Cowboys favorites to land Raiders defensive star?

Oakland Raiders CB Nnamdi Asomugha is set to become a free agent this offseason and Jerry Jones would is the favorite to land him. The Dallas Cowboys are the favorites to sign…

Rams Danny Amendola is NFL’s hardest worker

  • Cowboys star DeMarcus Ware won the sack title for the second time in four years, and has 60.5 in his last 64 regular-season games. All-time sack champ Bruce Smith’s best total over any four-year span was 55.
  • In Jack Del Rio’s eight seasons with Jacksonville, the Jags have finished second in the AFC South five times and gone 66-65 including playoffs. Considering the state of the fan base and the general lack of star power (11 total Pro Bowl selections), that’s not half bad.
  • Miami’s Dan Carpenter attempted 26 field goals of 40+ yards, most since Mark Moseley tried 28 during the 1977 season. Moseley hit 13 of his 28; Carpenter 15 of 26. Moseley did it with much more Old School flair.
  • St. Louis Ram Danny Amendola quietly had one of the most remarkable seasons in NFL history. Not only did he have 90 combined punt and kick returns, most in the league, but he caught 85 passes. That is an unheard of amount of abuse for one player to take in a single season. But it paid off with the 17th most all-purpose yards in an NFL season (2,364).
  • 24-year-old Arian Foster won the rushing title with 1,616 yards, following 23-year-old Chris Johnson in 2009 and 24-year-old Adrian Peterson in 2008. Only one player over 30 has ever won a rushing title – 31-year-old Curtis Martin in 2004.
  • When the Titans decide to move Vince Young, there should certainly be a nice market for a guy who had an 88.7 passer rating and a 12-6 record in 2009-10. Kerry Collins? He had a 74.9 rating and a 2-11 record.
  • Mike Shanahan’s Broncos were outscored by 78 points during the 2008 season. Here in 2010, his Redskins were outscored by 75 points.
  • Over their final 12 games, the Broncos allowed 400+ yards eight times and 30+ points seven times.

  • New England Patriots are 59-2 (.967) when scoring 30+ points under Bill Belichick.
  • New York Jets have 11-4 road record (.733) under head coach Rex Ryan.
  • Jets are 12-2 (.857) when QB Mark Sanchez has 80+ rating.
  • When QB Jay Cutler has 100+ rating, his teams (Bears, Broncos) are 20-0.
  • Jaguars QB David Garrard has single-season franchise record w/ 22 TD passes.  At home this season, Garrard has completed 108 of 172 passes (62.8 pct.) for 1,242 yards w/ 12 TDs vs. 6 INTs & 93.2 passer rating.  Ranks 1st in NFL w/ 115.8 4th-quarter rating
  • Titans QB Kerry Collins (39,906) needs 94 passing yards to become 12th QB in NFL history w/ 40,000 career.
  • Chiefs QB Matt Cassel has 10 TDs vs. 1 INT & 99.3 rating at home in ’10
  • Texans RB Arian Foster (1,345) aims to become 2nd undrafted player since 1967 to lead NFL in rushing yards (Priest Holmes – 1,555 w/ KC in ’01).  Leads NFL w/ 13 rush TDs & needs rush TD to surpass Domanick Williams (13 in ’04) for most in season in club history.  Foster (1,895) needs 105 yards to become 1st player in franchise history w/ 2,000 scrimmage yards.
  • Chargers QB Philip Rivers is 10-0 as starter on road in Dec. w/ 19 TDs vs. 5 INTs & 99.3 rating.
  • Falcons QB Matt Ryan is 19-1 (.950) at home as starter.  Aims for 16th consecutive home win.  Has posted 100+ rating 15 times & Falcons are 15-0.

