SEC school eyeing $150-180 million ‘face lift’ for football stadium

University of Kentucky Athletics Director Mitch Barnhart has singled out “facilities” as the No. 1 item on his to-do list for 2011. Barnhart, in a one-on-one interview this week, said his primary focus will be renovations to Commonwealth Stadium. The renovations would include the addition of club seating and more luxury suites; new scoreboards; the construction of a multi-purpose recruiting room; upgrades to the concession-stand areas; and the addition of electronic monitors in the concourse areas and around the perimeter of the stadium. Barnhart said the renovations would cost an estimated $150-180 million. — Lexington Herald-Leader

Earthquake hits during Washington-Kentucky game at Maui Invitational, but not everyone notices

An earthquake that registered 4.7 on the Richter Scale hit Maui in the second half of the Maui Invitational game between Washington and Kentucky on Tuesday night. Not everyone involved in the game realized it even happened. But Washington star guard Isaiah Thomas did. “I felt the floor shaking,” Thomas said, “and the rims were moving.” The earthquake struck at 6:34 p.m. Hawaii time (11:34 p.m. EST) during the second half of Kentucky’s 74-67 win. “There was an earthquake?” Kentucky coach John Calipari asked. “What was it on the Richter Scale?” Calipari’s response was nonchalant when informed what the quake, centered off the southern coast of Maui — about 40 miles southeast of here — registered. “That’s nothing. I thought you were going to tell me it was a 7 and the building shook a little bit,” he said. In fact, the building did shake, as did courtside tables. But amid the hubbub and noise of a major-college game between nationally ranked teams, many people didn’t notice. Jay Bilas, an ESPN analyst, was not among the people who didn’t notice. He noted the confusion of the moment during the game telecast before reports confirmed that an earthquake had struck the area. — Grand Rapids Press

Kentucky’s Steve Brown latest coordinator to hear fans’ ‘mumblings’

At Kentucky, Steve Brown is the man being knocked around town. “Mumblings and rumblings,” the defensive coordinator acknowledged Tuesday. Never mind that under Brown, the UK defense has allowed 356.3 yards per game, the best four-year statistical stretch since 1987-90. It’s who have you stopped for me lately? “It’s a tough job,” said Brown, smiling. “But that’s the job description.” His job might be tougher than most. UK is 12th in the 12-team Southeastern Conference in rush defense. It’s 11th in scoring defense. Its upcoming opponent, South Carolina, has a knock-em-back running back in Marcus Lattimore and the momentum from upsetting No. 1 Alabama. “There’s nothing wrong with people having opinions,” said head coach Joker Phillips, who heard the critics during his five years as offensive coordinator. “But people’s opinions don’t change the way we are going to be as coaches.”  “Words without knowledge,” said Phillips. Here’s some knowledge: Brown knew he had some rebuilding to do this season. The Cats graduated NFL draftees Corey Peters and Trevard Lindley. They lost linebackers Micah Johnson and Sam Maxwell. Then senior cornerback Paul Warford turned up academically ineligible, as did promising tackle Mister Cobble. “We’re playing with a lot of new faces, but you know what, it is what it is,” Brown said. “Our job is to get them to be as good as they can be, prepare them for each game, and see what happens.” Sometimes what happens is good, as when the Cats started 3-0. Sometimes what happens is not so good, as when UK hit SEC play. — Lexington Herald-Leader

Through two games, Kentucky QB Mike Hartline has three TDs and no interceptions and is completing 71.7 percent of his passes. “(I’m) more confident in throwing balls up to these guys wherever they’re at, just to give them a chance,” Hartline said. “Even if they don’t come up with the ball, it’s a good shot.”Courier-Journal

Texas Longhorns kings of college football merchandise

In the annual ranking of nearly 200 institutions affiliated with Collegiate Licensing Co., five SEC schools finished in the top eight for merchandise sales. Texas remained No. 1 for the fifth straight year, followed by Alabama, Florida, LSU, North Carolina, Georgia, Michigan and Kentucky. The Longhorns brought in a whopping $10.15 million in gross royalties in the fiscal year that ended June 30. The rankings do not include some high-profile programs such as Ohio State and Southern Cal, which are not under contract with the Atlanta-based licensing company. — Atlanta Journal-Constitution

LSU’s Les Miles slips in SEC coaches ranking

Here is the 2010 ranking of the SEC’s coaches.

