Governor asks fans to buy NBA tickets

Flanked by business and community leaders from the New Orleans area, Gov. Bobby Jindal and New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu said Hornets fans will play a key role in the first step toward securing the NBA franchise’s long-term future in New Orleans. “Really, their future is in our hands, ” Jindal said during Monday’s news conference at Gallier Hall. “One of the things we can do in the short term is for our people to show up. We are asking the people in south Louisiana and the region to buy those tickets.” The Hornets can opt out of their lease agreement with the state if an attendance benchmark is not met by Jan. 31, 2011. — New Orleans Times-Picayune

NBA player wants franchise in Kansas City

Earl Watson, a native of Kansas City, Kan., is one of just two active NBA players from the Kansas City area. The other is Indiana’s Brandon Rush, from Kansas City, Mo. With the New Orleans Hornets being bought by the NBA and the possibility they could move, Kansas City has been mentioned as a possibility. Watson believes the city, which lost the Kings to Sacramento in 1985, is deserving of another NBA franchise. “I think Kansas City is a great NBA city,” Watson said before Wednesday’s game against Miami. “It’s a city that loves sports. We have already two major franchises … with the Royals and the Chiefs and (had a third with) the Kings back in the day. Basketball in Kansas, alums from (Kansas University) and (Kansas State), they all kind of centralize in Kansas City. It’s a great city financially for many reasons and also for the new arena they just put up.” — Fanhouse

Chicago could get second NBA franchise?

While sources said David Stern’s desire is for the Hornets to remain in New Orleans, it’s possible a potential buyer in another area of the country could purchase the team and relocate it. Kansas City, Anaheim and Seattle have been mentioned as possible relocation sites, in addition to Chicago, which already has the Bulls, but it is the country’s third-largest media market and could conceivably support two teams. — New Orleans Times-Picayune

NBA franchise could start relocation process?

The New Orleans Times-Picayune reported Tuesday that an attendance clause believed to have lapsed in the team’s arena lease with the state actually still exists . That means the Hornets, currently 25th in the NBA in attendance despite their 12-5 start, would be permitted to start the relocation wheels spinning by breaking their lease unless they average at least 14,213 for the next 13 games. Team president Hugh Weber reaffirmed the team’s commitment to New Orleans in the article, but stopped short of unequivocally stating that the team would not use the clause to break the lease. One reason: It would cost the team $10 million. Another: New ownership would be wise to consider such a move. — CBS Sports

NBA stars brother fell 36 floors to death as child

If anyone was going to understand the tragic circumstances at hand, it was Hornets forward Trevor Ariza. In 1996, his five-year-old brother, Tajh, was playing with his eight-year-old brother, Kenny, on the patio of a Venezuela hotel when the younger sibling fell 36 floors to his death. Trevor was away in Caracas at the time, having attended a game of his basketball-playing stepfather, Kenny McClary, while his brothers stayed back with the babysitter. This was the loss he’ll never be able to forget, one that’s memorialized by his five tattoos in his late brother’s honor and the ultimate living tribute of his son. On Monday night, three-year-old Tajh, who is named after his late uncle, offered levity on the heaviest of evenings, laughing preciously when Chris Paul played the part of basketball magician with a few Harlem Globetrotter-esque tricks before tipoff and assistant coaches later entertained the youngster. — Fanhouse

Hornets making NBA fast start history

The Hornets defeated the Clippers by a score of 101-82 in New Orleans on Tuesday night. New Orleans is off to a 7-0 start this season after finishing last season with a 37-45 record. Only four other teams in NBA history have won each of their first seven games of a season after finishing below .500 the previous season: the St. Louis Hawks in 1967-68, the Detroit Pistons in 1970-71, the Houston Rockets in 1984-85 and the Boston Celtics in 2007-08. — Elias Sports Bureau

Hornets coach likes Joe Alexander

Former Bucks forward Joe Alexander, now with New Orleans, was inactive for the opener. The Bucks declined his third-year contract option last fall and eventually traded him to the Chicago Bulls as part of the John Salmons deal. Alexander then signed with the Hornets in the off-season. “He’s in the gym all the time and may be our best athlete,” Hornets coach Monty Williams said. “You want a guy like him to succeed. “What I’ve talked to him about is keeping his game in a box. Sometimes he gets carried away with trying to create, trying to make plays for other guys. When you’re out there with Chris Paul, you don’t need to make plays. You need to just finish. He (Paul) will serve it up; you’ve just got to eat it.” — Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

Hornets star tells agents he DOESN’T want contract extension

With an opportunity to opt of his contract next summer, New Orleans Hornets starting forward David West has advised his agent that he doesn’t want to enter discussions for an extension until after the season. West, who has spent his entire career with the Hornets after he was drafted as the 18th overall pick in the first round of the 2003 NBA draft, said he wants to take his time and make a smart business decision. “I’m looking to go in and make the best decision in terms of my future,” West said. “I plan on just playing this year and doing all I can to help this team improve and have a successful year.” — New Orleans Times-Picayune

