Sports star worth $410 million, spotted buying wine at Costco

Golf legend Greg Norman has become cost-conscious since he agreed to pay his first ex-wife $100 million-plus in their pre-Chris Evert divorce. A Page2Live spywitness ran into the Great White Shark at the Northlake Boulevard Costco yesterday in Lake Park. Yep, Costco — the warehouse heaven for bargain hunters located just a few miles from Norman’s $20 million-home on Jupiter Island! “Greg was quietly waiting in the checkout line like everyone,” the spy said. “He had a t-shirt on that had that shark logo but no one talked to him.” In his shopping-cart: juice boxes for the kids of his new galpal, Kirsten Kutner; and six bottles of $40-Far Niente Chardonnay. I can only surmise that Costco ran out of the Greg Norman Estates beverage that’s made him more money than golf! – Palm Beach Post

PGA Championship TV ratings drop 33%, online viewership up 689%

CBS’ PGA Championship golf coverage Sunday, despite its controversy and extra-hole playoff, drew an overnight rating down 33% from last year’s comparable coverage.
CBS drew a 5.0 overnight rating, which translates into 5% of households in the 56 urban markets measured for overnights. That’s down from 7.5 last year, when Tiger Woods finished second to Y.E. Yang. The rating drop is surprising given that events that run long, for something like overtime, usually get a ratings boost. CBS’ golf Sunday ran about an hour and a half longer than what had been expected, and drew its highest ratings during that time period. The highest-rated half hour came from 7 to 7:30 p.m. ET, when coverage drew 7.1% of measured households. While CBS’ TV ratings were down from last year’s coverage on both Sunday and Saturday, interest in online tournament video coverage was way up. On Sunday, PGA.com drew 4.8 million live and taped video streams — up 689% from final-round online streams last year. — USA Today

PGA Championship online interest up 155% from last year

Early returns suggest strong interest. PGA.com, managed by Turner Sports, drew 7.1 million streams of live and taped video during the tournament’s first three days, up 155% from last year. That boost came partly from online coverage of players trying to finish their weather-delayed second rounds Saturday morning before TNT’s TV coverage came on-air, sending PGA.com’s video streaming Saturday up 763% from last year. On TV, TNT drew 1.1% of U.S. households Thursday, up 22% from last year. — USA Today

TNT announcer sticks foot in mouth

Jim Huber, TNT’s essayist at the PGA Championship, could not have selected a worse analogy Thursday, when describing the career of Australian Stuart Appleby. “There are moments in a man’s life when greatness either passes him on the left or runs him right over,” Huber began. Yikes. Appleby’s first wife, Renay, was killed when she was run over by a car in London. — NY Post

Tiger Woods gets 17.5% of PGA broadcast time

For those of you watching the PGA Championship just for a glimpse of Tiger Woods, you won’t be disappointed. A breakdown of Mr. Woods’s front nine on Thursday—which lasted 2 hours, 13 minutes and was broadcast on TNT—showed Mr. Woods playing, walking the course or replays of him for 23 minutes, 14 seconds, or about 17.5% of the broadcast. That’s more than the amount of time that was dedicated to commercials (22 minutes, 4 seconds) and miscellaneous footage that included mini features, weather updates and shots of the MetLife blimp (17 minutes, 38 seconds). Mr. Woods’s playing partners, Y.E. Yang and Vijay Singh, combined, only got about one-third of Tiger’s show time. Stuart Appleby, the next-most shown golfer, got 11 minutes, 6 seconds of air time. Bubba Watson and Francesco Molinari, who shared the tournament lead at the end of the day, received a combined 3 minutes, 59 seconds. — Wall Street Journal

Ryder Cup captain wins legal battle to block embarrassing story about his private life

