Former NFL star working as party DJ?

Former Chiefs RB Larry Johnson was released by the Redskins a few weeks ago, he’s now working as a DJ at parties, according to MEDIA TAKE OUT

Lions have 31 players drafted in top 3 rounds

  • With seven interceptions already in 247 attempts, Donovan McNabb, who has the second-best interception percentage in NFL history, is averaging a pick every 35.3 passes this season. It’s the second-worst interception ratio of his career. As a rookie, he averaged a pick every 30.8 attempts.
  • The Giants’ Ahmad Bradshaw leads the league in rushing with 708 yards. The last time a Giants running back led the league in rushing was Eddie Price in 1951. Price won the rushing crown in the then 12-team NFL with 971 yards. The only other Giants running back to ever lead the league in rushing was Bill Paschal, who did it in ’42 and ’43.
  • Eagles tight end Brent Celek is tied with the Vikings’ Randy Moss for most dropped passes after 7 weeks. Celek and Moss both have six drops. Rams wideouts Danny Amendola and Brandon Graham, both ex-Eagles, are tied for third with five.
  • In his last four starts, Chiefs quarterback Matt Cassell has thrown eight TD passes and just one interception. He has a 108.9 passer rating in those four games.
  • Thirty-one of the 53 players on the Lions roster were first-, second- or third-round draft picks, selected by the Lions or someone else. They’ve got 11 first-rounders, 10 second-rounders and 10 third-rounders.
  • There were 34 field goals of 50 yards or more in the first 7 weeks, which is the most since 1970. That’s an 83-field goal pace, which would shatter the existing record of 66 for 50-plus-yard field goals in a season set in 2008.
  • The Titans are 29th in the league in pass offense, averaging just 170.9 passing yards per game. But they’re fourth in passing efficiency with a 95.5 passer rating. – Philadelphia Daily News

Chiefs star has last name tattooed accross his back

Dwayne Bowe is still the kind of man who owns a hat that says “I AM THE GREATEST” and has his last name tattooed across his back, like a jersey. The NFL is full of testosterone and grown men busting with confidence, but even by these high standards, Bowe has All-Pro swagger. Maybe now, finally, when the Chiefs need it most, his play is starting to match. Everyone matures on different timelines and for different reasons, and at 26 and in his fourth pro season it’s far too late but in other ways just in time.

Chambers in Chiefs doghouse

Wide receiver Chris Chambers, a former starter, wasn’t active for the second straight game. Chambers, who has just seven receptions for 76 yards this season, hasn’t had much of an impact and coach Todd Haley appears tired of waiting for him to produce. Chambers has a sore finger that is heavily wrapped when he practices, but he wasn’t listed on the injury report at the end of last week. — KC Star

NFL rookie was born with congenital disorder

Javier Arenas is a Chiefs rookie, 22 years old, quick and tough. He’s a cornerback and kick-return specialist, and he’s good at that. Maybe the thing he’s best at, though, is bouncing back. That’s what he did when he was 13, when he first got that scar. A cardiologist discovered that young Javier had been born with a double aortic arch, a congenital disorder in which the aorta is forked near his heart, and the arches were suppressing his windpipe. It explained why the youngster kept needing breaks when he ran around at school; why activity was so exhausting to him. His esophagus was being pinched by his heart’s fingers, and surgery was necessary. “I thought it was all over for me,” he says now. About six weeks after the abnormality was found, an 8-inch incision became a pathway to the boy’s heart. The cardiologist repaired the problem, easing pressure on the boy’s esophagus. Javier spent a week in the hospital, and he carried a heart monitor to make certain his body was recovering. It was a long process, he had been told, and after about a year, he’d be fully recuperated, breathing better and maybe playing football again, but he’d just have to … — KC Star

NFL player has 10 career catches, all for touchdowns

•  Chicago’s Devin Hester returned a punt 89 yards for a touchdown in the Bears’ 23-20 loss to Seattle.  In his career, Hester has 13 combined kick-return touchdowns (nine PR-TD, four KR-TD), tied with Brian Mitchell (13) for the most in NFL history.  Hester’s nine career punt-return touchdowns are tied with Mitchell for the second-most in league history (Eric Metcalf, 10).

•        New England quarterback Tom Brady passed for 292 yards in the Patriots’ 23-20 overtime win over Baltimore.  Brady has won 23 consecutive regular-season starts at home and passed Pro Football Hall of Famer John Elway (1996-1998) for the second-longest streak of consecutive regular-season home wins as a starting quarterback.  Brett Favre has the longest such streak with 25 consecutive home wins with the Green Bay Packers (1995-1998).

