Celtics star has had home in Atlanta for 15 years

With everything else being equal, including the money, Shaquille O’Neal said he chose the Celtics over the Hawks in the offseason because it gave him a better shot at a fifth NBA title. Boston won the 2008 NBA championship and lost to the Lakers in the 2010 Finals. “These guys are one step away,” O’Neal said before Boston played the Hawks Monday night at Philips Arena. “But I love this town. I’ve had a home in Buckhead for 15 years.” O’Neal was interested in joining the Hawks over the summer. But after Atlanta balked at increasing its offer to more than the veteran’s minimum salary, O’Neal signed with the Celtics for the same amount. In addition to their reluctance to push their payroll above the luxury tax, the Hawks were concerned whether O’Neal would accept a back-up role behind center Al Horford and mesh with a relatively young team. He’s one of five Celtics players with at least 12 years in the league. — Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Sacramento dealing with Hawks?

Kings basketball president Geoff Petrie said Saturday the team is not trying to trade Jason Thompson. Still, ESPN reported Monday that Thompson had been offered to Atlanta in a deal for point guard Jeff Teague. Thompson said the talk hasn’t affected him. He has been the subject of speculation after falling on the depth chart to the point he’s being used as a small forward and not his natural power forward spot. This season, he’s averaging 15.6 minutes, well off last season’s 31.4. Thompson is taking the talk in stride. “Until I hear it from Geoff, coach or guys who are reliable about the situation, it’s just guessing or hearsay,” he said. — Sacramento Bee

Hawks struggling bench getting boost

The Hawks could point to any of those circumstances to mitigate their three-game losing streak after a 6-0 start. They specifically could be used to explain why their bench, an asset during the team’s hot start, has become a liability, most recently in the listless loss to Milwaukee on Wednesday. “Still, consistency in effort needs to be there,” Hawks reserve center Zaza Pachulia said. “We looked at the tape, and there was no effort. It looked like we were tired. “Bad part is we lost the game, and we [reserves] were the biggest reason. The good part is this is something you can change in one game.” There’s a chance the Hawks can gain some relief by changing the lineup. Forwards Marvin Williams and Mo Evans, both recovering from knee injuries, could play Friday against Utah at Philips Arena. — Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Hornets making NBA fast start history

The Hornets defeated the Clippers by a score of 101-82 in New Orleans on Tuesday night. New Orleans is off to a 7-0 start this season after finishing last season with a 37-45 record. Only four other teams in NBA history have won each of their first seven games of a season after finishing below .500 the previous season: the St. Louis Hawks in 1967-68, the Detroit Pistons in 1970-71, the Houston Rockets in 1984-85 and the Boston Celtics in 2007-08. — Elias Sports Bureau

Pistons trading star to Hawks?

Tayshaun Prince and Will Bynum. Josh Smith, Jeff Teague and Jamal Crawford. The Detroit Pistons do not appear close to swapping either of the first two players for any of the next three for one simple reason: No trade talks have taken place between the Detroit Pistons and Atlanta Hawks, according to a Pistons source. The latest “rumor” — that the Pistons could trade Prince and another player, possibly Bynum, for Teague and Crawford — was floated in a column by Sekou Smith of NBA.com. He referred to it as “a great trade rumor” that he had heard. But according to the Pistons source, that rumor was based on nothing, just like the rumor that the Pistons could soon trade Prince to the Hawks for Smith. There have been no talks about that trade either, I am told. — Booth Newspapers

Hawks star could earn extra $7 mil with incentives

Hawks center Al Horford said the five-year, $60 million contract extension he recently signed with the Hawks also includes incentives that could increase the total value to about $67 million. The incentive clauses are based on Horford earning various superlatives, such as being voted to one of three All-NBA teams. — Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Hawks star could miss two weeks

Hawks coach Larry Drew said starting small forward Marvin Williams could miss up to two weeks because of the knee injury he suffered Wednesday at Detroit. Williams has a bone bruise in his right knee. He will be examined later this week. “After the first week, it will be about how much he can tolerate the pain,” Drew said. Drew said he doesn’t know when reserve forward Mo Evans (knee) would return; Evans hasn’t played since the season opener at Memphis. With Williams and Evans out, Drew has had to go without a true small forward. — Atlanta Journal-Constitution

NBA radio voice has called 1,800 consecutive games

Hawks radio voice Steve Holman called his 1,800th consecutive game for the team Tuesday at Cleveland. Holman has worked every game for the past 25 years, but considers his streak to have started when John Sterling left to do Yankees broadcasts in March 1989 and Holman started doing Hawks games solo. “I’m proud of it,” Holman said. “I’ve been able to stay healthy, and they’ve let me continue to do it all these years. I look forward to every game like it’s my first night, and I really mean that.” — Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Hawks Joe Smith to Detroit?

The Pistons could be interested in Hawks forward Josh Smith. The thinking is since the Hawks just signed Joe Johnson (six years, $124 million) and Al Horford (five years, $60 million) to new deals, they won’t be able to afford to keep the remaining three years and $37 million left on Smith’s deal. Plus, the Pistons made a run at Smith in the summer of 2008, so it’s understandable that they (and several other teams) would be mentioned as possible landing spots for him by the February trade deadline. However, there are some major factors working against a Pistons-Hawks swap. Take the Pistons’ two main trade chips — Tayshaun Prince and Rip Hamilton. The Pistons like Smith — front office personnel speak openly of getting players who can play above the rim and Smith fits the bill. But it’s doubtful they will be able to make any major financial commitments with the team’s sale still pending. When the sale becomes official, the Pistons would seriously consider a Hamilton-for-Smith swap as it appears Hamilton needs a change of scenery. — Detroit Free Press

Jamal Crawford only Hawks core player without long-term deal

That leaves guard Jamal Crawford as the only core player for Atlanta not signed beyond this season. Crawford, who will make $10.1 million this season, has told the team he wants to be traded if he doesn’t receive a contract extension he considers satisfactory. — Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Atlanta Hawks player takes cheap shot at Clippers owner

Etan Thomas of the Atlanta Hawks took a cheap shot at the Los Angeles Clippers on his blog: “Do the Clippers really not give their own players 24-hour access to their facilities to practice and work on their games because Donald Sterling wants to save money on the electricity bill? Guess turning on the court lights isn’t a worthy investment to him.”Hoops Hype (Blogs)

Hawks coach Larry Drew expects scrutiny

The pressure isn’t quiet as intense for Larry Drew, but there are expectations for the Hawks. They won 53 games last season and advanced to the second round of the playoffs, but coach Mike Woodson wasn’t retained. With the same core of players returning for 2009-10, the Hawks’ goal is to go further. Drew, Woodson’s lead assistant for six years, said he knows he will be under scrutiny. “I wouldn’t have accepted the job if I didn’t think I could get it done,” he said. “It comes with the territory. That’s just the way it is.” — Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Hawks Josh Powell misses Lakers

Lakers coach Phil Jackson thanked Josh Powell for his contributions to the team’s championship during a ring ceremony in Los Angeles on Tuesday night. Powell, now with the Hawks, said he saw the ceremony and appreciated the gesture. Several Lakers players talked about the team’s cohesiveness, and Powell said it was real. “The experiences and the relationships that I built there are definitely things to miss,” he said. “But I have a new family now, and we’ve got things we are trying to accomplish. I wish their organization and team all the best this year.” — Atlanta Journal-Constitution
