NFL could have TWO teams in Los Angeles soon

Philip Anschutz also secured a 30% ownership interest in the Lakers and can buy the team if the Buss family ever has to sell. The same deal probably will be made with the Chargers, with Casey Wasserman becoming the minority owner and the face of the team in L.A. Wasserman has already partnered with Leiweke, has previous experience working with the Goofs who own the Chargers, and has a close relationship with Goodell. L.A. lost two NFL teams 16 years ago, and might begin anew with two teams again, including the Rams. Stan Kroenke owns the Rams, as well as Denver’s basketball and hockey teams. He will have to sell his Denver interests unless he becomes owner of the Broncos. Broncos owner Pat Bowlen is having health issues. Someone has suggested it makes sense for Kroenke to exchange franchises with Bowlen, taking ownership of the Broncos and allowing Bowlen to move the Rams to L.A.LA Times

Browns player tops list of rising sports stars

Cleveland Browns linebacker, David Bowens, tops the list of Rising Sports Stars to watch in the month of November. The list identifies sports stars with the greatest leap in popularity over the prior 30 days. A meteoric rise may indicate a standout on-the-field performance, off-the-field achievement, or emergence from utility player to celebrity.

  1. Cleveland Browns linebacker, David Bowens, was named top AFC defensive player for Week 7 after returning two interceptions for touchdowns in an upset win at New Orleans.  This is the first time the 12-year veteran has been named a top player of the week, and is only the third linebacker since 1970 with two interception return touchdowns in a single game.
  2. Green Bay Packers linebacker, Desmond Bishop, has been given his chance as a starter ever since linebacker Nick Barnett’s season-ending wrist injury.  In only three games, he’s proven his value with 31 tackles, 3 pass defenses, and 1 interception returned for a touchdown.
  3. PGA Tour’s Jonathan Byrd made history by becoming the first golfer to win a PGA Tour title with a hole-in-one.  The American aced the par-three on the fourth hole of a three-man playoff at the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open.
  4. LA Lakers point guard, Steve Blake, injected some fire into his team beginning in the final minutes of the Lakers’ home opening game against the Houston Rockets.  His performance helped the Lakers in their come-from-behind win 112-110.
  5. San Diego Chargers linebacker, Antwan Applewhite, has had a strong performance ever since being named starting outside linebacker after Shawne Merriman’s calf injury.

Chargers Philip Rivers off to greatest start in NFL history

Philip Rivers is throwing passes to guys he didn’t even know a few months ago and doing it at a record-breaking pace. With his fifth 300-yard game of the season in Sunday’s 33-25 victory over the Tennessee Titans, Rivers has thrown for 2,649 yards, most in NFL history through a season’s first eight games. The biggest factor, however, doesn’t sit well with him. “We’ve been behind in games,” he said. “I certainly would trade it for a lot more wins.” Still, it is perhaps most remarkable because has completed passes to 14 different receivers, six of whom he’d never thrown to before this season, including three who had never caught an NFL pass two games ago. With Malcom Floyd and Legedu Naanee still sidelined by hamstring strains and Buster Davis missing his first game due to a rib injury, the wide receivers Rivers had available to him Sunday had a combined 21 receptions as Chargers. “There are guys that are gaining valuable experience,” said Rivers, who bettered Dan Fouts’ 2,580 yards through eight games in the strike-shortened 1982 season. – San Diego Union-Tribune

Vincent Jackson joining Chargers today

Vincent Jackson is expected to report to Chargers Park today, though he is not expected to speak publicly. He can practice with the team while he serves his time on the Roster Exempt List but will not be eligible to play until Nov. 28 at Indianapolis. Said Turner: “I’m anxious to see Vincent … But myself and everyone who is going to play Sunday are zeroed in on this football game, and we will deal with … how we plan on getting Vincent ready starting on Monday.” — San Diego Union-Tribune

Ryan Leaf to co-host San Diego radio show (for a day)

Ryan Leaf will guest host on San Diego’s 1090am Sports Radio station in the 8am hour on Thursday morning. T.J. Simers, the LA Times columnist, is hosting the show for the day, after winning a bet on the Padres missing the playoffs. Leaf was 4-14 in 18 starts for the Chargers from 1998-2000. — LA Times

