Chiefs eye Bucs offensive coordinator?

Chiefs candidates could include Tampa Bay offensive coordinator Greg Olson and former Denver offensive coordinator Mike McCoy. But Olson has another year left on his Tampa Bay contract and the Chiefs may not be able to pry him loose. Haley said he would examine the possibility of doing the job himself again next season.

Chiefs might not hire new offensive coordinator?

Steelers offense better than ’08 Super Bowl winners

  • When it was all said and done, the Steelers’ defense led the league in yards per play allowed at 4.5. They also led in 2008, when they won the Super Bowl, and this year’s team is significantly better on offense (5.6 YPP and 23.6 PPG this year vs. 4.9 and 21.7 in 2008).
  • Roddy White’s 115 catches ties him for 10th all-time. There’s been at least one 100-catch receiver every year since Jerry Rice started the trend in 1990; the only time it didn’t happen was when Miami’s O.J. McDuffie led the league with 90 in 1998.
  • The Ravens played in 13 games decided by 10 points or fewer, the most of any team.
  • Green Bay scored 22 more touchdowns than their opponents did in 2010; they outgained their opponent in seven of the last eight weeks (vs. a strong schedule); Brandon Jackson had more than 20 touches in a game only once, but managed to go over 1,000 yards from scrimmage (1,045).
  • New Orleans finished the season 11th in scoring at 24.0 PPG – way off the 31.9 PPG of 2009. In fact, they topped 31.9 points in a game only three times this season.

NFL coach may continue playoff word ban, even with postseason birth

Coach Todd Haley banned the players from publicly talking about the playoffs last week as they neared the division championship, Kansas City’s first since 2003. The Chiefs made the playoffs as a wild-card entrant in 2006. Haley wouldn’t say whether he would lift the ban this week. “We’re in (the playoffs) now, but our focus isn’t going to change,” he said. “That’s all part of the focus of staying in the present tense and understanding the task at hand. We’ve got a big task this week. “It’s silly because we’re in, but I heard some of the guys were staying with it, so maybe we’ll see where everybody stands with it.” — KC Star

NFL’s all-time leader in single-season yards per rush

The NFL’s best back ever by one key measure doesn’t even get the most carries on his own team. Kansas City’s Jamaal Charles is currently the all-time leader in single-season yards per rush for players with at least 200 rushes, averaging 6.42 yards on his 203 carries this season. Yet Thomas Jones leads the Chiefs in rushing attempts with 212 (for 828 yards, a relatively paltry 3.9 yards per pop). — Wall Street Journal

  • Titans QB Kerry Collins (39,906) needs 94 passing yards to become 12th QB in NFL history w/ 40,000 career.
  • Chiefs QB Matt Cassel has 10 TDs vs. 1 INT & 99.3 rating at home in ’10
  • Texans RB Arian Foster (1,345) aims to become 2nd undrafted player since 1967 to lead NFL in rushing yards (Priest Holmes – 1,555 w/ KC in ’01).  Leads NFL w/ 13 rush TDs & needs rush TD to surpass Domanick Williams (13 in ’04) for most in season in club history.  Foster (1,895) needs 105 yards to become 1st player in franchise history w/ 2,000 scrimmage yards.
  • Chargers QB Philip Rivers is 10-0 as starter on road in Dec. w/ 19 TDs vs. 5 INTs & 99.3 rating.
  • Falcons QB Matt Ryan is 19-1 (.950) at home as starter.  Aims for 16th consecutive home win.  Has posted 100+ rating 15 times & Falcons are 15-0.

Colts have NFL’s best offensive line

The New York Life Protection Index was created by sports information leader STATS to provide a composite gauge for this undervalued component of the game. While the New York Life Protection Index is calculated using a proprietary formula, the fundamentals are comprised of the length of a team’s pass attempts combined with penalties by offensive linemen, sacks allowed and quarterback hurries and knockdowns. The New York Life Protection Index is updated weekly throughout the regular season. — Stats Inc.

