Bengals Terrell Owens to join Rice, Moss in NFL record book

Ryan Fitzpatrick, who was named the Bills starting quarterback in Week 3, has 13 touchdowns passes in six games.  Fitzpatrick is on pace (30) to become the second Buffalo quarterback to register 30+ touchdown passes in a season, joining Pro Football Hall of Famer Jim Kelly (33 in 1991)

Ravens DT Haloti Ngata leads the club with five sacks and is on target (10) to become the first NFL defensive tackle since Warren Sapp (10) in 2006 to reach 10 sacks in a season.

Bengals WR Terrell Owens has reached 1,000 receiving yards nine times in his career and is pace (770; 1,540) to join Pro Football Hall of Fame WR Jerry Rice (14) and Titans WR Randy Moss (10) as the only players to have at least 10 seasons with 1,000 receiving yards in NFL history.

RB Peyton Hillis, who was acquired via trade by the Browns in March, leads the team with 644 rushing yards and seven rushing touchdowns. Hillis is on pace (1,288 rush yards, 14 rush TDs) to join Jim Brown, Leroy Kelly and Mike Pruitt as the only running backs in franchise history to have 1,000 rushing yards and 10 rushing touchdowns in a season.

Texans WR Andre Johnson has 14 career games of 10 receptions and 100 receiving yards and needs two such games this season to surpass Pro Football Hall of Famer Jerry Rice (15) and Marvin Harrison (14) for the most in NFL history.

Four-time MVP QB Peyton Manning of the Colts has 2,478 passing yards and is on pace (4,956) to join Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterbacks Dan Fouts (1980-81) and Warren Moon (1990-91) as the only players in NFL history to have consecutive seasons with 4,500 passing yards.

Jaguars QB David Garrard has 13 touchdown passes in seven games and is on track (27) to surpass Mark Brunell (20 in 1998 and 2000) for the most touchdown passes in a season in franchise history

Acquired via trade by the Dolphins in April, WR Brandon Marshall has been a welcome addition in Miami.  Marshall, who has reached 100 receptions in each of the past three seasons, is on target (52; 104) to join Marvin Harrison as the only players to have 100 receptions in four consecutive seasons in NFL history.

NFL fan gets 18 signatures tattooed on HER arms

Kim Nored, who is 29 and a college student, has 18 signatures tattooed on her arms — but only above her elbows. She wants her arms to be office-appropriate. The signatures are mostly from players, but she also has coach Jack Del Rio, Jaxson de Ville and Jaguars great Tony Boselli. “That is a die-hard fan if there ever was one, to get tattoos of autographs, of random players for that matter,” Jaguars kicker Josh Scobee said. Scobee didn’t think Nored was serious when she approached him last year. She returned to training camp a few days later to show him the tattoo. She did the same with Del Rio. “I signed a guy’s forehead once — I don’t think he made it a tattoo,” Del Rio said. “There are certain areas I won’t sign. I like to keep it G-rated.” Sometimes her friend Chris Tilyou, who goes by Critter is busy, such as when rookie defensive tackle Tyson Alualu signed the back of her left arm at a post-draft event. Nored didn’t wash the back of her arm for two days. Critter did her very first tattoo last summer. She wanted a small Jaguar head. Critter disagreed. “Come big or don’t come at all,” he said. Eventually, the Jaguar head turned into a Jaguar head and paw. Then they added the words “Never Fairweather” around the head. — Florida Times-Union

NFL coach admits team fumbled ’08 draft strategy

The Jaguars drafted Derrick Harvey in the first round and Quentin Groves in the second in 2008 to help fix the pass-rush, giving up a pick in nearly every round to trade up for the two of them. Jack Del Rio said in 2008 that the Jaguars roster was so strong, there wouldn’t be much room for draft picks.  “We probably had underrated the number of players we had that were getting up in their years, that weren’t going to continue playing for a long time,” Del Rio said Wednesday. “I would say that’s absolutely something we have to admit looking back that to package that many picks and try and move, thinking you’re that close, that’s really not the sound way to do things.” The Jaguars are now 30th in the league in scoring defense and 30th in total defense.  Del Rio said he was encouraged with the direction of the unit after the team “purged” its roster last season. He said a lot of the young players are showing  improvement.  “The direction that Gene is taking us is different,” Del Rio said. “I applaud what Gene’s been willing to do. He’s done some things that maybe haven’t been real popular, but he’s done the right thing.” — Florida Times-Union

