Seahawks make NFL gambling history

“The Seahawks are the largest home dog in the past 25 years (our records don’t go past 1985) in the NFL Playoffs, yet that is not stopping our bettors from putting down their dollars on the Saints to cover -11 this Saturday. Even though Seattle is traditionally tough at home and played inspired last week New Orleans remain big favs and a popular bet.” — Richard Gardner, Bodog Sportsbook Manager.

Harvard students study odds to winning game of H-O-R-S-E

If you’re sick of always losing in the basketball game H-O-R-S-E, you might want to spend less time practicing those behind-the-back three-pointers and more quality time with your calculator. That’s because if you do the math, you’ll find it’s sometimes better to shoot three-pointers instead of layups, or better to try 20-footers instead of free-throws. And if you want to live on the edge, you’ve actually got a 1-in-4 chance to win some games by shooting all half-court shots. The Count built a model with Ben Blatt of the Harvard Sports Analysis Collective—an organization of Harvard students and faculty—that determined the best strategy to win games. The analysis isn’t perfect because it has to assume a few things, starting with both players being equally skilled. It also guesses how good each player is—we assumed there’s a 90% chance to make a layup; 65% to make a free throw; 55% to make a 10-footer; 45% to make a 20-footer; 30% to make a three-pointer; and 6.7% to make it from half-court. The model only works if you assume that each player continually shoots from the same spot—not counting when they’d have to match their opponent’s shot—because otherwise there’d be infinite potential conclusions. The results show that if you go first and your initial shot is always a 10-foot jumper while your opponent’s initial shot is always a free throw, you’ll win 57.7% of the time. If you shoot all three-pointers and your opponent tries all layups, you’ll actually win 92.2% of games. If you want to be wild and shoot all from half court, you’ll win just 1.5% of the time if your opponent is shooting 20-footers. But if your opponent is lazy and shooting all layups, you can chuck it from half-court and win 28.2% of games. — Wall Street Journal

Vegas handicapper high on Clippers

Teams on the decline in the Western Conference could be Memphis (38½ wins) and New Orleans (41½), Kruger said, while Kevin Durant and Oklahoma City (50½) are on the rise. “It’s hard to believe, but I like the Clippers this year,” handicapper Jim Kruger said. That’s true, it’s always tough to be too optimistic about the Clippers, but if Baron Davis and Blake Griffin stay healthy, the Clippers could top their win total of 36½ at the Hilton. — Las Vegas Review-Journal

Heat win total under/over 64 1/2

At Las Vegas sports books, Miami is a consensus 8-5 favorite to win the championship in June. The Lakers, my bet to win a third straight title, are at 3-1 odds. Regular-season win totals are posted at most books, and you will find numbers that differ slightly, but both the Las Vegas Hilton and M Resort are at 64½ on the Heat. “The only side I would play would be under 64½,” said handicapper Jim Kruger of Vegassportsauthority.com. “Every team will be gunning for the Heat. There are still question marks at point guard and at center. Health is always an issue, especially when there is little upside potential above your number. If it turns out the three superstars can blend well together and also not get injured, they could definitely go over the number. “But I feel there are better season-win wagers out there than the Heat.” — Las Vegas Review-Journal
