Florida football assistant to join Ohio State staff

Stan Drayton, a Cleveland native and John Marshall High grad who is currently the running backs coach at Florida, will be named to the Ohio State football staff, most likely in an announcement later this week, a source confirmed Tuesday night. Drayton will replace receivers coach Darrell Hazell, who left the Buckeyes after the season to become the head coach at Kent State. Drayton was on the Florida staff when the Gators beat the Buckeyes in the national title game after the 2006 season. He has also coached at Syracuse and Tennessee, among other stops. — Cleveland Plain Dealer

Florida to consider Mullen, Whittingham and Stoops

One of the most obvious destinations could be tiny Starkville, Miss., where former Urban Meyer offensive coordinator Dan Mullen has turned perennial loser Mississippi State into a winning program in just his second season. Mullen’s mentor was Meyer, and his MSU program mirrors the one Meyer established at Florida. At 38, Mullen is one of the youngest head coaches in college football, and he has serious ties to UF and many of the top high school coaches in Florida. … Another potential Foley trip could be to the place where his last coaching search ended — Salt Lake City, where he sealed the deal six years ago with Meyer. … Meyer’s defensive coordinator at Utah, Kyle Whittingham, replaced Meyer, and the Utes have continued the success Meyer started at the program in his two seasons there. Norman, Okla., may or may not be on Foley’s travel itinerary, but chances are good he will place a call there to Oklahoma’s Bob Stoops to see if there is any interest from the former UF defensive coordinator under Steve Spurrier. Stoops rebuffed Foley in 2002 and did not show much interest again in 2004, but he’s one of the premier coaches in college football and has stayed in touch with Foley and others at UF over the years. — Gainesville Sun

Oregon’s Brian Kelly has $4 million buyout

Which makes Oregon coach Brian Kelly a desirable choice for a power program such as Florida. But the contract to which Kelly agreed earlier this season throws up a couple stumbling blocks. First, it carries a $4 million buyout, which is a lot of scratch for anybody, no matter how well heeled. And, a clause in the contract stipulates that Kelly must give Oregon 15 days written notice before leaving, and further stipulates he cannot leave during the regular season or before a postseason bowl game in which Oregon is a participant. — Oregonian

Urban Meyer says Florida Gators’ Steve Addazio will return, but he doesn’t guarantee it

Florida coach Urban Meyer said he plans to bring back his current coaching staff for next season, but has not finished his evaluation process. For the second time in the past month, Meyer indicated Steve Addazio will be back as the Gators’ offensive coordinator, but stopped short of guaranteeing it. “I am expecting that to happen,” Meyer said of Addazio’s return. “I’ll have further updates as we get closer to the bowl game. Everybody’s out recruiting and doing their business. “At this time, I can’t make any statements because there’s so much going on with the profession right now.” The only current vacancy Meyer needs to fill is at defensive line. Former Florida defensive line coach Dan McCarney left the team last week to become North Texas’ head coach. Graduate assistant Tony Weaver, who played at Notre Dame and spent seven seasons in the NFL, has the job in the interim. — Palm Beach Post

The Big Ten has played by far the fewest non-Saturday games of any conference (30) since 2000, while the Mid-American Conference has played the most (282). Urban Meyer repeats he’ll ‘absolutely’ remain as Florida coach

For the second time this week, Urban Meyer has made something perfectly clear — he plans to remain as the head coach at Florida in 2011. Following Thursday’s practice, Meyer said he will “absolutely” be Florida’s coach next season and said “nothing” will get in his way of coming back. Questions arose about Meyer’s return because of his health issues that forced his short resignation before last year’s bowl game and his eventual leave of absence after the 2009 season. Meyer returned to the team, but has delegated some of his old duties to his assistant coaches this season. “The head coach will be back next year,” Meyer said during his Monday press conference. “I’m going to do the best I can to get this thing back to the elite level that we all expect.” — Gainesville Sun