NFL playoff contenders QB knocked out TWO weeks with appendectomy

Chiefs quarterback Matt Cassel missed today’s practice because of an appendectomy, the Chiefs said today. If that’s the case, the Chiefs are looking at a best-case scenario of losing Cassel for at least two weeks, this Sunday’s game at San Diego and the following week at St. Louis. The Chiefs announced Cassel’s procedure was successful and said they expect Cassel to return to work this week. The word “work” has many connotations, and in this case, it probably means attending meetings, watching tape with backup Brodie Croyle and trying to get him up to speed in preparing for the Chargers game. — KC Star

Chiefs lineman in trouble for shoving coach

Chiefs coach Todd Haley refused to disclose what, if any, punishment that will be given to offensive lineman Barry Richardson for his actions during Sunday’s game against the Broncos. But he did appear to indicate Richardson will face some kind of penalty when he indicated he didn’t have all of the necessary information by the time the game ended.
”I was unaware of the complete situation yesterday,” Haley said today at his news conference. Richardson, you’ll recall, was removed from the game after he was penalized for a false start with the Chiefs inside the Denver 20. Once on the sideline, he got into a shouting match with offensive line coach Bill Muir. He later shoved special teams coach Steve Hoffman. — KC Star

Chiefs Cassel to Bowe one of NFL’s most potent combos

Chiefs QB Matt Cassel and WR Dwayne Bowe have been at their best in November. During the month, only Colts tight end Jacob Tamme, with 38 receptions, had more than Bowe’s 37, while Bowe led the NFL in receiving yards with 528 and receiving touchdowns with eight. Cassel threw an NFL-most 12 touchdown passes in November and just one interception, while only Green Bay’s Aaron Rodgers (130.2) and New England’s Tom Brady (121.7) compiled better passer ratings than Cassel (111.2). — KC Star

Browns Peyton Hillis joins Rams legend in NFL record book

·        Atlanta quarterback Matt Ryan led the Falcons to a 20-17 win over Green Bay.  With the victory, Ryan improved to 19-1 (.950) in his career as the starter at home, tying Danny White for the best winning percentage in a player’s first 20 starts at home among QBs who began their careers in the Super Bowl era (since 1966). Ryan completed 24 of 28 passes for an 85.7 completion percentage, the 11th time in NFL history in which a quarterback posted a completion percentage of at least 85.7 with 28 or more attempts in a game.

·        Cleveland running back Peyton Hillis rushed for 131 yards with three touchdowns and added six receptions for 63 yards in the Browns’ 24-23 victory over Carolina. Hillis joins Marshall Faulk (September 17, 2000) as the only players in NFL history to record at least 130 rushing yards, three rushing touchdowns, six receptions and 60 receiving yards in a single game.  Hillis has 11 rushing touchdowns this year and joins Pro Football Hall of Famer Jim Brown and Leroy Kelly as the only Browns to rush for at least 11 touchdowns in a season.

·        Houston wide receiver Andre Johnson had nine receptions in the Texans’ 20-0 win over Tennessee. Johnson has 65 catches this year and is the first player in NFL history to record at least 60 receptions in each of his first eight seasons.

·        Chicago quarterback Jay Cutler threw four touchdown passes in the Bears’ 31-26 victory over Philadelphia, his third game as a Bear with four TD passes.  Cutler joins Pro Football Hall of Famer Sid Luckman (four times) and Billy Wade (three) as the only Bears to throw four or more touchdowns in a game at least three times.

·        Kansas City wide receiver Dwayne Bowe had 13 catches for 170 yards and three touchdowns in the Chiefs’ 42-24 win at Seattle. Bowe joins Pro Football Hall of Famer Jerry Rice (October 14, 1990 and December 18, 1995) and Jimmy Smith (September 10, 2000) as the only players since 1990 to record at least 13 catches, 170 receiving yards and three touchdown receptions in a game.

·        New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning played in his 100th career game and completed 14 of 24 passes for 226 yards with two touchdowns in the Giants’ 24-20 win over Jacksonville. Manning holds franchise records for the most completions (1,838), attempts (3,169), passing yards (21,465) and passing touchdowns (148) in a player’s first 100 games as a Giant.

·        Cleveland rookie cornerback Joe Haden had an interception in the Browns’ win over Carolina, marking the third consecutive game he has recorded an interception.  He is the first Browns player with an interception in three consecutive games in his first NFL season since Bernie Parrish in 1959.

NFL finds parity with no salary cap

Increasing player payroll appears to have limited correlation to team success.  In this year of parity so far, there is little to take away in terms of hard line rules to guide us, but let’s take a look: Of the low-spending teams, some are doing well (Buccaneers, Chiefs, Titans), some middling (Jaguars, Chargers) and some poorly (Bills, Panthers, Broncos).  Many of these teams have used the uncapped year to take advantage of the lack of a floor for spending, using 2010 as a year to bring debt under control and gird for the next system, whenever that may be.  A few of these teams are spending as little as $85 million when the previous Cap floor was $109 million. Of the higher-spending teams, some are doing well (Raiders), some middling (Bears, Vikings, Redskins, Dolphins) and some poorly (Cowboys, 49ers). — Forbes

Chiefs pinching pennies with Tamba Hali?

