Source: Nuggets leak Lakers rumor to get more from Knicks for Melo

The report said the Lakers had only preliminary talks with the Nuggets, claiming to have dangled Andrew Bynum — which would easily trump the Knicks’ Wilson Chandler package. Nuggets coach George Karl always believed his good friend Mark Warkentien belonged in the NBA. Karl was among those who took it hard last summer when the Nuggets didn’t renew Warkentien’s contract as vice president of basketball operations. But Warkentien has bounced back. He will resurface with the New York Knicks as a consultant — and at the most curious of times, given the heavy trade climate floating around the Nuggets and Knicks. Warkentien wheels and deals. He spearheaded the move that brought veteran guard Chauncey Billups to the Nuggets in 2008, and as a result was named the NBA executive of the year when Denver made it to the Western Conference finals. With Warkentien in place, will there be a Knicks deal for Carmelo Anthony? If there’s a trade proposal both teams can agree on, Warkentien’s presence will go a long way toward helping keep the conversations going. That was a real problem between the Nuggets and Knicks in the weeks that the Nets and Nuggets were also trying to work out a trade involving Melo. Carmelo Anthony is going to . . . Los Angeles. For the All-Star Game. The Nuggets forward, who is expected to be traded by the Feb. 24 deadline, will participate in the Feb. 20 All-Star Game, the NBA announced Thursday. Melo finished second in the voting for Western Conference forwards (1,299,849), following Oklahoma City’s Kevin Durant. The question remains which conference Melo will represent if he’s traded prior to the game. According to the NBA, because Anthony was named a starter, he is guaranteed a spot. Nuggets now like Knicks offer for Carmelo

While Nuggets officials continue to weigh their options, a person familiar with the team’s strategy told CBSSports.com Wednesday that there are indications Denver could be warming to the idea of trading Melo to the Knicks. One component of such a trade, the source said, would be Anthony Randolph, with Denver officials apparently coming around in their opinion about the 21-year-old big man.  Earlier in the process, Nuggets executives were not high on Randolph, viewing him as mistake-prone and too much of a project. But that was when the Nets had 2010 No. 3 pick Derrick Favors on the table as the centerpiece of a package that far exceeded what the Knicks could offer. There remains great hesitation to give up too much in any offer to the Nuggets, but, of course, the Knicks are only speculating about what they might have to relinquish at this point. Chauncey Billups wants to not only finish his career with Denver, but also transition into the Nuggets’ front office upon retirement. But his contract, his rapport with Carmelo Anthony and his ability to still play the game at a high level has Billups in a situation in which he will likely be involved in the blockbuster trade. A source said Billups would report and play for New Jersey if traded. But at season’s end, his team can buy him out for around $3 million, making Billups a free agent.