NFL’s best worst team in history

The San Diego Chargers are so good this season that it’s amazing they’re so bad. As of Week 6, the Chargers lead the NFL in offense, gaining 432.7 yards a game, and in defense, allowing just 255.2 yards a game. And yet the Chargers are 2-4 and tied for last place in the AFC West. Since the 1970 AFL-NFL merger, only eight other teams led the league in both offense and defense during any week of any season. And until the Chargers managed to pull it off this week, no team ever had a losing record while leading the league in offense and defense. Even if the Chargers won their next 10 games, their 12-4 final record would be subpar by the standards of teams that have led the league in both offense and defense, a list populated by the likes of the 14-0 Dolphins of 1972 and the 16-0 Patriots of 2007. — Wall Street Journal

49ers DC wants Chargers Shawne Merriman to join

San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator Greg Manusky, who coached Shawne Merriman during the peak of his career, did nothing to play down the possibility of a reunion with the Chargers’ outside linebacker. “His attitude, his intensity and his desire as a football player were outstanding when I had him,” Manusky said Thursday. “I loved everything about the kid.” Manusky was San Diego’s linebackers coach in 2005-06, when Merriman burst into the NFL with 27 sacks in his first two seasons. Merriman did so despite missing four games in ’06 for violating the NFL’s policy on performance-enhancing drugs. — North County Times

Chargers star wants ball more

Chargers RB Darren Sproles, who is making $7.2 million this season, would like the ball more. He is on pace for just 90 touches, 48 fewer than last season. But he is also working on accepting his role and taking his touches as they come. “I was trying to do too much,” Sproles said. “I’ve learned just now to relax.” — San Diego Union-Tribune

49ers could add Chargers star?

Adam Schefter of ESPN reported Sunday that the 49ers are likely to put a claim on Shawne Merriman when the San Diego Chargers waive the three-time Pro Bowler at outside linebacker. The Chargers put Merriman on the injured reserve list Wednesday with a calf-injury and a “minor injury” designation. He will be released when he is healthy.
Once considered one of the best defensive players in the game, Merriman had 39.5 sacks over his first three seasons starting in 2005, despite missing four games in 2006 for violating the NFL’s policy on performance-enhancing drugs. But he has had only four sacks in the three seasons since and developed a contentious relationship with Chargers general manager A.J. Smith. Merriman’s contract pays him $3,269,000 this season. ESPN’s report said that Merriman, who has battled calf and Achilles problems this year, could be healthy enough to play by the end of the month. — San Jose Mercury News

Source: Vincent Jackson ending holdout will rejoin Chargers soon

Vincent Jackson is coming back. The receiver will sign his free agent tender and report to the Chargers in the week leading up to the Oct. 31 game against Tennessee, according to a source who spoke on the condition on anonymity. His agent, Neil Schwartz, declined to comment Thursday. Jackson will report to ensure he serves a three-game roster-exempt suspension, earns an accrued season by being eligible for the final six games and makes it a virtual certainty that he becomes an unrestricted free agent at season’s end. Jackson previously stated he would sit out the entire season rather than play for a one-year contract tender offered by the Chargers, but he’s going back on that. Labor uncertainty has prompted an about face, bringing fear that a new agreement, or an extension of the old one, would allow the Chargers to retain Jackson’s rights and designate him as a restricted free agent in 2011. — North County Times

Chargers Shawne Merriman had ZERO interest on trade market

From what we hear, Chargers GM A.J. Smith was trying hard not to lose Shawne Merriman while getting nothing in return. Smith had been working the phones to get a trade in place prior to the league’s Oct. 19 trading deadline, but the fact that the sixth-year linebacker was hurt made him a very difficult commodity to move. Smith also had the option to hold on to Merriman for now and let him depart as a free agent in the offseason, a maneuver which could have netted San Diego a compensatory draft pick. However, with LBs Donald Butler, James Holt and Jyles Tucker all on I.R., the team couldn’t afford to waste a roster spot on an injured Merriman and ultimately had to cut him loose. — Pro Football Weekly

Report: Players association urges Vincent Jackson to rejoin Chargers

Receiver Vincent Jackson will join the Chargers late this month at the urging and recommendation of the NFL Players Association, according to an espn.com report Wednesday night. Jackson will do so to earn an accrued season and ensure that he’ll be an unrestricted free agent in 2011, the report stated, citing sources it did not identify. To gain a season of service, a player must be available for six games. If Jackson follows the union’s recommendation, he’ll report by Oct. 31 to serve a three-game suspension as a member of the roster-exempt list and be eligible to play Nov. 28 at Indianapolis. Jackson would earn a prorated portion of the $600,000 tender currently being offered by the Chargers and play the final six games of the regular season. Jackson and his agents have repeatedly said that he’s willing to sit out the season, but that might change because of the union’s involvement and possible punishments and complications in the collective bargaining agreement currently being debated. — North County Times