Golf’s Ryder Cup is threatened by scandal after European team captain Colin Montgomerie reportedly won a legal battle to block an embarrassing story about his private life. Scottish star Montgomerie, who’s known as Monty, is said to have won a legal injunction in Britain’s High Court to gag a former girlfriend and ban newspapers from reporting her story or printing related photos. But that hasn’t stopped fervent speculation on the Internet and in golf circles about the nature of the story and pictures. The Arizona Republic’s Bob Young reported that the story and photos relate to “an alleged sex scandal,” and added, “frankly, we doubt anybody really wants to see photos of the full Monty.” In June, Montgomerie was caught cheating on his wife of two years, Gaynor Knowles, with a former neighbor, Joanne Baldwin. Montgomerie issued a statement saying he had put his marriage “under considerable strain,” but that he and his wife were “working through these problems.”  — NY Post

Tiger Woods not favored for first time since 1997

Its amazing what a front page story in the National Enquirer can do to your golf game. Tiger Woods has fallen off the greens, now he’s not even the pick of the wise guys in Las Vegas.

TV Golf ad revenue could go down 20% thanks to Tiger Woods problems

The angst Tiger Woods displayed in the wake of his pratfall last weekend at the Bridgestone Invitational may be nothing compared to the unease sweeping over network execs, advertisers and the handful of sponsors who have stuck with him. While ad buyers locked in months ago and remain in place for this weekend’s PGA Championship at Whistling Straits in Kohler, Wis., his struggles have produced a string of ratings bogeys and put the long-term confidence of marketers and both sides of the advertising fairway into the rough. How bad has it gotten for Woods? The primary lure for viewers could be the “train wreck” factor. The PGA has seen viewership for overall Sunday final rounds at major tournaments tumble 6% season-to-date. That was driven by a much-weaker British Open (down to 2.97 million from 5.55 million) on ESPN, according to Nielsen. With Woods licking his wounds and sitting out the first quarter this year, golf programming on network TV fetched $117 million — down from $125.2 million in the same period of 2009 — according to data from research firm Kantar Media. As for cable’s Golf Channel, SNL Kagan analyst Derek Baine said he expects ad revenue could end up as much as 20% down this year from last year’s $140 million thanks to Woods’ woes.  — The Hollywood Reporter

After Woods played the worst golf of his career, ratings for the final round of the Bridgestone Invitational were down 51 percent over last year, when Woods won the event. But more telling, the ratings were down 34 percent from 2008 — when Woods did not even play in the tournament. — NY Post

Report: Tiger Woods planning to marry one of his mistresses

Tiger Woods is making plans to marry his #1 mistress, party girl Rachel Uchitel, and have a baby with her, sources say, but he’s furious that she’s shooting episodes of the reality TV show Celebrity Rehab!  While Rachel hopes to kick her addictions to the prescription drug Ambien and alcohol on the VH1 series, the disgraced golfer is terrified that Rehab host Dr. Drew Pinsky will torpedo their romance, according to insiders. “When Rachel told him that she was going to do the show, Tiger went ballistic!” disclosed an insider. “Rachel explained that she’d be paid $500,000 and could kick her pill habit at the same time. She knows she is seen as the woman who broke up Tiger’s marriage, and by doing the show she hopes to gain a sympathetic image by the time she marries him. But Tiger was livid that she’d expose her addiction in such a public way.  “He’s embarrassed that the next Mrs. Tiger Woods will be known as a former drug addict, and he’s encouraged her to go into a private program. But he’s also worried that Dr. Drew will influence Rachel to leave him, and paint him as a loser who can’t be counted on in a serious relationship.” — National Enquirer

John Daly helps clothing maker sales go up 40%

John Daly’s trousers are brighter than his golf game at the moment. Daly, who led for parts of the first round of the British Open last week, is a 150-1 longshot at the RBC Canadian Open, which starts today. His two victories in majors came more than 10 years ago, the 1991 PGA Championship and the 1995 British Open, and his last PGA win was in 2004. He’s made $102,385 this year, after two years of less than $70,000 from the PGA tour. Still, he has fans who follow his progress at most events, and that was enough for Loudmouth Golf, a San Mateo, California- based clothing maker that signed the 43-year-old to wear its products in February 2009. His pants were a major discussion at the British Open again, as was his marketing of the trousers. “The amount of attention we received each day was incredible,” Alan Wallace, sales director at Loudmouth, said in an e-mail. “We had a 40 percent increase in sales during the entire tournament.”Bloomberg

