Raiders give defensive star franchise tag

This time last year, the Raiders tried and failed to sign defensive lineman Richard Seymour to a three-year extension. They couldn’t agree on the numbers, so Seymour signed a one-year deal for $12.4 million as an exclusive-rights franchise player. Seymour had a Pro Bowl season and his deal is up again – but in a much messier environment. The NFL’s collective bargaining agreement is up March 3, and owners are threatening to lock out players if they don’t sign a new deal that the owners have in mind. Where does that leave Seymour? Tag, he’s it. The NFL told teams they can use the franchise tag again starting today. And sometime in the 14-day window, the Raiders are expected to tag Seymour once again. — SF Chronicle

Raiders coach gives QB Jason Campbell vote of confidence

Coach Hue Jackson asked if Jason Campbell is the Raiders No. 1 quarterback? “No question. I mean, there’s no question he is. The guy won some very important games. The guy played hurt. The guy got to know his teammates, rallied his team, and finished very strong. He helped us win, obviously, every game in our division, there’s no question he is definitely the unquestioned starter on this football team at this point. But I think he knows without any shadow of a doubt, there’s work to do, and we have to do a great job of surrounding him, putting better players around him so he can go out and be the quarterback that we all know he can be.” — Oakland Tribune

Asomugha could return to Oakland?

Don’t rule out a return to Oakland by Nnamdi Asomugha. And there a couple reasons why. First, I know he takes pride in having seen the team through, and he believes there’s a bright future with the Raiders. I believe Asomugha would see meaning in helping get them all the way out of the woods. Second, he has a lot of confidence in Hue Jackson. When I asked what the biggest difference was from last year to this year, Asomugha said that the defense felt a lot better about its offensive counterpart. When I asked why, Asomugha responded that Jackson’s arrival was the biggest reason. Not saying that Asomugha’s staying; just that he might not be as eager to get out as he was two years ago, when the Raiders had to pay him 59 percent more than the next highest paid corner to entice him to stay. — NFL Network

Hue Jackson to call plays as Raiders’ head coach

Raiders head coach Hue Jackson will remain the primary play-caller as head coach. While league sources say Al Saunders is all but signed as the new offensive coordinator, Jackson said he and Davis are still in the process of checking names off a list of candidates. Saunders worked with Raiders quarterback Jason Campbell for two years in Washington and with then quarterbacks-coach Jackson in Baltimore in 2009. — SF Chronicle

Raiders would have fired Tom Cable even with playoff birth

The 81-year-old Al Davis commanded a standing-room only crowd of reporters for nearly two hours, and he made clear that he gave Hue Jackson a lot more credit for Oakland’s 8-8 finish last season than ousted coach Tom Cable. Davis said Cable “did not do a good job” and “had no chance” of returning as head coach even if the Raiders made the playoffs. Later, after a dramatic two-minute pause to pull out some documents, Davis revealed what he said were the legal reasons he couldn’t retain Cable. Davis said he fined Cable $120,000 because of the strain on the organization and potential damages from lawsuits involving allegations that Cable assaulted a former assistant coach and a former girlfriend. — SF Chronicle