McNeill’s deal with Chargers considered imminent

Technically, left tackle Marcus McNeill is still on a one-year contract rather than having agreed to terms on an extension. Sources familiar with the talks said that when the initial report came out Monday night that McNeill had agreed to a five-year extension, there remained multiple sticking points between the sides. The Chargers and McNeill’s agent talked Tuesday, and a deal is roundly considered imminent. A long-term deal for McNeill was expected and pretty much promised from the moment he reported back to the team on Sept. 25 after his spring and summer holdout.

Chargers won’t lower price for WR Vincent Jackson

The Chargers are not expecting their remaining disgruntled player, receiver Vincent Jackson, to report this season. The NFL trade deadline is a week from today, but the Chargers are sticking to a high asking price from other teams. The Chargers have said they will not offer Jackson a higher tender. And Jackson has said he will not play for the Chargers for their offer, which would amount to slightly more than $240,000 if Jackson signed before Sunday. – San Diego Union-Tribune

Norv Turner supports incompetent Chargers special teams coach

Norv Turner thought it preposterous that special teams coach Steve Crosby could be on the hot seat, even after yet another disastrous showing in the kicking game. The Chargers had two punts blocked that resulted in a touchdown and a safety for Oakland, vital points in the Raiders’ 35-27 victory on Sunday. They also allowed a 46-yard punt return by Nick Miller and couldn’t get the return game going for the fifth straight game. Those were the latest in a series of special-teams disasters, which include giving up three returns for touchdowns in previous losses to Kansas City and Seattle. All told, special teams have directly cost the Chargers four touchdowns and a safety in five games. Despite such dismal results, the Chargers head coach threw his support behind Crosby when the assistant’s job security was called into question. “Don’t be silly,” Turner said. “We’re going to get the right guys on the punt team that are going to do the right job. We have an outstanding coaching staff, and I have the highest regard for what Steve Crosby does.” — North County Times

Cards Max Hall does something that hasn’t happend since 1976

·        Quarterbacks Philip Rivers (1,759) of the San Diego Chargers, Kyle Orton (1,733) of the Denver Broncos and Peyton Manning (1,609) of the Indianapolis Colts have each passed for over 1,600 yards in their team’s first five games in 2010.  Rivers, Orton and Manning give the 2010 season three quarterbacks with at least 1,600 passing yards through their team’s first five games of a season, the first time in NFL history this has been accomplished.

·        Detroit kick returner Stefan Logan had a 105-yard kickoff-return touchdown in the Lions’ 44-6 win over St. Louis, tied for the sixth-longest kickoff return touchdown in NFL history.  Ellis Hobbs (New England, September 9, 2007) holds the league record with a 108-yard return.

The 2010 season is the first since 1970 with at least one kickoff-return touchdown in each of the first five weeks.

·        Chicago running back Matt Forté rushed for 166 yards and two touchdowns in the Bears’ 23-6 win at Carolina.  Forté, who had an 89-yard touchdown catch in Week 1, had a 68-yard touchdown run against the Panthers and is the fifth player since 1970 to record an 85+ yard touchdown catch and 65+ yard touchdown run in the same season.  The last player to accomplish the feat was Warrick Dunn in 2003 with Atlanta.

·        Arizona quarterback Max Hall led the Cardinals to a 30-20 victory over New Orleans in his first career start.  Hall is the first undrafted rookie quarterback to start in Week 5 or earlier since 1976 (excluding the 1987 season), when Jim Zorn started the first game for Seattle in the Seahawks’ inaugural season as an NFL franchise.

·        San Diego tight end Antonio Gates had a touchdown reception in the Chargers’ 35-27 loss at Oakland.  Gates has a touchdown reception in nine consecutive games, the longest streak in NFL history by a tight end and tied for the longest streak in franchise history by any player (Pro Football Hall of Famer Lance Alworth).  Only five players in NFL history have recorded a longer streak, led by Pro Football Hall of Famer Jerry Rice (13 games). Gates, who has a touchdown catch in each of the team’s first five games this year, joins Wesley Walls (Carolina, 1999) as the only tight ends in NFL history with a TD reception in each of the team’s first five games of a season.

