For Lions’ Suh, no brace, no sling, no restrictions

As Ndamukong Suh bounced around radio row at the Super Bowl the last two days shilling products for Gatorade and Subway, he did so without the slightest hint he’s less than a month removed from surgery on his right shoulder. No brace, no sling, no restrictions. “It’s done,” Suh said during a brief break between appearances. “I don’t have to wear it anymore.” Suh, the Detroit Lions dominant defensive tackle, underwent surgery Jan. 10 to correct an injury that first flared up during his senior season at Nebraska. He said the shoulder didn’t affect him at all during a standout rookie season in which he had 10 sacks and was voted all-pro. The surgery, as much as anything, was done to keep him playing at a high level long into the future. “To be honest with you, it’s something I needed to get done to help my teammates out and be able to play in upcoming years,” Suh said. — Detroit Free Press

300lb NFL star rookie shows off dance moves

The children were two of more than a dozen patients Lions rookie tackle Ndamukong Suh gave a surprise visit to and entertained with a dance-off to “Bad,” one of the King of Pop’s hit songs. Suh, all 6-foot-4 and 304 pounds of him, had no problem literally jumping right into the new Michael Jackson “The Experience” video game for the Nintendo Wii. When it comes to kids and a good cause, Suh claims he hast no problem getting out of his comfort zone. “Giving back and having an opportunity to join in somebody else’s life that might be going through something tough,” Suh said of the visit’s purpose. “It brings joy to me because I know I would have definitely enjoyed it if somebody would have came and saw me when I was in the hospital.” As for the actual dance-off, Suh admitted he had stiff competition. A productive NFL rookie season of 55 tackles, 8 sacks, and in 14 games didn’t appear to matter to a crowd that watched him groove. “The video game allows players to dance to a variety of songs from Jackson’s catalogue including as “Beat It” and “Thriller,” and gives tips on how to master his dance routines. –Detroit News

Colts have NFL’s best offensive line

The New York Life Protection Index was created by sports information leader STATS to provide a composite gauge for this undervalued component of the game. While the New York Life Protection Index is calculated using a proprietary formula, the fundamentals are comprised of the length of a team’s pass attempts combined with penalties by offensive linemen, sacks allowed and quarterback hurries and knockdowns. Lions star could bolt Detroit after 2012 season?

Calvin Johnson was asked about that possibility and whether he’s happy with the Lions during his weekly radio appearance Thursday on WXYT-FM (97.1). “Put it like this, if we turn this thing into a winner, I’m happy,” Johnson said. “I’ve won 11 games since I’ve been here in four years. Losing definitely sucks, and you definitely don’t want to be around losing. You can’t get used to that. I can’t get used to it because I haven’t come from that. I’ve been used to winning. And if this thing can’t get turned around, man, like I said — I’m just going to leave it at I can’t get used to it. I want to win.” Johnson will make nearly $23 million in base salary over the next two years as the Lions’ highest-paid player. He was asked on his radio show if he’d look elsewhere after the 2012 season if he’s convinced the Lions can’t win.  “When that comes, I can answer that one,” he said. — Detroit Free Press
