information leader STATS to provide a composite gauge for this undervalued component of the game. While the New York Life Protection Index is calculated using a proprietary formula, the fundamentals are comprised of the length of a team’s pass attempts combined with penalties by offensive linemen, sacks allowed and quarterback hurries and knockdowns. The New York Life Protection Index is updated weekly throughout the regular season. — Stats Inc.

Rams get highest TV rating since 2003

The Rams’ highest television ratings in their decade-and-a-half stay in St. Louis came when Kurt Warner was fueling Super Bowl runs as their quarterback, and with him as the analyst in the TV booth Sunday they generated their best rating in seven years. The Nielsen Co. says that 29.7 percent of homes with a TV in the market tuned in to KTVI (Channel 2) to see the Rams’ 19-6 victory over the Arizona Cardinals, keeping them tied for first place in the NFC West. That’s the best rating for the club since it pulled a 34.5 figure for the 2003 finale, a season in which they finished 12-4 in Warner’s last year with the team. It also was the last time they closed above .500. — St. Louis Post-Dispatch

NFL star sleeps in altitude tent

Because he sleeps in an altitude tent, running back Steven Jackson feels like he’s prepared for the thin air at Invesco Field when the St. Louis Rams play the Denver Broncos this Sunday. “I’ve actually been using it since training camp,” Jackson said of the tent, which simulates high altitude by maintaining a lower oxygen concentration. “It’s to help, one, get accustomed to what we are going to face this weekend in Denver, having thin air. Two, it helps the body recoup a little faster with the blood cells, muscles that tear in the game, just the abuse your body goes through. It helps the healing process speed up a little. I’ve enjoyed it. I’ve used it all season.” — Belleville News-Democrat

NFL teams scoring average up 7 ppg this season

Compared to last year, the offensive improvement has been significant. With six games still to go this season, the Rams already have scored more touchdowns (18 to 17) and scored more points (177 to 175) than they did in the entire 2009 season. The Rams averaged 10.9 points a game in ’09; they are averaging 17.7 points a game so far this season. That’s a touchdown per game improvement, which is impressive. But in the big picture, 17.7 points is still about a touchdown a game short of where you want to be in the NFL. As it is, the Rams’ 177 points this season ranks 28th in the league, ahead of only Minnesota (172), Miami (172), San Francisco (160) and Carolina (117) in scoring offense. — St. Louis Post-Dispatch

NFL’s least shown team has been seen in just 2.9 states a week

The Dallas Cowboys and Minnesota Vikings have a combined 4-12 record and roughly zero chance to make the postseason. But lucky you, they’ve been on your television nearly every weekend this season.

A look at every NFL team shows the Vikings, on average, have been broadcast in a league-leading 38.3 states each week they play, edging the Cowboys by 0.4. The Indianapolis Colts, New York Giants and Philadelphia Eagles round out the top five, while the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are last at 2.9 states a week, according to The506.com, a website that uses local listings to track where teams are broadcast.

Worst division in major U.S. pro sports

The NFC West is the worst division in major U.S. pro sports, and by a wide margin. The Cardinals, Rams, Seahawks and 49ers have won just 37.5% of their games against non-NFC West teams since the NFL’s current alignment launched in 2002, while getting outscored by an average of 5.4 points a game. All the NFC West teams have been outscored and outplayed by the rest of the league. Even the Seahawks, the lone team to win more than half its games since 2002, did so by beating up on divisional foes. Concentrating so much mediocrity in one division gives whichever NFC West team is least mediocre an edge over teams outside the division that don’t have the benefit of an easy divisional schedule. Seven NFC teams currently have better records than every team in the West, but at least two won’t make the playoffs because the West champ is guaranteed a berth.

Here are the best and worst divisions in the four major sports based on their teams’ regular-season record against teams outside their division since their league adopted its current divisional alignment.

League………………….Best (Win %)……………….Worst (Win %)
NFL………………………… AFC South (.581)……………..NFC West (.375)
MLB…………………………… AL West (.518)…………….AL Central (.478)
NBA………………………….Southwest (.590)…………….Atlantic (.439)
NHL…………………………. Northeast (.531)……………..Southeast (.430)

NFL has most balance since 1981

For the first time since 1981, no NFL team has fewer than two losses midway thought the season. Las Vegas Sports Consultants provides wagering lines to Las Vegas sports books, and the odds to win Super Bowl XLV have more teams than usual at low odds. Here they are: Steelers the 6-to-1 favorite; Giants, Jets, Patriots and Ravens each 7-to-1; Colts, Packers and Saints each 8-to-1; Falcons 9-to-1; Eagles 18-to-1; Vikings 25-to-1; Chiefs 30-to-1; Bears, Chargers and Titans each 35-to-1 (very tempting); Dolphins, Redskins and Texans each 50-to-1; Buccaneers, 49ers, Rams and Seahawks each 60-to-1; Raiders 75-to-1; Cardinals 150-to-1; Bengals, Jaguars and Lions each 250-to-1; Broncos and Browns each 500-to-1; Cowboys 1,000-to-1; Panthers 3,000-to-1; and Bills 5,000-to-1. — Rochester Democrat & Chronicle

NFL could have TWO teams in Los Angeles soon

Philip Anschutz also secured a 30% ownership interest in the Lakers and can buy the team if the Buss family ever has to sell. The same deal probably will be made with the Chargers, with Casey Wasserman becoming the minority owner and the face of the team in L.A. Wasserman has already partnered with Leiweke, has previous experience working with the Goofs who own the Chargers, and has a close relationship with Goodell. L.A. lost two NFL teams 16 years ago, and might begin anew with two teams again, including the Rams. Stan Kroenke owns the Rams, as well as Denver’s basketball and hockey teams. He will have to sell his Denver interests unless he becomes owner of the Broncos. Broncos owner Pat Bowlen is having health issues. Someone has suggested it makes sense for Kroenke to exchange franchises with Bowlen, taking ownership of the Broncos and allowing Bowlen to move the Rams to L.A.LA Times

Bills, Panthers battle for top college QB’s

Two of the apparent four-worst NFL teams — Buffalo, Carolina, Detroit and St. Louis — already have their “franchise quarterbacks” (Matthew Stafford in Detroit and Sam Bradford in St. Louis). That could leave Buffalo (0-7) and Carolina (1-6) to battle it out for the NFL’s worst record in order to “earn” the right to pick the No. 1 available QB. — Rochester Democrat & Chronicle

Rams Sam Bradford wears Missou jersey to pay off bet

It was a sight Mizzou Nation never could have imagined: former Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford, the 2008 Heisman Trophy winner and engineer of two lopsided victories over the Tigers in Big 12 championship games, decked out in Missouri black and gold.
Yet there was Bradford on Wednesday at Rams Park, greeting the media wearing a Mizzou jersey with his former OU number — 14 — and his name stitched on. It came courtesy of ex-MU wide receiver Danario Alexander, the payoff of a bet the two Rams rookies made last week. Because Missouri knocked off Oklahoma 36-27 on Saturday in Columbia, Bradford was obligated to don the MU gear. Had the Sooners prevailed, Alexander would’ve had to wear OU crimson and cream. “I was going to bring a hat and a shirt … he was going to be all OU geared-out,” Bradford said. “I didn’t have a jersey for him, though. This is pretty clever by him.” — St. Louis Post-Dispatch