·        Arizona safety Kerry Rhodes had a 27-yard fumble-return touchdown in the Cardinals’ win.  Rhodes, who had a 42-yard fumble-return touchdown last week at San Diego, is the first player since Marcus Robertson in 1997 to record a 25+ yard opponents’ fumble-return touchdown in back-to-back games.

·        New York Giants wide receiver Hakeem Nicks had 12 catches for 130 yards and two touchdowns in the Giants’ 34-10 win at Houston.  Nicks joins Amani Toomer (September 17, 2006) as the only players in franchise history to record 12 catches, 130 yards and two touchdowns in a single game.

Chargers sticking with Nate Kaeding on kickoffs

Nate Kaeding has just one touchback in 22 kickoffs this season, tied with the New York Jets’ Nick Folk for the lowest touchback percentage (4.5) in the NFL. Kaeding’s 61.5-yard average is also lowest in the league among those with more than 14 kickoffs. Since 2004, Kaeding’s rookie season, the Chargers’ kick coverage team has ranked 14th in kickoff return average allowed. This while Kaeding has had just 41 touchbacks in his 551 kickoffs, fifth-worst in the NFL (among those with 400 kickoffs) in at least the past 20 seasons. “I’m not a home run hitter,” Kaeding said yesterday, as he has many times. He’s good enough. And he has to be for the foreseeable future, as the Chargers don’t believe they cn afford a roster spot for a kickoff specialist and are not going to jettison the most accurate regular-season field goal kicker in history. – San Diego Union-Tribune

Chargers Shawne Merriman to be traded or released?

Shawne Merriman is not on solid footing with the Chargers. He remains on the trading block, as he has been for more than a year, and could be moved before the Oct. 19 trading deadline. But there has been little activity on that front. And, thing is, an injured player is not going to be traded. An injured player, however, can be cut. Even if Merriman is not traded, that is no guarantee he will remain with the Chargers until the end of the season. Three seasons removed from his third straight Pro Bowl, having created more news off the field than on it of late, it is a very real possibility that Merriman will be released before January. — San Diego Union-Tribune

NFL believes Chargers game on TV illegally

Even after sending warning letters to approximately 90 San Diego-area restaurants and bars last week, the NFL believes some establishments illegally showed the blacked-out telecast of Sunday’s Chargers-Cardinals game. “We did receive reports” the game was on in certain places, said NFL spokesman Dan Masonson, declining to state how many reports. “We will review (the) reports.” Masonson said the letter sent by the NFL was a “reminder” about unauthorized use of NFL copyrights under the U.S. Copyright Act. The letter states that the NFL recently became aware “many establishments are considering showing to their patrons, unauthorized Internet streams or unauthorized intercepted feeds of NFL Sunday Ticket featuring the Chargers Game Telecast. This unauthorized public performance of copyrighted Game Telecasts constitutes infringement under the Copyright Act and is a clear violation of the NFL’s rights.” According to the letter, the “Copyright Act authorizes the award of damages of up to $150,000 for each Game Telecast infringed, plus temporary and permanent injunctive relief, court costs, and attorneys’ fees.” — San Diego Union-Tribune

Smokin’ Joe’s favorite NFL team

Former heavyweight boxing champion Joe Frazier was on the field before the game, mugging for the cameras and shadow boxing in a Hawaiian shirt with a Chargers print. After the game, Frazier, 66, briefly visited the Chargers locker room in a wheelchair. On the video board during the game, Frazier said, “I’m a Chargers fan. … Let’s get the job done.” San Diego Union-Tribune

Charger Guy is unemployed information worker

He calls himself The Charger Guy, even has a website with that address. Fans who take Ruffin Road to Qualcomm Stadium on Sundays can’t miss him. Tom Wright has been showing his Chargers pride on the street outside his Serra Mesa condo for seven years. His blue Jeep Liberty is plastered with Chargers logos, he flies 10 large Bolts flags and bunch of smaller ones, and there is a life-sized blowup Chargers character on his lawn. With his goatee painted blue, Wright, 52, on Sunday waved a large flag and pointed at people driving by, who returned the mojo with honks and cheers out their windows. “It gets the players and fans fired up,” Wright said. “By the time they get down there, they’ve got a little kick in their pants.” Wright is an unemployed information technology worker who said he can’t afford to go to games and has only attended a handful in the last 10 years. Chargers head coach Norv Turner did give him four tickets to last year’s playoff game against the Jets – and they lost. “I think Norv could hear me yelling at him,” Wright said with a smile. Wright said he hasn’t taken too much abuse from opposing fans, other than a moron from Denver who threw at and hit him with an open can of beer. “A cop saw it and they arrested him for DUI,” Wright said. — San Diego Union-Tribune

