Tiger Woods made $55M from Dubai deal

We originally thought that Tiger Woods made about $10 million in lending his name to a $1 billion Dubai real estate deal back in 2008. Well, that development has halted because of a real estate crash in Dubai. But we now learn, thanks to an Arabian business publication that Tiger was going to make about $100 million. Because the deal has collapsed for now, he only makes about $55 million. — Triangle Business Journal

Browns player tops list of rising sports stars

Cleveland Browns linebacker, David Bowens, tops the list of Rising Sports Stars to watch in the month of November. The list identifies sports stars with the greatest leap in popularity over the prior 30 days. A meteoric rise may indicate a standout on-the-field performance, off-the-field achievement, or emergence from utility player to celebrity.

  1. Cleveland Browns linebacker, David Bowens, was named top AFC defensive player for Week 7 after returning two interceptions for touchdowns in an upset win at New Orleans.  This is the first time the 12-year veteran has been named a top player of the week, and is only the third linebacker since 1970 with two interception return touchdowns in a single game.
  2. Green Bay Packers linebacker, Desmond Bishop, has been given his chance as a starter ever since linebacker Nick Barnett’s season-ending wrist injury.  In only three games, he’s proven his value with 31 tackles, 3 pass defenses, and 1 interception returned for a touchdown.
  3. PGA Tour’s Jonathan Byrd made history by becoming the first golfer to win a PGA Tour title with a hole-in-one.  The American aced the par-three on the fourth hole of a three-man playoff at the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open.
  4. LA Lakers point guard, Steve Blake, injected some fire into his team beginning in the final minutes of the Lakers’ home opening game against the Houston Rockets.  His performance helped the Lakers in their come-from-behind win 112-110.
  5. San Diego Chargers linebacker, Antwan Applewhite, has had a strong performance ever since being named starting outside linebacker after Shawne Merriman’s calf injury.

Follow Up: PGA star spent $80k on champagne in Vegas

We hear the final tab for golfer Anthony Kim’s champagne-spraying spree at Jet nightclub (Mirage) on Monday came to about $80,000. He went through about 120 bottles of champagne, including a six-liter bad boy of Dom Perignon that goes for $25,000. An eyewitness said “most of it was sprayed.” At one point during the champagne shower, Palms resident DJ Exodus tweeted, “Umbrella to the DJ booth please it’s raining Rosè…!!!” — Las Vegas Review-Journal (Norm Clarke)

PGA Star showers dance floor with $25k bottle of Dom Perignon

Some epic Las Vegas partying appears to be temporarily derailing the comeback plans of rising golf star Anthony Kim. Kim, who has said he wanted to shed his party-boy image, withdrew from the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open on Wednesday after reports surfaced about a weekend of high-stakes gambling and a hard-partying spree. Several golf outlets attributed his departure to a nagging thumb injury. But after Vegas Confidential reported Wednesday that he had been admonished for his “loose cannon” behavior while gambling at the Bellagio, the website Golf.com ran details on Kim’s wild night at Jet nightclub at The Mirage. Golf.com ran a tweet posted on the Twitter site of Palms’ resident DJ Exodus. The tweet, with a time stamp of 1:02 a.m. Tuesday, read: “Anthony Kim is an animal 115 bottles then to top it off a 25k bottle of Dom, which he showered the dance floor with …” Vegas Confidential reported Wednesday on Twitter that Kim was partying with NFL Hall of Famer Jerry Rice at Pure. Their evening included spraying champagne into the crowd. — Las Vegas Review-Journal (NORM CLARKE)

PGA star drops F-bombs at Vegas casino

Pro golfer Anthony Kim could use a lesson or two to brush up his gaming table etiquette. His salty language and screaming was so bad that Kim, 25, was asked to tone it down Monday by Bellagio management. “He is one loose cannon,” said a dealer, who said Kim may have set a personal record for F-bombs while playing high-stakes craps over the weekend. Two years after brilliant Ryder Cup play spurred comparisons to Tiger Woods, Kim is attempting to get his game back on track after thumb surgery in May. Kim and poker superstar Phil Ivey were seated at the same table on Friday, ordering cognac and high-end whiskey. — Las Vegas Review-Journal

U.S. has nearly 11,900 golf courses and country clubs

Wednesday, October 13th.  Much of the news about golf this year has centered on the return to competition of Tiger Woods.  Over the years, his outstanding play as a professional has overshadowed his amateur record.  Woods was the only player to win three consecutive U.S. Amateur championships.  The first amateur golf tournament wound up on this date in 1894 at the Grey Oaks course of the Saint Andrew’s Golf Club in Yonkers, New York.  Later that year, the U.S. Golf Association was established to write the rules of the game, conduct national championships, and establish a national system of handicapping.  Across the U.S., there are nearly 11,900 golf courses and country clubs. — U.S. Census Bureau