Urban Meyer gives Gators asst vote of confidence

Urban Meyer said Monday that Steve Addazio would return as Florida’s offensive coordinator and offensive line coach in 2011 despite overseeing an offense that has struggled all season and a line that has underachieved despite starting four seniors. “I don’t think [Addazio not returning as offensive coordinator] will happen,” Meyer said Monday. “I’m not into blame. I’m not into excuses. We’re into solutions and right now the solution is somehow have a great Tuesday and Wednesday. I know that’s a coach-speak answer, especially around here, but that’s what we do. “We started heading in the right direction [on offense]. We’ve got to get the momentum back. We failed to capitalize on that last week offensively.” Meyer’s vote of confidence comes after Florida’s offense was embarrassingly bad in a 36-14 loss to South Carolina on Saturday. — Florida Times-Union

Florida Gators football fans keep police busy

According to a study in the Drug and Alcohol Dependence journal this year, there are about six times as many alcohol-related arrests in Gainesville on game days when Florida’s football team is at home as there are on Saturdays when there’s not a game. Co-author Lisa Merlo, a psychiatry professor at the school, scoured the Gainesville Police Department’s public-arrest records from 2005-06 to document how many alcohol-related arrests there were on specific days. She found that on 10 Saturdays when there were home football games, there was an average of 70.3 alcohol-related arrests a day—that number plummeted to 11.8 on Saturdays when there weren’t games. The study also analyzed what happened during 10 major holidays to try determining whether the alcohol influx had more to do with general celebration than football. The average number of alcohol-related arrests on those days only jumped to 12.3, a 4% uptick. — Wall Street Journal

Auburn QB Cam Newton leak violated federal laws?

Florida coach Urban Meyer has denied being the source for a FoxSports.com story alleging academic cheating by Auburn QB Cam Newton during his time at Florida. Whoever leaked the info, however, could face legal repercussions. According to The Buckley Amendment, a university or institution cannot release confidential information without the consent of the student. According to the FoxSports.com story, Newton allegedly had three different instances of academic cheating during his two years at Florida. The story said Newton faced expulsion at UF before leaving the school after the fall 2008 semester (although, this story says it’s unlikely Newton would have been expelled). “We can’t comment on federally protected student records,” UF spokesman Steve McClain said. It’s unclear who the source for the story was, but UF seems the likely place to start looking. — Orlando Sentinel

SEC team captain wants NO part of pregame coin toss

Mike Pouncey hasn’t been stripped of his captaincy. He just doesn’t want any part of the pregame coin toss. Florida’s senior center went out with the other captains before the season opener, but he hasn’t been back since. He’s a bit superstitious, plus he prefers running out of the tunnel with his teammates. “Since we’ve been here, that’s what I like doing,” Pouncey said Monday. “I like leading the team out. I was trying to figure out why I played so bad the first game. I went out for the coin toss and I told coach [Urban] Meyer, ‘Don’t ever, ever pick me to go out for the coin toss,’ and he said, ‘You got it.’ ” Pouncey has just two games remaining at Florida Field — Saturday against South Carolina and Nov. 20 against Appalachian State — and he’s content to stay in the tunnel, even for senior day. “Only two more times out, but I won’t be going out for the coin toss, though,” he said. — Florida Times-Union

Gators Trey Burton playing like Tim Tebow?

Florida coach Urban Meyer was asked if he could compare the value Trey Burton has to this year’s team to Tim Tebow’s value to the ’06 team that won the national championship. “Tremendous value,” Meyer said. “I don’t know if I can do that because they’re both unique guys. I think very similar because they brought so much to this team. “We went through (Burton’s) job description yesterday when we were game-planning, and it should be illegal what we ask that kid to do. The fact he can do it all and still manage taking the shotgun snap and run this offense at a high level, that’s enough. “The fact we’ve got him playing all the other positions, it’s just a marvel. He’s a tremendous player.” Given the fact Burton is now sharing time with Brantley and still playing at the other positions, is his value bigger than what Tebow’s was to the 2006 team? “I can’t make that,” Meyer said. “I can’t and I won’t make that (comparison) because I don’t know.” — Gainesville Sun

Florida Gators coach Urban Meyer presents game ball to a sportswriter

For a lifelong Gator fan whose nemesis (and biggest rival) over the years was Georgia, how’s this for the perfect birthday present: A game ball from Florida’s overtime victory over Georgia, presented by UF coach Urban Meyer. That’s what happened to Robbie Andreu’s father on Monday, on what would have been his 88th birthday. In a wonderful and greatly appreciated gesture, Meyer opened his weekly Monday press conference by presenting a game ball to Andreu in honor of the real Robbie Andreu, who died on Oct. 21. — Gainesville Sun via Orlando Sentinel

