Hawks stars contract extension talks reach deadline

If the Hawks and All-Star center Al Horford are to reach an agreement on a contract extension he said it likely won’t happen until just before the deadline. Horford said Monday the Hawks and agent Arn Tellem, who have been in discussions for nearly a month, are set to meet at the end of the week regarding an extension to the contract he signed as the No. 3 overall draft pick in 2007. If no deal is reached by the end of business Monday, then Horford would become a restricted free agent next summer once the Hawks extended him a qualifying offer by June 30. “I kind of have thought this all along, but I think it really is going to come down to the last day,” Horford said. — Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Mike Bibby will continue as Hawks starter

The only potential competition for a starting position during the preseason never really materialized so point guard Jeff Teague will back up starter Mike Bibby when Atlanta opens the season Wednesday at Memphis. “My vision was to have Jeff constantly get better and constantly grow, and if there was a clear sign of him having a major impact on the team if he played significant minutes, I wanted to be in that position to have to make a decision,” Hawks coach Larry Drew said. “But clearly that’s not the case.” — Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Hawks giving young star contract extension?

After three seasons of increasingly productive play from center Al Horford, the Hawks have decided they want him for the long term. The feeling is mutual for Horford, who said team officials and his agent, Arn Tellem, have started negotiations on a contract extension. The Hawks have until Nov. 1 to make a deal with Horford on an extension that begins in 2011-12 and can be lengthened for up to five years and about $82 million under the NBA’s current labor agreement. Horford will make $5.4 million in 2010-11, the final year of his rookie-scale contract. — Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Hawks might trade Jamal Crawford?

Since there has been no movement on the extension talks the trade discussion could be next. Two teams have made serious inquires about Jamal Crawford, per one of my league sources, only to be rebuffed by the Hawks. Crawford is entering the final year of a contract that will pay him $11.1 million this season with a new Collective Bargaining Agreement set to be negotiated at the end of this season. Crawford and his representatives approached the Hawks in July about their desire to discuss a potential contract extension, with the option of exploring trade opportunities beneficial to both sides if something couldn’t be worked out. — NBA.com

Hawks could be forced to deal star player?

So this is the dilemma faced by the Hawks. They have the most leverage because they have Jamal Crawford under contract and are under no obligation to offer him an extension or trade him. The Hawks could tell Crawford they aren’t in position to meet his contract demands and don’t intend to trade him, and then hope Crawford’s desire to showcase for his next deal while playing for a winning team eventually will trump any hurt feelings. But taking that stance could threaten the team’s chemistry and cohesion before the season even gets started. I don’t need to remind you that both of those things unraveled for the Hawks by the end of last season. L.D. already has a lot on his plate before adding a disgruntled sixth man to the list. — Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Hawks looking to extend Horford?

Al Horford can become a restricted free agent at season’s end. The Hawks would prefer he not test the market because they know full well he’d be coveted from sea to shining sea. If any Hawk is apt to receive a contract extension before Halloween, it’s Horfy. There’s almost no chance two Hawks will be offered preseason extensions at this late date. — Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Hawks don’t want Earl Boykins?

I figured maybe the Hawks wanted to bring Earl Boykins to camp as some kind of insurance, so I checked it out. I was told there’s nothing to it, that it’s a “crazy rumor” and that the Hawks are still focused on adding a big man. So it looks like Boykins won’t even get a camp invite from the Hawks.Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Hawks looking to add 5’5″ guard

The Atlanta Hawks have reached out to free agent veteran Earl Boykins, confirmed a league source to RealGM. Boykins helped stabilize a tumultuous season for the Washington Wizards, appearing in 67 games and averaging 14.2 points per 36 minutes. His 09-10 season was a return to the NBA after a lucrative interlude playing in Italy for Virtus Bologna during the 08-09 season. — Real GM

Hawks have Brian Skinner on radar, no joke

The Hawks still are in the market for a center (I’ve still heard nothing to indicate they are seeking a wing) and they have veterans Francisco Elson, Brian Skinner and Josh Boone on their radar. Not so much Kwame Brown, who is thought to still be seeking a deal for more than the vet minimum. — Atlanta Journal-Constitution

NBA player with $120 million contract dating stripper

Atlanta Hawks star Joe Johnson and his girlfriend Wynter are expecting their first child together. Wynter, isn’t the typical groupie girl that a lot of these NBA players end up with. Before meeting Johnson, Wynter worked for tips – at Atlanta’s stripclub Magic City, according to MEDIA TAKE OUT.

While working there, she met Joe and the two hit it off. The two had a WHIRLWIND ROMANCE, during which time Wynter got pregnant.

Media Take Out reports that Joe and Wynter are living together comfortably in Joe’s Miami mansion.