Jags Garrard very good and very bad

In four wins this season, Jaguars QB David Garrard’s passer rating is 139.5. He has 12 touchdown passes and one interception and a completion percentage of 78.6 in those games On the flip side, in the three losses in which Garrard has played, his quarterback rating is 34.6. He has one touchdown and six interceptions. — Florida Times-Union

Trent Edwards to be Jaguars backup

Coach Jack Del Rio said the Jaguars have to sort out the backup situation, but it looks like Trent Edwards will be the backup because Todd Bouman was still limited in practice because of a finger injury. The thumb Edwards injured two weeks ago appears to have healed. — Florida Times-Union

DE Aaron Kampman doesn’t regret signing with Jaguars

DT Aaron Kampman said both he and his family are enjoying Jacksonville and have no regrets about signing. “We love it,” he said with a smile. “My wife says, “I’ll take the kids to the beach. You go to work.’ ” Kampman wants to be part of a turnaround with the Jaguars. — Florida Times-Union

NFL team denies Magic Johnson has talked of buying team

NFL spokesman blames coach for calling TV timeouts

Even though Tennessee coach Jeff Fisher said after the game that referee Mike Carey told him at the two-minute warning that they were two timeouts short, a league spokesman said in an e-mail, “The calling of timeouts is strictly a decision for the coach and the team. It is not standard for the referee to notify head coaches about TV’s situation regarding its commercial breaks. That’s all we have to say on that subject.” Del Rio declined to say if Carey told him about the timeout situation, but said he called two of them because he wanted to give his defense a chance to stop the Titans. — Florida Times-Union

Former Redskins QB headed to Jags?

Facing the possibility that neither David Garrard nor Trent Edwards might be able to practice today, the Jaguars re-signed veteran quarterback Todd Bouman on Tuesday and are looking at the possibility of signing Patrick Ramsey. To make room for Bouman, the Jaguars cut veteran safety Gerald Alexander for the second time this year. If they sign Ramsey, they will have to cut another player. If Garrard and Edwards are sidelined, that would leave Bouman as the only healthy quarterback on the roster to work in today’s practice as the Jaguars begin preparations for Sunday’s game against the Kansas City Chiefs. If Ramsey is signed, he would need time to learn the Jaguars’ playbook. — Florida Times-Union

Starting NFL QB’s wife gives coaches advice

Mary Garrard isn’t shy about giving advice to the Jaguars’ coaches in a joking manner. Offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter and quarterback coach Mike Shula were at a recent birthday party for the Jaguars quarterback’s son, Justin, when David Garrard suggested his wife give them her views. “I said, ‘Here’s a great time to tell the coaches what you’ve been trying to tell me.’ She was laughing with them and joking with them, and they know Mary. They know how she is and the competitor she is. It was more joking than anything,” David Garrard said. “She knows I like to move around and run around a little bit more. She was just saying we’ve got to see that some more and see you running around a little bit. Not that she was coaching up our coaches or anything.” Garrard said his wife has been watching him play since he was a sophomore in college at East Carolina. “My wife is very into the game. She understands the game,” Garrard said. — Florida Times-Union

Jaguars owner can write check to avoid TV blackout

The Jaguars have 2,165 non-premium tickets to sell by 8:30 p.m. today to avoid a television blackout, but the game is expected to air on local TV for the fourth consecutive home game (and six, counting the preseason). Even if the Jaguars fall short of selling all the seats, owner Wayne Weaver can write a check to the league for the 34 percent visitors’ share of the unsold tickets. – Florida Times-Union

NFL head coach rips ESPN’s Chris Mortensen

Coach Jack Del Rio had some strong words for a comment on ESPN by Chris Mortensen that Jaguars wide receiver Mike Sims-Walker was on the trading block. “That’s garbage,” Del Rio said. “False. Not credible. It’s disappointing to see stuff like that just go out be thrown out there haphazardly without anybody checking any sources. So I’m disappointed that something like that would be out there for us to discuss.” Mortensen did not actually say Sims-Walker was on the trading block. He was asked by co-worker Adam Schefter about receivers who might be on the trading block during ESPN’s Sunday NFL Countdown show. Mortensen speculated that Sims-Walker is a player who might be “on the bubble.” Reached by phone, Mortensen said Del Rio texted him about the situation and that he will call Del Rio to discuss what happened. — Florida Times-Union

Jaguars Maurice Jones-Drew has wrist injury

Jaguars running back Maurice Jones-Drew had X-rays on his right wrist after Sunday’s game in Buffalo and the results showed no major injury, Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio said. “He’s pretty quiet usually out there. He’s taken some shots and delivered some shots and usually you don’t hear a lot,” Del Rio said. “He was making a little noise, which made me be concerned, but he’s fine. Checked out. They X-rayed it and everything. He’s fine. No issue.” Jones-Drew injured his wrist early in the fourth quarter against the Bills at the end of a 17-yard run. “He comes out and it looks like the season’s over with his hand, the way he was screaming on the ground there,” Jaguars quarterback David Garrard said. “But he comes back in the game and is tough as all get out.” — Florida Times-Union

