Helmet-cam returning to NFL

Fox’s Pro Bowl Sunday might produce an audition tape for an adventurous old TV camera to use for a comeback: the helmet-cam. That tiny camera years ago gave viewers a first-person take on, say, having your head slammed into the turf. Though not yet formally announced, Fox Sports president Eric Shanks says, “We have guys who’ve agreed to wear HD-cam helmets.” The exhibition game also allows Fox to mike at least 10 players and coaches — with some audio live — and let studio analyst Terry Bradshaw serve as a game analyst. And if Fox’s helmet-cams Sunday produce compelling footage of heads being stomped by cleats at the bottom of pileups, might the NFL next season allow them in its real games? “If it were up to all the NFL’s TV partners, we’d like to see that,” says Shanks. “Maybe this gets that rolling. We don’t hold out much hope.” — USA Today

President Obama drops retired sports cliche

President Barack Obama – who wasn’t thrilled that LeBron James and Dwyane Wade turned down the Chicago Bulls this summer – told ABC’s Barbara Walters that when it comes to the Heat, it would be prudent for fans to be patient. “It takes some time for the team to come together,” Obama said. “There’s no ‘I’ in team. So no matter how good a player is, no matter how good a group of players are, if they haven’t played together before they are not going to be as good as a team that has played together a long time.” The Heat dropped to 8-7 with a 104-95 loss in Orlando on Wednesday night. — Washington Post

As a contributor to SportsCliche.com, here are some of the other sports cliches that have attained “Hall-of-Fame” status:

  • He always gives 110 percent.
  • We’re taking it one game at a time.
  • They have to stay focused.
  • Defense wins championships.
  • The field is a frozen tundra.
  • The prevent defense prevents you from winning.
  • Records are made to be broken.

MLB official cookies: 12 for $36

Open up, Major League Baseball now has an official cookie. Mrs. Fields Famous Brands has joined the league’s licensing roster as part of the company’s first ever sports partnership. 12 individually wrapped Mrs. Fields cookies with team-specific logos on them will retail for $35.99. The company will also sell smaller cookies, called nibblers, in 48- and 96-count tins with an MLB logo on it for $29.99 and $39.99 respectively. Teams which didn’t make the playoffs but have a huge following — the Boston Red Sox, Chicago Cubs, and St. Louis Cardinals — can also get logoed cookies and tins. The rest of the teams will be available by Opening Day. According to Major League Baseball, Debbie Fields, the company’s founder, was actually a ball girl for the Oakland A’s in the early 1970s. MLB manager has tattoos

Don Mattingly rolls up his uniform sleeve, revealing a tattoo of a cross wrapped in blood-dripping thorns. On his right biceps is another with the words, “No turning back.” From a necklace beneath his jersey, three crosses dangle. To some Dodgers fans, the 49-year-old Mattingly might seem like the managerial equivalent of a trust fund baby, a once iconic player who rode into Los Angeles on Joe Torre’s coattails and inherited the manager’s job at the end of last season. But as he sits for an interview in the small and simple manager’s office before a recent Arizona Fall League game, it’s clear that the ink and the jewelry are symbols of a rise far more complicated than that. — LA Times

Mike Tyson’s Punch-out returning to your smart phone

Boxing icon Mike Tyson is set to make his return to the video game world with a new title for iPhone and iPad. Children of the ’80s (and maybe the early ’90s) probably have a recollection of the Nintendo video game Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out, in which you worked your way up the boxing ranks to fight Mike Tyson, who was heavyweight champion of the world at the time. Rock Software has created a similar experience for iPhone that will hit the app store next month. Users will fight as a character named “Little Sammy,” going through 10 boxers and then getting the opportunity to take on Tyson. The game will sell for $0.99, but Rock Software plans to also let users buy other athletes that they can use in the game. – USA Today

Former NBA star says new basketball sneaker is 99.9% effective against ankle sprains

Ex-Knick superstar John Starks has unveiled a new basketball sneaker he says he wishes he had during his heyday playing against Michael Jordan and Reggie Miller. The shoe is billed as the first kind of sneaker to prevent ankle injuries, Starks told the Daily News recently. “It’s 99.9% effective against ankle sprains,” Starks said. The shoe is tightly secured to the foot with a strap, and the side features a protruding bumper designed to keep players from rolling their ankles. “Once I put the shoe on, and strapped it in, immediately you feel secure in the shoe, and you feel like this is the shoe that’s going to protect your foot,” said Starks, who now works in the New York Knicks front office. “I had many ankle injuries, some that put me out a day, some that put me out a week or two,” said the 6-foot-2 former shooting guard. “I wish this shoe was out on the market at the time that I was playing.” — NY Daily News