300-yard passing QB’s have .313 winning % this season

Gaudy passing numbers have had no correlation to winning so far this season. Teams are 5-11 when their quarterback throws for 300-plus yards. That includes a 3-4 record for Denver, Indianapolis, San Diego and Dallas. — Dallas Morning News

Pats Randy Moss reaches Jerry Rice level

•    Baltimore wide receiver Anquan Boldin had eight catches for 142 yards and three touchdowns in the Ravens’ 24-17 victory over the Cleveland Browns.  Boldin now has 606 receptions in 98 games, reaching 600 career receptions in the fewest games in NFL history.

•    New England wide receiver Randy Moss had two touchdown catches in the Patriots’ 38-30 win over the Buffalo Bills.  Moss now has 151 career touchdown receptions and joins Pro Football Hall of Famer Jerry Rice (197) as the only players in NFL history with at least 150 TD catches. Moss now has 14,604 career receiving yards, surpassing Marvin Harrison (14,580) for the fifth-most receiving yards in NFL history.

·        Seattle’s Leon Washington had kickoff-return touchdowns of 101 and 99 yards in the Seahawks’ 27-20 win over the San Diego Chargers.  Washington is the 10th player in NFL history with two kickoff-return touchdowns in a game.

·        New England quarterback Tom Brady has now won 22 consecutive regular-season starts at home, tying Pro Football Hall of Famer John Elway (1996-1998) for the second-most consecutive home wins as a starting quarterback since 1970.  Brett Favre has the longest such streak since 1970 with 25 consecutive home wins with the Green Bay Packers (1995-1998).

•    San Diego tight end Antonio Gates had one touchdown reception in the Chargers’ 27-20 loss to the Seattle Seahawks.  Gates, who has 63 career touchdown catches, passed Shannon Sharpe (62) for the second-most TD receptions in NFL history by a tight end.

·        The Dallas Cowboys, who defeated the Houston Texans 27-13, won their 400th game (including postseason) since the 1970 AFL-NFL merger.  The Cowboys join the Pittsburgh Steelers (406) as the only teams since 1970 with 400 total victories.

·        The Atlanta Falcons defeated the New Orleans Saints 27-24 in overtime, marking the third consecutive week with an overtime game to start the season.  The last time an NFL season had at least one overtime game in each of the first three weeks was 2002.

Sources: Rams pass on Chargers WR Vincent Jackson

Whatever interest the Rams may have had in Vincent Jackson has passed. League sources told the Post-Dispatch on Tuesday evening that the team is not pursuing Jackson, the San Diego wide receiver. Expending lots of money, plus draft picks, for a player with past DUI issues didn’t make sense to the team. Jackson must sit out four more games before he’s eligible to play in 2010 unless a team trades for him by this afternoon’s deadline, which would cut the suspension to just two more games. — St. Louis Post-Dispatch

Ryan Mathews expects to play for Chargers

Tests on Ryan Mathews’ right ankle were negative and indications are that the rookie running back will play Sunday at Seattle. Mathews wore a protective boot and was said to be “sore” a day after leaving the game in the first quarter. Mathews had five carries for 26 yards and two receptions for 29 yards before leaving. Said head coach Norv Turner: “He was off to a great start … of what was going to be a very big day.” — San Diego Union-Tribune

Chargers Vincent Jackson to Vikings?

The possibility of the Vikings trading for Pro Bowl wide receiver Vincent Jackson became more intriguing Thursday after the NFL and the players’ union agreed that the San Diego Chargers holdout can play after sitting out four games if traded by Wednesday. Because of a bye week, the Vikings’ fifth game would be Oct. 17 against the Dallas Cowboys at the Metrodome. Thursday’s agreement makes Jackson easier to trade, and his career in San Diego appears finished. With Sidney Rice expected to miss at least half the season after hip surgery, the Vikings have been in need of an impact wideout. The issue for the Chargers seems to be whether to trade Jackson now or after the season. Trading for Jackson could cost the Vikings a third-round draft pick, ESPN points out, because the Chargers in turn would receive a third-round 2012 compensatory pick if Jackson were to sit out the entire season. – Pioneer Press
