Over the past 25 years, Duke has seen 15 players taken in the lottery (top 14 picks), only 26.6% of them (4) have scored at least 13.1 ppg over their careers. The Wall Street Journal reports thats the scoring average for all non-Duke lottery picks over the last quarter of a century.

Georgia’s Mark Richt is making his third visit to poor areas of Honduras on a religious charity trip. The football coach who sits on a very hot seat some 1,400 miles away in Athens, Georgia, was touched by the low quality of drinking water in the village of San Antonio, Honduras.

At walk’s end was the main community water source — a two-tiered catch basin collecting a trickle of milky, almost opaque water from up the hillside. The top basin was for drinking water, the lower one for washing clothes.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports Richt will reach out to Bulldog fans to help fix the water issues

Passing by Holuba Hall, where several football players were conducting unsupervised workouts, Paterno stopped to watch for a few minutes without speaking to anyone, he said. Suitably impressed, he returned to his office where he reported to the coaching staff that at least one player had looked good and caught his eye. “You know you broke a rule?” someone said, pointing out that coaches aren’t permitted to watch players working out before the start of practice in August. Penn State spokesman Jeff Nelson said the university will report the incident to the NCAA.

- Hummingbirds can be conceived and born in the time (18-23 days) it takes college football’s Bowl Season and March Madness to crown a champion

- The NFL and MLB playoffs last between 24-and-29 days, just enough time for a Peacock to be conceived and born, not the kind at NBC.

- Not many American’s watch the Cricket World Cup, but a Kangaroo could be created and come to life in the time (42 days) it took to complete the 2011 event.

- Alligator shows are pretty popular on TV these days, thats good for the NBA and NHL. The 54-to-63 days it takes them to finish the postseason, is enough time to create a baby alligator.

- Champions League Soccer is the real winner, they have a postseason that goes between 92-to-102 days, long enough for a Snow Leopard to be conceived and born.

His answer was surprising.

“Most played…I don’t know, I want to say Katy Perry, “Fireworks.” It’s intense.”

Ja’Juan also talked about his favorite pregame ritual.

“Well, I take a doodoo. Before every game I doodoo. Well, that’s the only thing I do. That’s one thing I have to do before every game, or I won’t feel energy, and I’ll just feel slow.
When told that this interview was actually going to run on the web, Story didn’t back down from his game prep.

“Well, I mean, that’s what it is. I doodoo and then listen to Katy Perry.”

Some college football programs struggle to sell tickets to home games, imagine being able to sell close 40,000 to a road game. Thats just what LSU was able to pull off. WWL-TV reports the SEC school’s fans purchased 37,000 tickets to LSU’s opening game against Oregon in Cowboys Stadium in Dallas on Sept. 3.

The 37,000 tickets distributed for the game to Tiger fans through the LSU ticket office is the most ever for a regular season away game for the school, surpassing the 31,000 sold for the Tulane game in New Orleans in 2007 and 25,000 for the 2010 season opener against North Carolina in the Chick-fil-A Classic in Atlanta. As a result of the 37,000 tickets being sold to season ticket holders, tickets for the Cowboys Classic game against Oregon will not go on sale to the general public through LSU, Broussard said. Broussard added that ticket requests from LSU season ticket holders for the Oregon game had already surpassed the school’s allotted amount of 37,000.

Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas is 460 miles away from Baton Rouge, Louisiana. It will take Tigers fans 7 hours and 34 minutes to make the road trip to see the LSU vs. Oregon game.

Keep in mind during the 2010 college football season these teams finished in the bottom ten in attendance. They would need several home games to sell 37,000 tickets.

College football players are “amateur athletes,” but ESPN will use them to replace the pro’s. Walt Disney CEO Bob Iger said his cash cow cable sports network won’t feel much of a sting without the NFL because of a lockout. AD WEEK reports the executive with Mickey Mouse ears has a plan for replacement programming.

Iger went on to note that ESPN holds the rights to air nearly 300 NCAA football games, which would serve as contextually appropriate replacement programming in the event of the NFL season being scuttled. “We will see some extremely, extremely improved pricing for ESPN’s college football games. CPMs will be up, rates will be up,” Iger said. “They’ll probably expand their format so that they’ll add more inventory in order to take advantage of that. So the significant increases we’ll see not just in college football but in other ESPN programming will offset, at least somewhat, the impact of a [lockout].”

It was also noted that ESPN has the least to lose among the NFL’s network TV partners.

Under terms of its rights deal, ESPN’s Monday Night Football carries the lightest spot load of the NFL’s TV partners, with ad sales adding up to around $175 million. By comparison, Fox last season had the most skin in the game, having generated more than $975 million in ad dollars with its Sunday NFC package.

The CARROLL COUNTY TIMES reports the Ravens GM was asked about returning to his alma mater as athletic director.

“Well, I don’t know,” Newsome said tonight during a conference call with season ticket holders. “I’m enjoying it. I’ve got a young quarterback, a young back, a stud defensive tackle. Terrell Suggs has been here for seven years and is only 27 years old. “I’m still enjoying this. I’ve got a great working relationship with the owner, the president and the head coach. I’ve got a great building to come to work. Now that they’ve got Nick Saban, they don’t need me. Nick is running everything. Now that Nick’s down there, it allows me to stay up here and enjoy this.”

In a May 3 letter, Varney asked National Collegiate Athletic Association President Mark Emmert if he attempted to establish playoffs before the championship game, as is the case in other sports.
“Serious questions continue to arise suggesting that the current Bowl Championship Series system may not be conducted consistent with the competition principles expressed in the federal antitrust laws,” Varney wrote.

The IRS has been dragged into this battle to get rid of the BCS and add a new college football playoff system.

Playoff PAC, a political action committee that wants the sport to adopt playoffs and scrap its system of using polls and computer rankings, filed a complaint in September with the Internal Revenue Service. The group said the Fiesta, Orange and Sugar Bowls are violating their tax-exempt status by providing excessive compensation to executives, spending undisclosed amounts on lobbying and intervening in political campaigns.
