Ex-NFL quarterback charged in $1M theft

A former Ohio State quarterback whose NFL career was derailed by a gambling addiction has been charged with stealing more than $1 million from an Ohio woman. Art Schlichter was charged with theft Monday in Franklin County Municipal Court in Columbus. Schlichter is accused of stealing more than $1 million from a woman in Dublin by deceiving her about the reason he took the money. The 50-year-old Schlichter, who played for Ohio State from 1978 to 1981, spent 10 years in prison for gambling-related crimes. He played for the Baltimore and Indianapolis Colts and Buffalo Bills, and the Detroit and Cincinnati Arena League teams. The NFL has suspended him for life.  – Chicago Tribune

Europe soccer star Michael Ricketts has admitted attacking his girlfriend outside a restaurant after celebrating his birthday. The 6ft 3ins former England striker struck Nuala McEwan before head-butting her twice. Ms McEwan’s eye was left partially closed following the attack and she was treated in hospital. The couple, who have been in a relationship for eight years, had spent the evening of Saturday, December 4, at Amba Restaurant in the Hale area of Birmingham. But things turned nasty after the pair rowed when Ricketts accused Ms McEwan of being disloyal and of seeing somebody else as they celebrated his 32nd birthday. Ricketts went ‘very quiet’ after the altercation and the couple got the bill and asked restaurant staff to call a taxi before going outside to wait, prosecutor Eileen Rogers told the court. Freelance photographer Robert Martinez has filed a police report in Tampa that alleges 60-year-old Charles Jeter attacked him last week while he was trying to snap pictures outside the Yankee’s Davis Islands home. Martinez attorney John McGuire tells us the elder Jeter first pushed his client on the chest, then caught him in something “like a horse-collar tackle.” While no charges have been filed, McGuire explains that his client wanted to make sure the incident was on record — in part to prevent what he sees as an increasing “bully mentality” toward photogs just doing their job. — NY Daily News

Felon Michael Vick gets first endorsement since release from prison

Michael Vick’s comeback is gathering steam off the field as well. The Philadelphia Eagles quarterback has landed what may be his first commercial endorsement since being release from prison on dogfighting charges. Vick is appearing in a TV commercial for Woodbury Nissan near the City of Brotherly Love. The humorous TV spot shows the kinder, gentler Vick running around the showroom in his Eagles jersey showing sales associates how to save money, signing off on deals and appearing in mock press conferences. Tom McMenamin, executive manager of the dealership, says it is “100%” Vick’s first endorsement since he was released from prison. — USA Today