•       New York Jets running back LaDainian Tomlinson rushed for two touchdowns in the Jets’ 24-20 victory at Denver.  Tomlinson has 38 career games with at least two rushing touchdowns, the most in NFL history.  Pro Football Hall of Famer Emmitt Smith ranks second in NFL history with 36 such games.

•        Minnesota running back Adrian Peterson rushed for 73 yards in the Vikings’ 24-21 win over Dallas.  Peterson has 5,037 career rushing yards and reached the 5,000-yard mark in his 51st game. He tied Jamal Lewis (51) to become the fifth-fastest running back to reach 5,000 rushing yards.

•        Pittsburgh wide receiver Hines Ward had five receptions for 54 yards and one touchdown in the Steelers’ 28-10 win over Cleveland.  Ward has now caught a pass in 183 consecutive games, tying Pro Football Hall of Famer Art Monk (1983-1995) for the fourth-longest such streak.  Pro Football Hall of Famer Jerry Rice holds the NFL record with 274 consecutive games with a reception (1985-2004).

•        Kansas City linebacker Mike Vrabel had a touchdown reception in the Chiefs’ 35-31 loss at Houston.   Vrabel, who has 10 career catches with all 10 of them resulting in a touchdown, is the only player who began his career after 1933 with at least 10 receptions with all of them going for a TD.

•        New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning threw two touchdown passes and led the Giants to a 28-20 win over Detroit.  In his career, Manning is 19-4 (.826) as a starter in October, the best mark among quarterbacks who began their career in the Super Bowl era (minimum 20 starts).

Chiefs coach gives QB Matt Cassel, WR Dwayne Bowe votes of confidence

Chiefs and coach Todd Haley continues to show uncommon patience with wide receiver Dwayne Bowe. His third-quarter dropped pass in the end zone was a key play in the Chiefs’ first loss of the season Sunday in Indianapolis. A catch would have given the Chiefs a 13-9 lead, but instead they settled for a field goal on the possession and eventually lost 19-9. Dropped balls have been a problem for Bowe almost from the day he joined the Chiefs in 2007, but Haley didn’t sound on Monday like a coach ready to give up on Bowe anytime soon. “Dwayne Bowe did so many good things in that game, so many good things,” Haley said. “He played smart, he understood the game plan and what he was supposed to do, and he did it at a high level in the run game and the pass game. It just so happens that he had an opportunity to make a big play, which is part of his job description . . . and he didn’t make it. That ends up being a not-so-good thing, but Dwayne Bowe’s arrow is going up. There isn’t a doubt in my mind. “We have won with Dwayne, and we will continue to win with Dwayne.” Haley also aggressively defended quarterback Matt Cassel, who hasn’t taken the Chiefs to a touchdown in either of their two road games. — KC Star

Texans, Rams local TV ratings up 51%

Not that the NFL deserves such luck. Its TV windows for its game telecasts are averaging 11.7% of U.S. households. That’s up 9% from last year and the highest average, through Week 4, since 1989. The big winners in local TV ratings in teams’ own markets: Houston (up 51%), St. Louis (51%), Washington (44%), Kansas City (38%) and New Orleans (30%). — USA Today

Chiefs DT Shaun Smith will appeal $10k fine for grabbing men’s junk

Chiefs defensive lineman Shaun Smith said Wednesday that he would appeal the $10,000 fine the NFL handed him for striking an opponent in the groin area. Smith was accused in consecutive weeks by opposing offensive linemen for grabbing their genitals during plays. Both times, Smith’s alleged actions drew 15-yard penalties against Cleveland and, a week later, San Francisco. Smith said that was the first time the NFL had fined him in his eight seasons. He didn’t deny grabbing Cleveland’s Alex Mack or San Francisco’s Anthony Davis. He said the fine, regardless of whether it’s reduced, wouldn’t affect the way he plays. “Why should it?” he said. “If you get stuck with the 10 grand, that’s a lot of money. That’s some people’s salaries. It is what it is.” — KC Star

NFL lineman nicknamed “Genital Giant”

Chiefs DT Shaun Smith, of course, hasn’t admitted to anything. He did tape a strongly worded letter from a Browns fan near his locker, in which he was called names far worse than the nickname making the rounds: Shaun Smith, the “Genital Giant.” For now, Smith’s teammates won’t discuss the topic of dirty play and whether Smith, the loudest and brashest Chiefs player, would be capable of grabbing someone down south. Coaches aren’t saying much, either — but Bill Maas says that doesn’t mean they don’t value that Smith listened to his coaches way back when, remembering now that his job is to stop his opponent by any means necessary. “Don’t think for one second that Todd Haley isn’t glad he has a guy like that on his team,” Maas says. “He can’t say it. He’ll never say it. He likes the guy. Because he brings a nastiness to his defense. “You have to say things politically correct. It’s no different from the gladiators in the Roman days. Same thing. People are there to see violence. Violence is going to happen. But you can’t talk about it. … You play in a frenzy, and you really don’t care about much else.” — KC Star

