Like a proud mother, Danica Patrick gave birth to the newest sports cliche. “That took some ovaries to do.” The Des Moines Register reports Danica, speaking to reporters on Friday, at the Iowa Speedway regarding her level of concern with the track’s infamous bumps in Turns 1 and 2, said she has been working on it and has improved.

“That took some ovaries to do because I wasn’t really excited to do it — but I did it,” Patrick said. “I can’t say the other one,” said Patrick, hinting at the version a male driver might employ. “That just sounds like I’m swearing. I figured I’d use the accurate one.”

The car was a manufacturer’s vehicle and wasn’t registered in anyone’s name, Stone said. The officer said he asked Busch why he was driving at such a high rate of speed. “He said ‘this is just a toy,’” Stone said. He said Busch indicated the car, a two-seat sport coupe produced by Lexus as a concept car and a racing prototype, was on loan to him from the manufacturer. He said Busch was cooperative. “He wasn’t arrogant or anything,” he said.

A summer school director is claiming the stock car industry got her whacked by lying to her about a video it shot in a school locker room. COURTHOUSE NEWS reports the teacher, with 37 years on the job, gave permission to NASCAR Media to use the school for a video with hip-hop singer Betty Grind, under the conditions that it did not contain “any adult content or explicit material.” Of course when they made the video it had lots of explicit, adult material that was not in the script given to the teacher. When her bosses found out about it on YouTube, she was fired after almost 40 years. So Kathryn Taylor has sued Providence Day School, of Charlotte and NASCAR.

Fox will make cars glow. As of Thursday the network hadn’t settled on a color scheme. Said Fox Sports President Eric Shanks: “We don’t want to make it a radar map — with green, yellow, red — showing a storm moving in, but it may end up that way.” The idea is that packs of cars can spew so much heat that cars trailing them have to back off or their engines will overheat. The glows, from two thermal cameras normally used to spot overheating in industrial settings, are meant to illustrate the temperatures around engines. But the glowing shots, which will be used only on replays, could also tell viewers how hot the cockpits are getting for drivers and can look pretty cool around the tires as cars speed out of pit stops. Just think of the possibilities, suggests Shanks. “I’ve seen what this camera looks like if a car flips over and flames come out,” he said. “That could be a spectacular image.” –USA Today

Santa Claus didn’t do the NASCAR Hall of Fame any favors over the holidays. Despite ramping up promotions and ad campaigns in December, attendance fell to its lowest monthly total since the $200 million stock-car museum opened in May 2010. The hall of fame attracted 14,636 people in December, according to figures released this week by the Charlotte Regional Visitors Authority. The visitors authority operates the hall of fame on behalf of the city. In addition to small crowds, the December operating deficit of $327,000 also eclipsed previous monthly losses — and nearly doubled earlier projections. The hall of fame’s budget anticipated a loss of $118,000 for December. The results follow a decision last month to cut $4.8 million from the current budget, part of an overhaul prompted by lagging attendance and revenue. Revised projections call for a loss of $1.3 million for the fiscal year ending June 30. Halfway through the fiscal year — July 1, 2010 through Dec. 31, 2010 — the hall of fame has lost $837,000. –Charlotte Business Journal

ESPN is reporting Thursday that Jordan Brand has officially signed NASCAR driver Denny Hamlin to an apparel deal. The sources said that Hamlin will wear the famous “jumpman” logo on his gloves, uniform belt, back and shoulder areas. Hamlin will not wear the Jordan Brand shoes in the car, but will wear them off the track. It’s unusual for major sneaker brands to get involved with NASCAR but with Michael Jordan’s passion for motor sports combined with his sponsorship for a motorcycle racing team since 2004, it makes sense. — WSOC TV

That number is dwarfed by the 31% who picked professional American football and even the 17% who prefer baseball (a 6% drop since 1985). In fact, men’s soccer barely makes it higher than the 3% who weren’t sure which sport was their favorite. — Peace FM Online

The approval means the speedway will be eligible for as much as $20.5 million in performance-based rebates during a 10-year period, based on an investment of $82 million, according to a news release Monday. The incentive allows the applicant to recover as much as 25 percent of development costs through the recovery of sales tax generated at the racetrack. “This NASCAR event at the Kentucky Speedway is estimated to have an annual $150 million economic impact on Kentucky,” Gov. A company called International Speedway attempted to build a track on Staten Island earlier this decade, until opposition from nearby residents killed the project by 2007. The Medallion mogul’s idea is to build the track to co-exist with horse racing at Aqueduct in Queens or at Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn.

She’s into the vintage era and is going with an ostrich and peacock feathers theme for their ceremony. He designed her vintage wedding ring. They were in town for NASCAR’s Champions Week, and she’s embracing all things Vegas, including a certain iconic burger franchise. “Made it to vegas!,” she tweeted earlier this week. “First stop…. Arquette was seen leaving the club with a brunette at 6 a.m. and was spotted with the same woman poolside the next day. On Sunday night, he went to club Arkadia, also at the hotel, for Jimmie Johnson’s NASCAR Championship victory party and bought a table of girls three bottles of champagne. “He was buying drinks for everyone,” said our spy.