Tiger Woods has photo opportunity from hell

Golf idol Tiger Woods touched down in Britain with his US Ryder Cup team-mates yesterday – without a WAG in tow. America’s stars, led by captain Corey Pavin, were accompanied by their wives and girlfriends when their plane landed in Cardiff. But Woods, 34, cut a lonely figure following his £65million divorce from wife Elin after flings with up to 20 women. An onlooker said: “Tiger grinned sheepishly when the rest of the team posed with their partners on the steps of the plane. But he looked awkward standing alone among them – it was the photo opportunity from hell for him.

Sports star makes Guinness World Records 2011 edition

Two celebrities this year making headlines for their high profile personal lives also made the new Guinness World Records 2011 edition out now. Lindsey Lohan, takes the dubious honor as “Most Infamous Female Celebrity” thanks to her run-ins with the law and the unfortunate performances of her latest movies and Tiger Woods, who ruled the tabloids for his extramarital affairs, didn’t see an impact on his earnings yet as he assumes his place as the “Most Powerful Sports Star”.  The golf phenom raked in an impressive $103 million and topped the 2010 BusinessWeek Sports Power 100 list. — Guinness World Records

PGA’s best pull against Tiger Woods

When Tiger Wood is standing over a putt, his fellow pro  are behind him — shouting “Miss!” A poll by Golf Magazine of PGA Tour golfers found that the serial swinger is the Number 1 golfer whom top pros would like to see miss a three-foot putt with a major title on the line. Some 14 percent would like Woods to fail. Fellow American Kevin Na was next in line at 9 percent with Spaniard Sergio Garcia third at 8 percent. Thirty one percent of the players voted for no one to suffer that indignity, with one pro stating emphatically: “Nobody! That’s just bad karma.” — NY Post

Tiger Woods to pay ex-wife $54 mil by 2016

Golfer Tiger Woods‘ secret divorce settlement may be so expensive that he had to mortgage his home to pay for it! Official records that just popped up in Martin County hint that Woods will have to pay ex-wife Elin Nordegren $54 million by January 2016 — or risk losing the house he spent five years building. How do I know? The philandering golf-club swinger took out a $54 million-mortgage last Wednesday, two days after his quickie divorce was finalized in Panama City Aug. 23. Woods, the mortgage shows, used the Jupiter Island property, Sand Turtle, to secure the loan — which means that Nordegren could end up with that Motel 6-style crib if he doesn’t pay up. — Palm Beach Post

Tiger Woods stops during move to pet pretty brunette’s puppy

Where’s a caddy when Tiger Woods needs one? The randy golfer could have used a little assistance moving into his new digs on Hudson St. A source tells us Woods kept a super-low profile while carting boxes and golf clubs himself into the building from a double-parked BMW up the street around 8 p.m. Sunday. Tiger did take a break from his boxes – to stop and pet our pretty brunette source’s pup, which she was walking on the sidewalk. Of course. — NY Daily News

Sports magazine lost 28% of advertising last year

Between the pinch of the ad recession and flameout of its most famous player, golf has some rebuilding to do. The same can be said for the reigning monthlies devoted to the sport, Golf Magazine and Golf Digest, which each shed 28 percent of their ad pages last year.  But Time Inc.’s Golf Magazine, while it’s still been trailing Condé Nast’s Digest in terms of overall pages, is turning a corner this year. The recovery comes thanks partly to the magazine’s first “No. 1” themed issue in October. The issue, which Time Inc. hopes will become a new franchise rivaling its Time 100, was up 15 percent in ad pages, bringing the year-to-date page count up 2 percent. Catering to golfer’s love of lists and stats, the No. 1 issue will include a Golfer of the Year award, top equipment and advice, and interviews with celebrity golfers like Bill Murray and Larry David.  Don’t look for coverage of Tiger Woods, though; the issue is deliberately sidestepping that topic for more “positive” fare. “The real story for golf is people who play the game,” said Dick Raskopf, publisher of the Sports Illustrated Golf Group. — Media Week

Tiger Woods expected to avoid clubbing in New York

Tiger Woods is scheduled to play a practice round today at the Ridgewood Country Club in Paramus, NJ, where he will be competing in The Barclays tournament this week.
Manhattan nightclub sources predicted that Tiger will stay on the west side of the Hudson instead of heading into town. “Not a chance in hell Tiger will be out clubbing in New York,” one source said. “I can’t imagine he’d show his face anywhere. “Every club promoter would want him in their club,” the source added. “But he’ll be staying in his hotel room.” — NY Post