Police interview Lorenzen Wright’s former teammates, agents

Some family members think he may be the victim of foul play. But Herb Wright, Lorenzen’s Dad– told us: “I don’t think there’s any legitimacy to this. I’m refusing to concede that he’s missing at this time.” But others from the Lorenzen camp are worried– including his old high school coach, Fred Horton, who said: “Obviously I’m concerned about his well being. Lorenzen is like a son of mine, but I have no idea whether there was foul play.” Heuberger says his department is following all leads and continuing to work closely with the family, but adds: “A lot depends on the individual himself…whether or not he wants to be found.” The Collierville police report that since the missing persons report was filed on Wright, they have interviewed more than 100 people from his inner circle– players, family, friends, sports agents, etc.-- and there was nothing to indicate any foul play or any depression that could lead to self-inflicted trauma. — Eyewitness News Memphis

Follow Up: Lorenzen Wright’s family suspect foul play in his disappearance

The family of Lorenzen Wright, a former University of Memphis and Memphis Grizzlies basketball player who has been reported missing, said Saturday they suspect foul play. The 6-foot-11 power forward was last seen Monday at a Memphis barbershop, where he had his hair cut, said his sister, Adriane Harris. Before that, Wright was seen July 18 at his ex-wife’s house in Collierville, she said. The family reported his disappearance Thursday to Collierville police, and since then investigators have not found any indications of foul play, said city spokesman Mark Heuberger. But family members are not so sure, Harris said. Wright has been out of touch before, but “not to this extent.” “If he did go somewhere, someone could get in touch with him,” she said. “No one can.” The disappearance of the Memphis native follows several financial and personal setbacks, including a divorce and the foreclosures of two houses. — Memphis Commercial Appeal

NBA player who made $55 million has gone missing

Lorenzen Wright, a lottery pick for the Los Angeles Clippers in 1996, has gone missing, according to WREG TV.

The family of Lorenzen Wright says he’s been missing since Sunday. Wright’s sister, Savia Archie, says her family is very concerned. Archie said, Wright was last seen on sunday when he was expected to fly out of Memphis, but no one has heard from him since.

The family has filed a missing persons with the Collierville police department.

Wright, who will turn 35 in November, became a fan favorite back in high school when he played at Booker T. Washington, then the University of Memphis and later the Grizzlies.

Wright most recently played for the Cleveland Cavaliers.

He made $55,216,995 in career earning with the Clippers, Hawks, Grizzlies, Kings and Cavs.

Cavs not landing Griz Michael Conley?

Knicks have interest in Shaq?

The Knicks have inquired about a sign-and-trade with the Cavs for free agent Shaquille O’Neal. O’Neal, 38, played for D’Antoni in Phoenix for half a season in 2008. Reports, however, have O’Neal headed to Atlanta for Marvin Williams. A Knicks source said, “I don’t think it would work with us on all kinds of levels.”

Heat don’t want Shaq back in Miami?

For some reason, there is still speculation that Shaq might join the Heat. Has everyone already forgotten how he torched the organization on his way to Phoenix? I checked in with some Miami peeps I can assure they haven’t forgotten down there. It looks like the Mavs are still interested in Shaq, but after re-signing Brendan Haywood they likely want him for a bench role. Atlanta’s discussions with Shaq are still in the preliminary stages. My interpretation of that is Shaq is hedging on his money (remember, dude made $21 million last year) and accepting a bench role and is waiting to see what happens in free agency before committing to any team. He better not wait too long if he wants to play for a winner. I’ve noticed that the reports about Shaq to the Spurs have quieted down. – Atlanta Journal Constitution

Brad Miller to Hawks, Celtics or Heat?

The Hawks are still in the running for Brad Miller. “There is definitely mutual interest,” agent Mark Bartelstein said today. “Where that’s going to lead, it’s tough to say. There are a lot of things he’s looking at. Nothing has been decided.” Boston and Miami also reportedly have been talking to Miller, but a return to Chicago is still a possibility. Bartelstein said Miller could make a decision by the end of the week. – Atlanta Journal Constitution

Cavs hoping for sign and trade with Shaq

There was a rumor Shaquille O’Neal might sign with the Spurs. But they have most of their mid-level exception tied up with European center Tiago Splitter and with re-signing Matt Bonner. Atlanta is very interested in signing him. The Cavs are still trying to use him in a sign-and-trade. – CLEVELAND NEWS-HERALD

Raptors Hedo Turkoglu headed to Suns?

The Suns are on the verge of acquiring forwards Hedo Turkoglu and Josh Childress, swiftly rebounding from the loss of Amar’e Stoudemire with two quality impact players, according to the ARIZONA REPUBLIC.

The Suns would send guard Leandro Barbosa to Toronto for Turkoglu, a 6-foot-10 Turkish forward with versatile skills to shoot from long range and be a playmaker. Turkoglu could become the Suns’ starting power forward in place of Stoudemire, allowing new acquisition Hakim Warrick to come off the bench with Childress, Channing Frye, Jared Dudley and Goran Dragic.

Phoenix would acquire Childress in a sign-and-trade deal with Atlanta, which still has his rights after he left the Hawks and the NBA to take a three-year, $20 million deal with the Greek team Olympiakos in 2008. Phoenix will give up a future second-round pick to acquire Childress. The Suns would use some of their remaining $12.2 million trade exception to make both deals.