Urban Meyer concedes Gators offense needs overhaul

Florida is aware of its long list of problems to fix on offense – deficiencies exist in every facet – but the Gators might not be able to correct all of those on the bye week. Some of those issues might last all year. Falling at then-No. 1 Alabama and a home loss to LSU on a last-minute trick play and touchdown pass were not deflating. But the latest disappointment, losing 10-7 to unranked Mississippi State on Homecoming, pushed Gators coach Urban Meyer to acknowledge that the offense needs to be reworked completely before facing Georgia on Oct. 30. “I think so,” Meyer said. “We have to be able to run the ball. I think the offensive line gets hammered pretty good, whether it’s deserving or not. There’s enough blame to go everywhere.” — Palm Beach Post

Gork, a Florida graduate who was fired by The Hog after an incident in which she wore a Florida cap to University Of Arkansas football coach Bobby Petrino’s press conference, will also help out with student interns at the station. — All Access

Urban Meyer rare underdog in SEC battle

The Gators, 30-2 the past three seasons, were almost double-digit underdogs this week. And Meyer is an underdog coach of any sort only slightly more often than I wear pink pants, which is never. “I was surprised it opened up at 9 or 9½, and I said, ‘That line is going to come down,’ ” Northcoast Sports handicapper Phil Steele said. But the line has come down just a little. Alabama is an 8-point favorite over Florida in Tuscaloosa on Saturday. “I think this one goes down to the wire, and I give Florida a shot to win the game,” Steele said. “Meyer is very rarely an underdog, so this is an advantage for him.” Meyer has coached the Gators in 71 games since 2005 and is 3-0 as an underdog. He’s 8-2 straight up and 8-1-1 against the spread versus top-five opponents. Steele (philsteele.com) used Florida as the “Underdog Play of the Week” in his newsletter, calling for the Crimson Tide to win, 24-23. — Las Vegas Review-Journal

Alabama welcomes top recruits against Florida

Football fans aren’t the only ones excited about this weekend’s matchup between No. 1 Alabama and seventh-ranked Florida. It is a game recruits have circled on their calendar for months, with many elite prospects expected to arrive from across the country. Three players are currently scheduled for official visits: Nick O’Leary, Scout.com five-star tight end from Dwyer High School in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.; Florida commitment A.C. Leonard, four-star tight end from University Christian School in Jacksonville, Fla.; and Jabari Gorman, three-star cornerback from Pace High School in Miami. – Tuscaloosa News

Florida’s Chris Rainey ‘not part of team’ after his arrest

One of the key offensive football players at the University of Florida is at least temporarily off the team after his arrest early Tuesday on accusations of aggravated stalking. Gators wide receiver Chris Rainey, 22, of Lakeland, was charged with aggravated stalking of a woman he had been dating on and off for about three years. Following Rainey’s arrest, Florida offensive coordinator Steve Addazio said he “is not part of the team right now.” “That’s all I really have to say on that,” Addazio said. “I hope you guys can appreciate that. I’d rather talk about getting ready for this game (against Tennessee).” Florida coach Urban Meyer was not available for comment Tuesday. He will address the news media today on the SEC’s weekly coaches’ teleconference. — Gainesville Sun

Pete Rose helps Florida Gators offensive lineman

Pete Rose may have solved the Florida Gators’ snapping problems. Seriously. No, not that Rose. Mike Pouncey, an All-SEC lineman last year who shifted to center to take the spot vacated by his twin brother, Maurkice, after he let for the NFL, got a lot of criticism last week after struggling snapping the football when Florida was in shotgun formation. And he got a lot of advice prior to Saturday’s 38-14 win against South Florida. But the person who may have done him the most good actually works in the Florida equipment room. “There’s an equipment guy on our team named Peter Rose,” Pouncey said. “He told me I was too balanced on my stance and I’m not comfortable like that. He told me to put a stagger in my stance. I was like, ‘What am I going to listen to him for.’ But it worked for me.” — Florida Today