Suspect in attack on Jaguars’ Kassim Osgood, ex-cheerleader upset at breakup

The ex-boyfriend of a former Roar cheerleader charged in an attack on her and Jaguars wide receiver Kassim Osgood couldn’t handle their breakup and stalked her while threatening to kill himself, according to an April 20 protective order request obtained by the Times-Union. While the injunction for protection didn’t prevent the Sept. 27 assault that ended with an exchange of gunfire and 20-year-old Julian Bartletto’s arrest, experts say it is better to seek court and police protection than not.  — Florida Times-Union

Jags fan in serious condition after stadium fall

A Jacksonville man was in serious condition today after plummeting two floors at EverBank Field Sunday following the Jaguars last-second victory over the Indianapolis Colts. Brent Sawdy, 34, was either high-fiving another fan or trying to scramble from a stairway to an escalator when he fell from the second level of the stadium, according to police. Sawdy was taken to Shands Jacksonville following the 7 p.m. accident. When police tried to determine if he had been pushed, Sawdy told them no, according to a police report. — Florida Times-Union

Trent Edwards could send David Garrard to Jags bench

Trent Edwards will be the emergency quarterback behind David Garrard and Todd Bouman against Indianapolis on Sunday, but once Edwards is ready, the Jaguars would likely go to him if Garrard can’t break out of his current slump. Garrard didn’t seem fazed by Edwards’ arrival. “They’re going to do what they’re going to do. I can’t control that,” Garrard said. “I’ve said that since the first day that I came in here until today. All that I can control is I have an opportunity this weekend, so I’m going to go out with all my ability, my passing and my faith and perform at the level I know I can.” — Florida Times-Union

Jaguars Trent Edwards could land starting job?

It’s likely Trent Edwards will become the Jaguars’ backup quarterback behind David Garrard, but Jack Del Rio said for now Todd Bouman is still the backup. Edwards could even challenge Garrard’s position, as two consecutive poor outings have left Garrard’s status a little bit wobbly. Asked Monday how long he could keep going to Garrard if he continued struggling, Del Rio replied: “As long as he’s our best option.” – Florida Times-Union

Jags Jack Del Rio on hot seat: NFL week-to-week business

The pressure on Jack Del Rio has increased because, owner Wayne Weaver said at the end of last season that he didn’t expect to be home in January for the playoffs. And Del Rio put a lot of emphasis in the offseason on getting off to a fast start. So the 1-2 start, including losses of 38-13 to San Diego and 28-3 to Philadelphia, has sparked speculation nationally that Del Rio’s job in jeopardy. If the Jaguars lose to Indianapolis on Sunday, they’ll be 1-3. That would be their worst start since they started 0-4 and fell to 1-7 in Del Rio’s first season in 2003. Del Rio’s teams are 58-57 in the regular season and 59-59 overall. Weaver has called their record in recent years “average.” Del Rio said, “There’s a flavor of the week in the NFL. There are going to be people, the talking heads are going to discuss who is the Super Bowl winner right now, who’s the team whose coach and quarterback are going to get canned. It’s a week-to-week business. It’s all great for the ratings, for the popularity of the game. For this football team, we can’t get caught up in the hype when it is good or the beat down when it’s bad. You’ve got to stay focused on what we’re doing. We’ve got to continue to prepare. Next up is the Colts.” Del Rio said the Jaguars face a “a very urgent” time. “It’s important we get this ship righted right away,” he said. — Florida Times-Union

Jags Maurice Jones-Drew not worried about personal stats

Jaguars RB Maurice Jones-Drew has yet to score a touchdown. It is the first time since 2007 Jones-Drew has gone three games in a season without a touchdown. “It’s more than just me,” Jones-Drew said. I want to win. I could care less about the personal stats. I know I joke around about fantasy and all that, and that’s cool, but my job as an offensive running back is to get the offense going so we can get in the end zone and score and win games.” — Florida Times-Union

Snoop Dogg looking to buy pro sports franchise?

Calvin Broadus aka Snoop Dogg wants to join Jerry Jones and Mark Cuban in the world of pro sports ownership.

Would Snoop have any chance of being approved as an NFL, MLB or NBA owner? The rapper sent a message out on his TWITTER account about his desire to purchase a professional sports franchise with Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg.

