NBA star credits Fab 5 for tattoos, earrings

Tracy McGrady had an odd way of praising the documentary about the Fab Five that aired over the weekend. The former superstar, who’s now a bit play for the Pistons said he was a huge fan of the swagger those Michigan players had. T-Mac was 12 when the Fab Five debuted and he told the DETROIT NEWS he liked the way those Wolverines changed the attitudes and behavior of basketball.

“They changed the whole culture,” McGrady said. “When I was in high school, I couldn’t go in my gym wearing earrings and tattoos and hats. Jalen had that. They had the baggy shorts, the black shoes.”

NBA team credits ESPN analyst for inspiration

Inspiration can come from some interesting places. At least three Detroit Pistons spoke of someone’s words helping inspire them Wednesday night after a 103-94 victory by the Pistons against the Cleveland Cavaliers that extended Cleveland’s losing streak to 26 games. It was not Pistons coach John Kuester. Or Joe Dumars. Or Ben Wallace. Or anyone else in the Pistons organization. It was ESPN analyst Tim Legler, who had predicted a victory for the Cavaliers over the Pistons. “Tim Legler, we heard you,” Tracy McGrady said into a camera while he spoke with ESPN’s Rachel Nichols after the game. “You gave us some bulletin-board material. We used that.” It wasn’t just material for the bulletin board. The Pistons watched a video of Legler making the prediction shortly before the opening tip. Tayshaun Prince and Ben Wallace also brought up Legler’s name during their post-game comments. — Booth Newspapers

Pistons dealing Rodney Stuckey or Ben Gordon?

Pistons expected to deal Prince?

Tayshaun Prince has not had his name mentioned in many trade rumors. He’s been the Pistons’ most consistent player, starting every game and producing similar numbers to those of his career averages. To his credit, Tay’s been a mostly-positive influence on his younger teammates, though he has publicly criticized Kuester on multiple occasions this season. His contract expires this summer, and there’s little doubt he will return this offseason for more of this “buffoonery” as he put it. Detroit could use a center or a point guard, but even a draft pick would entice the Pistons to trade Prince before he leaves in the offseason with nothing in return. — Hoops World

Pistons star could land with Mavs or Bulls?

Rip Hamilton hasn’t played in the last five games, being left out of the rotation by coach John Kuester. His shooting, along with his veteran experience, would be valuable for a team with needs at those spots, particularly Chicago and Dallas, for example. So far, the Pistons are not actively engaged in discussions with either team. Hamilton is owed $21 million guaranteed over the next two seasons, which has made it hard for the Pistons to find a willing taker. His falling production (13.2 points, 41 percent on field goals) makes the task more difficult. — Detroit News

Tayshaun Prince is Pistons most valuable trade piece

The Pistons had a deal in place to ship Rip Hamilton to the Nets as part of a bigger trade that would send Carmelo Anthony to New Jersey. But if that falls apart — and it’s probably Anthony’s call — the Pistons and Rip might be stuck in DNP hell together. They also still have a valuable trade piece in Tayshaun Prince

Sale of Pistons may come next week

Sources close to the sale said this week Tom Gores, the billionaire financier from Beverly Hills, Calif., who grew up in Flint and attended Michigan State, remains the leading bidder for the Pistons and for Palace Sports & Entertainment. Moreover, he is now presumed to be the bidder who will emerge as the owner. His position is so pre-eminent that Gores could close a deal as soon as next week, according to one source familiar with the process. Others say while that may overstate how quickly a deal can be done, the Pistons nonetheless would like to have an agreement in place to present to the NBA board of governors Feb. 18-21 in Los Angeles. While attending Detroit’s game in Los Angeles on Tuesday, Gores declined comment. — Detroit News