Chiefs set nine year old NFL mark

If you’re wondering how weird it is that there’s only one undefeated team in the NFL just four weeks into the season, here’s your answer: very weird. And no, it’s not because that one undefeated team is the Kansas City Chiefs, who were a league doormat for the past three seasons. This is actually the first time in nine years that the number of undefeated teams has been pared to one this early in the season. In league history, it takes, on average, 6.3 weeks in the season for there to be only one undefeated team left. It took 15 weeks to reach this point last season and, since the 1970 merger, there have only been six other times where there was only one undefeated team this early. That Kansas City is the lone perfect team this early can partly be chalked up to parity, and partly to luck. The New York Jets are a one-point loss against the Baltimore Ravens away from being unblemished—they’ve won their other three games by an average of 15 points—and the Chiefs were a field goal away from losing to the lowly Cleveland Browns in Week 2 (not to mention the Chiefs just had a bye week so they’ve only played three games). — Wall Street Journal

Chiefs player won’t talk about grabbing players testicles

Chiefs DE Shaun Smith not sure he likes the national media attention he’s received after an opposing player accused Smith of grabbing his opponents’ testicles for the second straight week. “I have no comment on that,” Smith said. “Football is a contact sport. I’ve been playing football since I was 6 (years old), and it’s always been a contact sport. I don’t get into the national publicity or pay any attention to that. I’m here to play football and help my team win games.” — KC Star

Chiefs Tamba Hali becomes superstar?

Coach Todd Haley has said that Tamba Hali, in his fifth year, has a chance to become one of the league’s best pass rushers, and he showed Sunday that he’s capable. Hali had three sacks in a game against Denver last year, and before that, the Chiefs had gone without a three-sack performance since Allen did it against Washington in 2005. Hali might not say much, but that doesn’t mean he’ll go unnoticed the rest of this season. If Crennel’s scheme keeps working, you can be certain of that. That much showed in one afternoon at Arrowhead Stadium. “That is a really good day,” Haley said, “and that is good for the Chiefs.” – KC Star

Chiefs could dump QB Matt Cassel after season?

Kansas City QB Matt Cassel is running out of excuses for his poor play. They can run the ball, and they’re playing better on defense. Sure, there isn’t an abundance of playmakers, but they didn’t give Cassel his big contract to win despite him. I continue to think the Chiefs will strongly consider getting out of this contract in the offseason. — NFL Network

Haley: Chiefs not worried about balancing running backs

There’s plenty of angst in Kansas City over the Chiefs and their liberal use of Thomas Jones as their featured running back instead of Jamaal Charles. The one place where it’s seemingly not much of an issue is at the Chiefs’ coaching offices at their Truman Sports Complex practice facility. “It is in no way a problem for us,” coach Todd Haley said. “So far, through two games in the first quarter of the season, I would grade us as being successful.” That’s a reference to their 2-0 record as the Chiefs prepare for Sunday’s game against San Francisco at Arrowhead Stadium. But because the Chiefs are having problems passing consistently, there’s an awareness they may need to squeeze even more from their running game. The Chiefs are undefeated in part because of what they’ve been able to accomplish on the ground. They’re fifth in the league in rushing yardage. — KC Star

Chiefs Matt Cassel worst QB since Browning Nagle

The short-term joy of being 2-0 after a 16-14 win over the Browns on Sunday is clouded by the long-term reality check that all the progress being made under coach Todd Haley and general manager Scott Pioli will mean bupkis if Matt Cassel doesn’t improve. Two games into his second season with the Chiefs, we’re still waiting for him to be effective. He completed just 16 of 28 passes for 176 yards with two interceptions and no touchdowns. His passer rating is now 55.8. No quarterback has started at least 12 games with a passer rating that low since Browning Nagle for the Jets in 1992. Haley wrote off Cassel’s miserable season opener by referencing brutal conditions and an ultraconservative game plan. There was none of that Sunday, and Cassel led no touchdown drives against a defense that finished 31st last year. The Chiefs’ only touchdown came on defense, and one of their three field goals was gift-wrapped when linebacker Mike Vrabel forced a fumble and the offense took over at the Browns’ 22. Here’s a depressing sentence: The Chiefs have scored 13 points on 20 possessions that started on their half of the field this season. — KC Star

Chiefs extend Studebaker’s contract

Outside linebacker Andy Studebaker confirmed Thursday that he and the Chiefs agreed to a contract extension that will keep him in Kansas City for “hopefully a long time,” he said. Studebaker, a converted defensive end who joined the Chiefs in 2008, agreed to the deal earlier this week. Neither Studebaker nor his agent, Josh Wright, would reveal the terms of the extension. Studebaker’s previous contract was set to expire after this season, and Wright said it was important to get something worked out early. “Nobody wanted it to be a distraction,” he said. — KC Star