1. NICK SABAN, ALABAMA — Back in the top spot for the first time since his last season at LSU in 2004. He is also No. 1 in the nation. He is the first coach in modern times to win national championships at two schools — LSU in the 2003 season and Alabama last season. He also recruited most of the players who won the 2007 national title at LSU. He has not lost a regular season game since Nov. 24, 2007.

The scary thing is, he’s not leaving, and he has Alabama where he had LSU when he left — with gobs of talent entering, exiting and throughout the program.

2. URBAN MEYER, FLORIDA — Down from the No. 1 position a year ago, but probably the No. 2 college coach in America as well. It’s amazing how much Meyer won the last two years — 26-2 with a 15-1 SEC mark — while unhealthy.

3. HOUSTON NUTT, OLE MISS — Laugh all you want, but Nutt has averaged nine wins a year the past four seasons at second-tier programs Arkansas and Ole Miss. If he was at a program with the resources of an Alabama, LSU or Florida, he would be winning 11 or 12 a year. Nutt has not always fared well when he is highly ranked entering a season like last year.

4. MARK RICHT, GEORGIA — Last season the Bulldogs dropped to 8-5, but he would have to have another subpar season to get on a hot seat. Richt was 22-5 in 2007 and 2008 and has been close to getting into a national championship game or two.

5. BOBBY PETRINO, ARKANSAS — He has not been able to get Arkansas to the top as quickly as he got Louisville there, but he’s coming. Look for a breakout year.

6. LES MILES, LSU — Down one spot. His record is still gaudy — 51-15 (.773) and 27-13 (.675) in the SEC. But the fact is he gradually has turned an elite program — 22-4 (.846) and 13-3 (.812) in the SEC the two years before his arrival — to an average one with a 17-9 (.653) and 8-8 (.500) record the past two seasons. In 2008 and 2009, LSU lost four games by six points or less.

7. STEVE SPURRIER, SOUTH CAROLINA — When Spurrier’s entire career is judged, he will go down as one of the best ever. But lately, he just doesn’t have it.

8. DAN MULLEN, MISSISSIPPI STATE — State came close to going 7-5 in Mullen’s first season after inheriting a 4-8 program. Mullen probably got more out of what he had than most other league coaches last season.

9. GENE CHIZIK, AUBURN — He started fast with a 5-0 record but fizzled to 8-5. His last season at Iowa State was eerily similar. He started out 2-0 and finished 2-10.

10. DEREK DOOLEY, TENNESSEE — Dooley and Chizik must have the same agent. Dooley got a high-profile job, too, after going 4-8 at Louisiana Tech!

11. ROBBIE CALDWELL, VANDERBILT — Caldwell edged Kentucky’s Joker Phillips with the best SEC Media Days performance in history. No one has ever channeled his inner Hee Haw better.

12. JOKER PHILLIPS, KENTUCKY — The best first name for a head coach since Bum Phillips. — Monroe News Star

Kentucky’s John Calipari visits NFL practice

So far during the first two weeks of camp, three NCAA Division I basketball coaches have stopped by to watch Steelers practice. Last week, it was Duquesne’s Ron Everhart. On Monday, it was Robert Morris’ Andy Toole. On Thursday, it was Kentucky’s John Calipari, a Moon Township native. Calipari is a close friend of Steelers QB coach Randy Fichtner. They met several years ago when Calipari was coaching at Memphis (2000-2009). Fichtner was the offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach at Memphis from 2001-2006. — Beaver Times