ESPN’s British Open round lost almost 3 mil viewers

ESPN earned a preliminary television rating of 2.1 for the final round of the British Open yesterday, the lowest for a final round in the event’s history. ESPN averaged a 1.4 rating, or about 1.86 million U.S. households, through the first three rounds and was set to be the highest rating since 2006. Then South Africa’s Louis Oosthuizen pulled ahead, winning by seven strokes over world No. 3-ranked Lee Westwood. The final round rating of 2.1 represents about 2.97 million U.S. households, Mandel said. Last year’s final round received a 3.8 rating, or about 5.55 million U.S. households, for Tom Watson’s playoff loss to Stewart Cink. — Bloomberg

Greg Norman’s sister trashes his ex-wife with shocking new claims

Cracks started to appear in Greg Norman and Chris Evert’s marriage on their wedding day, according to his big sister. Despite the couple lavishing more than $1.3million on their nuptials in the Bahamas, Janis Norman claims she knew they would split the day they tied the knot. Ms Norman told this week’s New Idea magazine the couple’s 15-month marriage was doomed from the start. She claimed it became apparent tennis ace Evert didn’t like playing second fiddle to golfing star Norman’s fame. ‘She [Evert] became very dominating and controlling and it became very apparent she was treating my brother badly,’ she alleged. ‘We all saw it, including his friends. We all agreed that she did not like the fact that Greg had a higher profile, and that she was now taking a back seat.’ –Daily Mail (U.K.)

Bad golfers targeted by snakes in Sweden

Soaring temperatures have brought the venomous snakes out of hiding, according to a spokesman for the Stockholm health board, and the area around the capital has seen a nearly 50 per cent increase in reports of bites and stings. Poor golfers are among the most targeted group, the spokesman said, with many reporting being bitten by vipers as they tracked down their balls in rough grass or bushes. Anyone bitten by a viper should seek immediate medical attention, Ingrid Sandholm, a Stockholm nurse, told The Local, the English-language Swedish website. It is impossible to say how individuals will react to the snake’s venom, she said. — Daily Telegraph (London)

The tournament will have a total purse of $7.3 million, up $60,000 from last year, with the winner earning nearly $1.3 million. Thanks to the major brand that St. Andrews conveys and a sound management strategy under its head, Peter Dawson, and Commercial Director Angus Farquhar, the Royal & Ancient can afford the bigger purse and look forward to the continued international expansion of the R&A that the Open Championship affords.

PGA Tour not cutting back on schedule, despite loss of sponsors

PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem,  indicated that he doesn’t expect a smaller schedule in the next few years, despite the Tour looking for at least a half-dozen title sponsors. The Tour has either renewed contracts or found new title sponsors for 12 tournaments over the past two years. The immediate priority is finding new partners for Hilton Head and the World Golf Championship at Doral. Good luck in a still-difficult sponsorship market. – Business Week

ESPN adding new graphics to British Open coverage

On its British Open coverage starting Thursday, ESPN will add graphics meant to show exactly where players went wrong in their putting. The idea, on the difficult No. 2 and No. 11 greens at the famed St. Andrews site, will be for onscreen graphics to project ideal lines for upcoming putts — then match those side-by-side with graphic showing the lines of actual putts that follow. ESPN won’t rely on caddies to project how greens should be played. It did laser scans of greens’ undulations, says Anthony Bailey, ESPN vice president for emerging technology, “kind of like road crews do for surveying.” That data, he says, was then put into “a physics model in software” to create onscreen visions of perfect putts from anywhere on the greens. The graphics could be particularly useful this week: Tiger Woods, for the first time in 11 years, will use a new putter in trying a new Nike model. – USA TODAY

We’ve learned attorneys for Woods have now filed legal docs declaring that Woods is not the daddy of James’ son and, therefore, the paternity case should be history. – TMZ