Radio malfunction costs Jaguars on fumbled pitch

The Jaguars were the victim of a radio helmet malfunction at a critical moment Sunday in their 34-24 loss to the Indianapolis Colts. The Jaguars were trailing 14-10 on their first drive in the third quarter when they faced a fourth-and-1 at their 39. Coach Jack Del Rio likes to gamble and the call went to David Garrard to make the quarterback sneak if it was open or pitch to Maurice Jones-Drew if it wasn’t Garrard pitched, Jones-Drew fumbled and even though he recovered, the Colts got possession on the Jaguars 38. “I just took my eye off the ball,” Jones-Drew said. The sneak was open, but Garrard didn’t hear that part of the play and didn’t think to audible. Garrard said, “The headsets were going in and out and weren’t working. I had to switch to a different helmet. I didn’t get that part [about the quarterback sneak]. I wish I would have gotten the call.” — Florida Times-Union

Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio: CB Will Middleton deserves rebate for $5,000 fine

Jaguars cornerback Will Middleton got a little bit of mail from the NFL on Wednesday. The league fined Middleton $5,000 for a hit on Oakland Raiders quarterback Jason Campbell. “Disappointed would be the one word,” Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio said. “It wasn’t a very significant amount. I almost think he ought to get a rebate. When you have a call go against you like that —  sack-fumble defensive touchdown looks pretty good.” — Florida Times-Union

Colts have NFL’s best offensive line

The New York Life Protection Index was created by sports information leader STATS to provide a composite gauge for this undervalued component of the game. While the New York Life Protection Index is calculated using a proprietary formula, the fundamentals are comprised of the length of a team’s pass attempts combined with penalties by offensive linemen, sacks allowed and quarterback hurries and knockdowns. The New York Life Protection Index is updated weekly throughout the regular season. — Stats Inc.

NFL coach begs fans to step up and by tickets

Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio made a push for fans to buy more tickets during his opening statement in his Monday news conference. “Need the fans to step up and be a force for us down the stretch here with big December home games. We need that 12th man,” Del Rio said. “So we’re going to need them to be loud and proud and show up and make it disruptive for the offense that’s coming in here, make it difficult for the Raiders to operate at the line and that can be a factor for us. … We’ve had every game on TV and had good support and hope it continues as we finish up here in December.” The Jaguars still have 6,233 tickets left to sell for their final home game, Dec. 26 against the Washington Redskins. — Florida Times-Union

Jags Garrard to play despite wrist in splint?

Jags QB David Garrard was wearing a splint on his sprained left wrist Monday, but he said he’ll be ready to play Sunday against the Tennessee Titans. “I feel good,” he said. “I’ve got a little soreness, a little swelling, but I feel like everything will be fine this week. Once we get the swelling out, there will be no problems.” Garrard, who was injured when he was sacked on the next-to-the-last-play of a 24-20 loss to the New York Giants last Sunday, said he doesn’t expect to wear a splint in the game. “They might put a little pre-wrap, a little tape, but other than that, I don’t see anything else,” he said. Garrard said both an X-ray and MRI revealed no broken bones in his wrist. “Yeah, everything was negative,” he said. “Everything was good. I actually got to see it myself, so I’m happy about that. Once we get the swelling out of there, it’ll be ready to roll.” — Florida Times-Union

NFL punter makes quiet recovery from cancer diagnosis in offseason

Adam Podlesh talks with scientific pragmatism about the cancerous tumor that grew on his face at the beginning of this year. He glosses over how scary it was to learn he had salivary gland cancer, the worrisome potential of radiation or chemotherapy — neither of which he ultimately needed. In fact, the Jaguars punter dealt with his illness this summer with such quiet poise and strength that even many of his teammates have no idea what he went through from mid-February through March. “When it comes down to it, planning the best course of action, having blind faith and positiveness going through the whole ordeal, having a good outlook on life really put my life in perspective going through that,” Podlesh said. “It helped my family through the whole ordeal. It definitely changed all of us forever.” In March, Podlesh was diagnosed with salivary gland cancer after a biopsy on a growth below and in front of his ear revealed the tumor to be cancerous. Podlesh took time away from football to let his body heal and slowly worked himself back into football shape.  — Florida Times-Union