Snoop Dogg’s Tweet: “Ayo sumbody tell Zuckerberg to holler at me. He n I need go buy a pro sports team tgether.”

Snoop lives in Southern California, the Dodgers could soon be for sale, also some think the Clippers will be sold in the next few years. As for the NFL, the Chargers, Jaguars, Bills and Vikings have all been mentioned as possibilities to relocate to America’s No. 2 Media Market.

QB Todd Bouman happy to be back in Jacksonville

Todd Bouman was just another fan watching the NFL games on Sunday Ticket at his home in Pipestone, Minn., last Sunday “I watched my buddies I played with before,” Bouman said. Bouman is now a quarterback again instead of a spectator after signing with the Jaguars on Tuesday to replace Luke McCown, who was placed on the injured reserve list with a torn anterior cruciate ligament. Though Bouman hadn’t been on an NFL roster since Sept. 6, 2009, when the Jaguars cut him after trading for McCown, Bouman kept working out in hopes that he would get a call. He had been helping his brother, the offensive coordinator of the high school team in Pipestone, and working with the team’s players (the team is 1-2). Bouman said that, at age 38, it is easier to jump in at a moment’s notice. “As you get older, you feel way more comfortable with it. Earlier in your career, if something like that happens, you’re a little more nervous,” he said. — Florida Times-Union

QB Todd Bouman headed to Jags?

The Jaguars’ season now rests on David Garrard’s right arm. Any chance that backup quarterback Luke McCown could create a quarterback controversy if Garrard continued to struggle ended Monday when coach Jack Del Rio revealed that McCown suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament at the end of the 38-13 loss to San Diego on Sunday. McCown will now undergo reconstructive surgery on his right knee for a torn ACL for the second time since 2006 and will be placed on the injured reserve list today. The Jaguars will apparently bring in veteran Todd Bouman, who’s had three previous stints with the team, to replace McCown. Because Bouman, 38, wasn’t even in a training camp this year, he would likely get to play only if Garrard were injured. And Garrard has been a durable player, starting every game the past two seasons. – Florida Times-Union

Source: Jaguars adding Ernest Wilford

The Jaguars are signing tight end Ernest Wilford on Thursday, a source said. Wilford was cut when the Jaguars made their final cuts Sept. 5.  Because Wilford is a vested veteran and wasn’t on the roster for the season opener, his salary will not be guaranteed for 2010. The Jaguars will have to cut somebody or move somebody to injured reserve in order to make room for Wilford on the roster.  The Jaguars drafted Wilford as a receiver out of Virginia Tech in the fourth round in 2004 draft. He signed with Miami as an unrestricted free agent in 2008 and was waived a year later.  Wilford returned to Jacksonville last summer as a free agent.  — Florida Times-Union

NFL coach wants officials to use common sense

Sunday afternoon, after scoring his first touchdown in six years, Kassim Osgood threw his arms into the air and fell to his knees. However, falling to one’s knees in celebration isn’t allowed in the NFL, and the Jaguars were hit with a 15-yard penalty for Osgood’s celebration. Asked about it on Monday, Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio understood the rule, but indicated he wished it didn’t exist. “That’s a rule that’s intended to eliminate showboating, and that was just sheer exuberance, joyful celebration,” Del Rio said. “No mocking, no taunting, but he went to the ground. You can’t go to the ground. It’s the rule, it was enforced properly; however, I’d like to see a common-sense application. If they want to ask coach Del Rio what he thinks, I’d like to see a little common sense injected into the officiating, allow our referees to use judgment. “There was no attempt right there to do anything other than be excited about scoring. That’s all it was. He wasn’t showing anybody up. He wasn’t putting himself out there. By the letter of the law, you can’t go to the ground, so it’s a foul.” — Florida Times-Union

Broncos Tim Tebow meets family in Jacksonville

After conducting a brief postgame interview that lasted less than four minutes, Tim Tebow was escorted by security guards to an area near the Broncos bus, where he met about 20 family and friends and chatted for about 30 minutes. The family reunion seemed quiet, possibly because the Tebow family’s home team is now in Denver rather than St. Johns County or Gainesville. Denver Post

Jaguars could relocate even if Tebow was drafted

Ah, Jacksonville. Jaguars management was vilified for not drafting Tebow in April, not that it had a chance past its No. 10 overall pick. The overwhelming sentiment was: What difference does a roster make if forced relocation is a legitimate threat? “Jacksonville has been a great city, I loved growing up there,” Tebow said at his locker Wednesday, “But I’m very excited and very proud to be with the team that I’m with.” — Denver Post