Hornets waive player they traded for last week

Despite acquiring him in a trade last week from the San Antonio Spurs, the New Orleans Hornets waived point guard Curtis Jerrells on Sunday. With his release, the Hornets will not have to send a future second-round pick to the Spurs. Jerrells’ release comes after the Hornets acquired Jerryd Bayless in a trade from the Portland Trail Blazers Saturday night. Bayless will be introduced by the team on Monday.  — New Orleans Times-Picayune

The Blazers tried to include New Orleans in a mega-deal that would have sent Chris Paul to Portland, Devin Harris, Kris Humphries and a host of Blazers to the Hornets, Favors to Denver and Anthony and Andre Miller to the Nets, league sources said. The Portland-proposed deal would have been a great trade for the Nets and Blazers. But the talks didn’t really go anywhere. — Bergen Record

Hornets sign former Laker to boost their frontcourt depth

The New Orleans Hornets signed free agent center D.J. Mbenga Wednesday after they worked him out earlier in the day. Mbenga, 7-foot, 255 pounds, played in 49 games for the Los Angeles Lakers last season, averaging 2.1 points and 1.8 rebounds per game. Mbenga registered his first career double-double on Nov. 8, 2009 against the Hornets with 10 points and 12 rebounds. He played in three games during the 2010 playoffs, averaging 1.7 points and 1.7 rebounds. — New Orleans Times-Picayune

Chris Paul: Hornets trade rumors a “good story”

Hornets star Chris Paul opened up and discussed the trade rumors that dominated the headlines all summer long. “At first [the rumors shocked me], but everything is a good story, especially during the summer when we’re not in season. Everyone wants to talk about something to keep the NBA relevant,” said Paul with a smile. When asked if he was caught off guard by anything that took place over the summer, the point guard shrugged. “Nothing, nothing is going to catch me off guard,” said Paul, who has seen a lot throughout the course of his five-year career. — Hoops World

Warriors, Hornets bidding on free agent center

According to a source, the Warriors still believe they’ve got a shot at signing free agent center Louis Amundson, who was an effective energy player off the bench last season for the Suns. The source said he thinks the Warriors and New Orleans Hornets, among maybe another team or two, are in the mix for Amundson, and the hope is a decision will be made this week. – CSN Bay Area

Monty Williams: Hornets not done dealing

To appease Paul’s wishes to improve the roster, the Hornets acquired swingman Trevor Ariza from the Houston Rockets in a four-team deal that involved the Hornets sending backup point guard Darren Collison and forward James Posey to the Indiana Pacers. The Hornets also traded Julian Wright to the Toronto Raptors for shooting guard Marco Belinelli. “My gut feeling is that we are not done yet, ’’ coach Monty Williams said. ”Dell and I share information on both sides. I talk to him about players and he talks to me about things we can do. Maybe that’s one of the reasons why we work so well together. “Trevor and Belinelli are pieces that will make things a little more efficient. I think Trevor is going to change the dynamics of our defense, but I’m not going to put all the pressure on him to stop guys or score 15 to 20 points every night.’’ The Hornets continue to seek a backup point guard and backup center either through a trade or free agency. — New Orleans Times-Picayune

Cleveland wants Courtney Lee

In that four-team trade, the player the Cavs wanted most was not Darren Collison or Trevor Ariza. It was guard Courtney Lee of New Jersey. But the Cavs would have had to take James Posey as part of the deal, and they didn’t want to add the Twinsburg product’s $13.5 million over the next two seasons to their payroll. Posey is 33 and averaged 5.2 points, shooting 37 percent last season. – Cleveland Plain Dealer

Hornets officially take Chris Paul off trade block

The trade Wednesday of promising young point guard Darren Collison, who looked like a budding star in Chris Paul’s absence last season, officially ended any notion that the Hornets will consider trading Paul. It’s time to believe the Hornets. If Paul still wants to leave — and he fueled the earlier speculation — he’ll have to wait until he can opt out following the 2011-12 season. Until then, he better learn to like the Cajun cooking. — Fanhouse

Four NBA teams won’t get ONE national TV game

The teams that aren’t scheduled to appear: Minnesota, New Jersey, Toronto and New Orleans. The biggest gainers include two franchises that have been nearly absent from national TV for years. New York, which finally seems to have improved its roster and might give the NBA more presence in the USA’s No. 1 TV market, will get 12 games on TNT and ESPN. Oklahoma City, in the USA’s No. 45 TV market but with a budding superstar in Kevin Durant, will get 15 games, including Sunday afternoon showcase games hosting Miami (Jan. 30) and the Lakers (Feb. 27) on ABC. — USA Today