NFL Pro Bowlers company accused of violating labor laws

A cleaning company co-owned by former Chiefs tight end Tony Gonzalez fumbled on the Arrowhead Stadium renovation project, according to the county prosecutor. Misdemeanor charges were filed last week in Jackson County Circuit Court in Independence against Xtreme Clean 88 for failing to make sufficient benefit payments under prevailing wage laws last year at Arrowhead. An attorney for the company said it was in the midst of making up the payments when the prosecutor’s office took its action. — KC Star

NFL exec quits after 36 years

A day after the Chiefs organization’s most successful day in years, the team announced that its president was stepping down. Ambulance shows up at Chiefs practice

The Chiefs apparently had a player taken away from the practice field by ambulance after the media members watching the opening portion of the workout were escorted from the field Monday. An ambulance arrived at the practice facility in the latter stages of the workout. Coach Todd Haley didn’t confirm the Chiefs had an incident at practice other than to indicate something might have happened to one of the team’s injured players. “There’s nobody I know of right now,” Haley said when asked about the issue after practice. “The guys out there practicing practiced hard. I didn’t see anything occur where … We’re fighting through some things with some guys you’ve been aware of.” Tackle Ryan O’Callaghan, defensive end Alex Magee and linebacker Cameron Sheffield are the three players on the active roster who were conditioning rather than practicing during the media access portion of practice. O’Callaghan and Magee were spotted in the locker room after practice. The Chiefs don’t have to file with the league an injury report for Monday night’s game against San Diego at Arrowhead Stadium until later in the week. — KC Star

Vegas picks Colts to win Super Bowl

Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts are favored by Las Vegas oddsmakers to win the Super Bowl after coming up short in their championship bid last season. The Colts enter the regular season with 13-2 odds of capturing their second National Football League title in five years, according to Las Vegas Sports Consultants, which advises Nevada’s sports books on betting lines. The 34-year-old Manning led the Colts to an NFL-best 14-2 record last season and beat out New Orleans quarterback Drew Brees to win his fourth Most Valuable Player award before losing to the Saints 31-17 in the Super Bowl. The 31-year-old Brees’s Saints are tied with the Dallas Cowboys as the second Super Bowl choice with odds of 8-1. Chargers watching Notre Dame game film to get ready for opener

Given that their first regular-season opponent has new offensive and defensive coordinators, the Chargers have spent extra time and watched some different film than just that of the Kansas City Chiefs. “Obviously there’s a lot of moving parts because of the changes in their staff,” Chargers head coach Norv Turner said. The Chiefs in January hired former Notre Dame head coach Charlie Weis as their offensive coordinator and former Cleveland Browns head coach Romeo Crennel as their defensive coordinator. Weis and Crennel were previously coordinators together for three of the New England Patriots’ Super Bowl wins. So the Chargers watched myriad game film during the spring as early preparation for their Sept. 13 season opener. “You look at Cleveland and Notre Dame, and you look at New England when Charlie was in New England,” Turner said. — San Diego Union-Tribune

Chiefs Brodie Croyle tests injured arm

Chiefs backup quarterback Brodie Croyle returned to practice last week, but he threw his first passes Monday after missing most of the last two weeks because of a right arm injury. In a team drill Monday, Croyle handed off on his first two snaps and then threw toward tight end Leonard Pope, who dropped Croyle’s pass. Croyle completed two passes to Pope before the end of the session, and one of those was in the end zone. “It was good to see him out there,” coach Todd Haley said of Croyle. “He’s one of the guys that has to get better to help us become a good team. To see him out there and get through, with no issues, I thought it was a good sign. “He didn’t look overly rusty, although we all had cans of Rust-Oleum in our pockets.” — KC Star

Chiefs want fans to vote for their favorite super hero (sandwich)

Kansas City Chiefs fans don’t get to pick the players, but now they have some say on the sandwiches. Arrowhead Stadium’s new food and beverage partner, Aramark, is inviting fans to vote on one of three offerings to decide what will be the stadium’s “signature” sandwich. “We want to meet and exceed all expectations,” said Brad Pernaw, general manager of Aramark’s Arrowhead operations. “We’ve eaten all the sandwiches, and we like them a lot. Now we need some help selecting the signature sandwich.” Aramark’s executive chef at Arrowhead, Erin Wishon, worked on about a dozen ideas before narrowing it down to three choices, all with some kind of Kansas City tie-in. Two have barbecue, the other option is sort of a brunch sandwich in a nod to noon kickoffs.KC Star