With linebacker Derrick Johnson now signed for the long term, all but one of the Chiefs’ best young defensive players are under contract through at least 2011. The exception is linebacker Tamba Hali, who is in the final year of the contract he signed as a rookie in 2006. Unlike with Johnson, the Chiefs have made no apparent progress in signing Hali to a contract extension. “Tamba has stated to me on numerous occasions that he’d like to retire a Kansas City Chief,” said Brian Mackler, Hali’s agent. “I had discussions with the Chiefs at the beginning of the season, and we both agreed we’d wait to see how the season progressed for the Chiefs and for Tamba. The ball is in their court.” A failure to re-sign Hali would threaten the good thing the Chiefs appear to be building on defense. Nine of their 11 defensive starters are 27 or younger, and the key players in that group are signed beyond this season. — KC Star

NFL has most balance since 1981

For the first time since 1981, no NFL team has fewer than two losses midway thought the season. Las Vegas Sports Consultants provides wagering lines to Las Vegas sports books, and the odds to win Super Bowl XLV have more teams than usual at low odds. Here they are: Steelers the 6-to-1 favorite; Giants, Jets, Patriots and Ravens each 7-to-1; Colts, Packers and Saints each 8-to-1; Falcons 9-to-1; Eagles 18-to-1; Vikings 25-to-1; Chiefs 30-to-1; Bears, Chargers and Titans each 35-to-1 (very tempting); Dolphins, Redskins and Texans each 50-to-1; Buccaneers, 49ers, Rams and Seahawks each 60-to-1; Raiders 75-to-1; Cardinals 150-to-1; Bengals, Jaguars and Lions each 250-to-1; Broncos and Browns each 500-to-1; Cowboys 1,000-to-1; Panthers 3,000-to-1; and Bills 5,000-to-1. — Rochester Democrat & Chronicle

Chiefs Matt Cassel taking good care of the ball

Matt Cassel, who hasn’t been intercepted since the Chiefs played the 49ers in September, has a streak of 119 consecutive passes without a pick. “Part of my job is taking care of the football,” said Cassel, who also threw two interceptions in the September victory over Cleveland. “Up to this point so far, I’ve been able to do a good job of that, and hopefully that will continue. You don’t really think about that. As long as I’m doing my job and taking care of the football, I think I’m putting our team in a good spot to win ballgames.” Cassel’s active streak is the third longest in the league, behind Josh Freeman of Tampa Bay (132) and Michael Vick of Philadelphia (123). Vick’s streak dates to 2006 when he played for Atlanta. The league’s fourth-longest active streak belongs to the Chiefs’ Brodie Croyle, who hasn’t thrown an interception in his last 112 passes. Croyle hasn’t played in a game this season, and his streak dates to 2008. Cassel has a long way to go to break the Chiefs’ record of 233 consecutive passes without an interception, set by Steve DeBerg in 1990. — KC Star

Chiefs & Raiders fall back to running game

The success of the Chiefs and Raiders this season could have implications beyond the AFC West, too. Simply put, their offenses, which revolve around the run, spit in the face of the game’s evolution. Over the past 30 years, the NFL has gone from a predominantly running game to one ruled by passing. In 1978, 44% of plays were passes, according to Stats Inc. Since 1989, that number hasn’t dipped below 54%; last season, it was 57%. So far this year, the Chiefs have run the ball 59% of the time, which would have been a high percentage in the 1970s. The results have been remarkable. Veteran back Thomas Jones, who was brought in during the offseason after a strong year with the New York Jets, and third-year back Jamaal Charles have combined for more than 1,200 yards. Mr. Charles averages 6.5 yards a carry, and as a team, Kansas City gets 5.2 yards a carry, a yard above the league average. The Raiders, meanwhile, run on 53% of their plays and gain 4.9 yards a carry. Mr. McFadden, a third-year back from Arkansas, has done the bulk of the damage, with 668 yards (5.5 per carry) and four touchdowns.

Chiefs Thomas Jones is NFL’s greatest journeyman RB

Kansas City running back Thomas Jones became the first player in NFL history to rush for 500 yards in a season with five different teams. It’s a testament to just how consistent Jones is no matter what system he get plugged into. He’s currently on track to get his sixth straight 1,000-yard season. The teams he’s been on include the Cardinals, Buccaneers, Bears, Jets and now the Chiefs. — Vegas Insider