Heat star buys $12.3 mil home near Matt Damon, Jennifer Lopez

New Miami Heat forward Chris Bosh already has spent $12.3 million of his $110 million-contract with the NBA team so far. That’s what the former Toronto Raptors star, 26, just plunked down for a contemporary mansion on North Bay Road in Miami Beach, according to the Miami Herald. The 12,000-square-foot house, with seven bedrooms and eight baths, was on the market for $14.9 million, according to MLS records. It features a waterfall in the frontyard, an elevator, a large dock and a gym, among other goodies. The Heat’s top newcomers are settled down now that the season looms. Last month, former Cleveland Cavaliers dunk artist LeBron James signed a contract to buy a Coconut Grove pad for an estimated $7.65 million. If you like to be surrounded by celebs, however, Bosh’s purchase is a good one. North Bay Road has long been a center of celebrity life in Miami Beach. Over the years, residents that include, or have included, the Bee Gees‘ Barry and Robin Gibb, singers Ricky Martin and Jennifer Lopez, Silence of the Lambs writer Thomas Harris and big screen star Matt Damon. — Palm Beach Post

Fans hand book to watching blacked out NFL games online

Nowadays, a blacked-out game may be a few clicks away on your laptop, or even smart phone. The Chargers fans in the YouTube video used atdhe.net, a no-frills website that offers dozens of live TV and sports events. The site provides no information about the origin of the telecasts, or the location of its operational headquarters. One Internet search indicated atdhe.net is based in Sweden. There are others, such as justin.tv, channelsurfing.net and my2p2.eu. Some are more reliable than others, depending on bandwidth and demand for a particular game. Some disappear from cyberspace, only for others to magically appear — making policing them akin to the whack-a-mole carnival game. — San Diego Union-Tribune

Hooker wants David Beckham to drop pants in court

The lying hooker who claimed she had a threesome with David Beckham challenged him yesterday to “drop his pants in court” to prove his innocence. Irma Nici insisted she knew intimate “distinguishing characteristics”. Becks sources branded her a desperate, raving liar, and he has lodged a $16million writ. Sources close to the soccer legend hit out after the 26-year-old Bosnian hooker challenged him to drop his pants in court to prove his innocence. Nici – who was yet again unable to provide any evidence to support her allegations – claimed she had seen “distinguishing characteristics” which would support her story. But Team Beckham lawyers vowed to step up their bid to sue her and the US magazine which published the vile slur for $16million damages. – London Sun

Kim Kardashian fears she will be accused of sleeping around

Kim Kardashian limits the number of dates she goes on over fears she will be accused of sleeping around. The socialite admits she turns down many romantic engagements and keep her outings with potential boyfriends secret as she worries her reputation will be smeared if she is pictured out and about with more than one guy. She tells Heat magazine, “I’m trying to be single, but for me that doesn’t mean dating around. I don’t multi-date. What if I wanted to go on five dates? There’d be photos of me with five different men and I’d be a sl*t and a w***e. So I don’t like to date.”Daily Star

No Arms, No Legs, No Problem for English Channel Swimmer

Frenchman Philippe Croizon, who lost both arms and legs in an electrical accident in 1994, successfully swam across the English Channel yesterday in just under 14 hours, using a snorkel affixed to his face as well as some specially designed prosthetic flippers. Croizon, who trained more than 30 hours a week for two years for this attempt, had been hoping to make the swim in roughly 24 hours. Instead, he made the 21-mile crossing from Folkstone, U.K., to Wissant, France, in just over half a day. Back in 1994, Croizon made his living as a French metal worker when he climbed the roof of his house one day and made contact with a nearby power line. His life-threatening injuries required the amputation of all four of his limbs, although that hasn’t kept Croizon from living his life. — Wired.com

Sickle cell testing of athletes stirs discrimination fears

U.S. colleges and universities for the first time are requiring top student athletes to submit to testing for the gene for sickle cell anemia, a mandate aimed at preventing sudden deaths of promising young players but stirring deep fears about reviving dangerous old prejudices. The screening hopes to identify athletes at high risk for life-threatening complications from intense physical exertion. That way, those with the gene could be monitored more closely and their training could be modified by, for example, allowing more time for rest and drinking more water. But the prerequisite is evoking some of the most notorious episodes in the nation’s history.

68 more arrests on college football game days, than normal Saturdays

Public arrest records from a university town with a successful NCAA Division I football program were examined for 30 days: 10 holidays, 10 college football “home game” days, and 10 control days. In total, 944 arrests were associated with the 30 study days. Results indicated football game days were associated with the highest number of arrests. Specifically, on average there were 70.3 arrests on each football game day, compared to 12.3 arrests on non-game “control Saturdays,” and 11.8 arrests on holidays. Offenses committed on game days generally occurred closer to the football stadium than crimes committed on holidays or control days. Though efforts have been made to combat excessive drinking on holidays, more effort is needed to address the significant binge drinking among students and other spectators that is associated with high-profile collegiate sporting events. — University of Florida, Department of Psychiatry