10.4% of NFL games have been blacked out

One of the reasons the NFL has been pumping out release after release bragging about their glowing television ratings is to take attention away from all of those empty seats in their stadiums. Through the first 10 weeks, 15 of the league’s 144 games, or 10.4 percent, were blacked out because they failed to sell out. Through 144 games last year, there were just 10 blackouts. The year before, only three. Notice a trend? That blackout number figures to swell in the second half of the season as teams fall out of the playoff hunt. The Tampa Bay Bucs have had a league-high five blackouts already. The Oakland Raiders are second with four, followed by the San Diego Chargers (three), Buffalo Bills (two) and Detroits Lions (one). The 2-7 Bengals will join the Blackout Club this week. Their home game against the Bills failed to sell out. The Chargers’ Monday night game against the Broncos also is likely to be blacked out. And the Jacksonville Jaguars, who somehow sold out their first five home games after failing to sell out a single home game last season, have asked for an extension to avoid a blackout of their game against the Browns. — Philadelphia Daily News

Jaguars jersey, gloves and ball used for Hail Mary catch sent to Pro Football Hall of Fame

Mike Thomas is going to become the first Jaguar players ever to be featured in a display at the Pro Football Hall of Fame in the wake of his Hail Mary catch Sunday against the Houston Texans. Officials at the Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio, requested that the Jaguars send his jersey, gloves and the ball for the display, and the items were shipped Tuesday. “That’s a big honor. That’s a big deal,” said Thomas, who was at ESPN headquarters in Bristol, Conn., on Monday to appear on six shows. The only previous things the Hall of Fame wanted from the Jaguars were two balls, one from their first game (a preseason game against Carolina at the Hall of Fame in 1995), and another from the Jaguars’ first game in 2004, which was the team’s 10th anniversary season. — Florida Times-Union

NFL finds parity with no salary cap

Increasing player payroll appears to have limited correlation to team success.  In this year of parity so far, there is little to take away in terms of hard line rules to guide us, but let’s take a look: Of the low-spending teams, some are doing well (Buccaneers, Chiefs, Titans), some middling (Jaguars, Chargers) and some poorly (Bills, Panthers, Broncos).  Many of these teams have used the uncapped year to take advantage of the lack of a floor for spending, using 2010 as a year to bring debt under control and gird for the next system, whenever that may be.  A few of these teams are spending as little as $85 million when the previous Cap floor was $109 million. Of the higher-spending teams, some are doing well (Raiders), some middling (Bears, Vikings, Redskins, Dolphins) and some poorly (Cowboys, 49ers). — Forbes

Jaguars DE Aaron Kampman injures knee

Defensive end Aaron Kampman noted during the bye week how healthy the Jaguars were with only one starter, right tackle Eben Britton, on the injured reserve list/ He pointed out they haven’t had many “super-significant” injuries this year. It turns out Kampman might have suffered a super-significant injury in practice Thursday. He went down with what might be a serious knee injury and was scheduled for an MRI exam Thursday night. The results weren’t known at press time. — Florida Times-Union

Jaguars avoid TV blackout

The Jaguars still had 1,000 non-premium seats to sell when they announced there will be no TV blackout for Sunday’s game against Houston. Macky Weaver, the Jaguars’ senior vice president, sales and marketing, said the team expects to sell the remaining tickets by Sunday. If any are left, owner Wayne Weaver can write a check to the league for 34 percent of the value of the tickets. Macky Weaver said the Jaguars have about 7,000 tickets left to sell for the Cleveland game the following week. He has promotions planned with local companies. — Florida Times-Union

NFL QB released, could return to tractor on his father’s farm

Todd Bouman, who was released for the fifth time by the Jaguars on Tuesday, is free to return to the tractor on his father’s farm in Minnesota. He was on the tractor on Oct. 19 when the Jaguars called him. They had an emergency because their two quarterbacks, David Garrard and Trent Edwards, were injured against Tennessee. Bouman earned his place in Jaguars lore when, with three days of practice, he made his first start in five years in Kansas City and turned in a solid performance. Showing he could still play NFL-caliber football at age 38, he completed 18-of-34 passes for 222 yards and two touchdowns in a 42-20 loss. But with Garrard and Edwards healthy, Bouman was released for the second time this year.  — Florida Times-Union
