Cavs have turned to witchcraft in past?

The Cavaliers began the 1970 season by dropping the first 15 games. One more loss would have set an NBA record. Mike Rogers was the promotions director for radio station WERE AM. Pete Franklin was the station’s sports talk superstar at the time, and his callers were furious about the losing streak. Game 16 happened to fall on Nov. 13, a Friday. Rogers decided to exploit the Friday the 13th angle by Continue reading…

LeBron: Cavs/Wizards should be on national TV

LeBron James said he hasn’t talked to any of his former Cleveland teammates about their record-setting 25-game losing streak because that’s “a very sensitive subject,” and added he hopes they win soon. There’s one game he thinks the Cavs have a shot. “Something has to give in that game where they play the Wizards,” James said. “I think that should be a nationally televised game right there, honestly.”Miami Herald

Cavs looking to trade small forward?

At some point, the Cavs will probably trade Jamario Moon — who squandered a chance to start. He was Scott’s first pick at small forward, but Moon often disappeared on the floor. While Eyenga is giving the Cavs energy, Moon is averaging only 4.5 points and shooting 37 percent in 19 minutes. — Cleveland Plain Dealer

LeBron James costs Cavs 26% of franchise value

No player in the 64-year history of the National Basketball Association has come close to having the immediate and profound impact that LeBron James had when he bolted the Cleveland Cavaliers for the Miami Heat this summer. The King’s move accounted for both the biggest gain and drop in team values: the Heat’s worth increased 17%, to $425 million (seventh among the NBA’s 30 teams), and the Cavaliers plummeted 26%, to $355 million (15th). — Forbes

Cavs Byron Scott gets sympathetic texts, phone calls

With his team poised to break the franchise record for consecutive road losses (21) and on the verge of the franchise mark for consecutive losses in a season (19), Cavs coach Byron Scott has gotten quite a few calls of a similar nature. “They tell me to hang in there,” Scott said. “If they don’t call, they text. I text them back and tell them, ‘Don’t worry. I’m going to do that.’ “I’ve always been a very positive person. It’s nothing new to me. I have been through this before, so I think that makes it a little bit easier for me to deal with. It doesn’t make it easier when you’re losing, period. But being through it before, I do know it makes it easier to deal with. If I hadn’t been through this, it would make it really, really hard for me to go through this right now.” Scott said he continues to be positive and never goes to practice with his head down. “I refuse to do that,” he said. “I come to practice every day that we’ve got another chance, another to get better as a basketball team. We’ve got another chance to win a basketball game. That’s how I look at it.” — Cleveland Plain Dealer

NBA coach upset his players still don’t know playbook

Cavs players got a tongue lashing from their coach at practice Thursday for still not knowing the plays. Phil Jackson didn’t want Byron Scott coaching Lakers?

Some people believe Phil Jackson stayed one more year because he didn’t want Byron Scott to get his job, that he wants assistant Brian Shaw to succeed him. You have to wonder if Jackson dislikes Scott, because he had all five starters in the game until the 4:40 mark of the third quarter, when the Lakers led, 79-31. That’s when Lamar Odom replaced Pau Gasol. — OC Register

Lakers legend misses the Forum

It has been almost 14 years since Byron Scott hung up his purple-and-gold Lakers uniform for the last time. Having grown up in the shadow of the Forum, having starred at nearby Morningside High School, it was a difficult decision. But he knew it was time. He has been back, of course, as coach of the New Jersey Nets and the New Orleans Hornets, but the Lakers haven’t treated his teams very well. Scott is 4-9 in Los Angeles

Baylor big man could be NBA’s No. 1 pick?

The Cavs get the No. 1 pick, Cleveland might have the opportunity to take someone like:
Perry Jones: Jones is a 6-foot-11, 235-pound freshman at Baylor who is 19 years old and projected to be a small forward in the NBA. His wing span is said to be 7 feet, 2 inches and he has perimeter skills, including the ability to handle the ball, shoot the three and get to the rim. That’s the scouting report, anyway. In reality, Jones is averaging 12.4 points, 7.4 rebounds, 1.4 assists and shooting .125 from beyond the arc (1-for-8). — Chronicle Telegram

Cavs dealing Antawn Jamison?

Cavs forward Antawn Jamison could be one player who is dealt. There are only a few teams that would be interested in acquiring him — a contender looking for a stretch “4″ that isn’t scared off by his contract. Jamison is making $13.6 million this season and is due $15.1 million next year. Jamison, 34, said he’s made no trade demands. Sources around the league think it’s only a matter of time before the Cavs start shopping his services. — News-Herald

President Obama expected LeBron to get heckled

Cavs fans supply laughs at LeBron

The Cleveland Cavs crowd supplied mostly laughs with its signs and chants. There was “Akron hates you” a few times when LeBron James had a the ball. There were some clever signs such as Merry Quitness and Traitor James. One of my favorites was WWMJD: What Would Michael Jordan Do? … Perhaps the loudest cheer went to Dan Gilbert, when the Cavs owner briefly appeared on the scoreboard. The boos thundered for James when he was introduced. — Cleveland Plain Dealer

Cavs expect big things from Anderson Varejao

The Cavs are hoping for big things from him this season. Because of the key decision-making position the center plays in Byron Scott’s Princeton offense, Anderson Varejao has a chance to have a career-best season — on the heels of his career-best season last year. That came the season after the Cavs signed him to a six-year, $48.2 million contract in the summer of 2009. Currently averaging 8.0 points and 9.5 rebounds for the 1-2 Cavs, it’s entirely likely he’ll average a double-double as he and the team get more familiar with Scott’s offense. That’s similar to the role he had on the Brazilian national team last summer. “The offense is a lot different,” he said. “I’m trying to be ready because I’m going to have the ball in my hands more to make the plays. All I’m doing is working hard and trying to be ready for all the chances I’m getting. “It’s just the beginning. Let’s see how things are going to work out this season.” — Cleveland Plain Dealer

Legendary NBA broadcaster facing heart surgery

Joe Tait calls it “The Grand Opening.” The Hall of Fame broadcaster means the open heart surgery that he will soon endure at Cleveland Clinic. “They are going to replace the aortic valve and do a double bypass,” said Tait. “It’s supposed to take at least four hours.” As I write this, Tait is at the Cleveland Clinic. Sunday, he felt dizzy and ill. He was taken to Cleveland Clinic for tests, which revealed a blood clot in his lungs. Doctors are discussing what to do about his heart surgery, originally set for later this week. Family members and the Cavaliers say Tait is “resting comfortably.” On Saturday, Tait invited me to his Lafayette Township home to watch the Cavs-Sacramento game from his living room. As he sat in his reclining chair with his wife Jean nearby, he wanted me to tell fans that he’s “overwhelmed” by the all the letters, cards and well wishes. “I don’t do email and I don’t do computers,” he said. “I mentioned to someone that no one writes letters any more — and ever since then, they’ve been pouring in.” Now 73, Tait was planning for this to be his last season. He wasn’t counting on missing any games. “Then I got pneumonia when we were in Houston,” he said. “Turns out, pneumonia saved my life. If I hadn’t gone to the hospital, they never would have found out that I had a heart problem.” … “Getting old ain’t fun,” said Tait, who then laughed. — Cleveland Plain Dealer

Cavs want to deal Antawn Jamison?

Because Antawn Jamison earns $13.4 million this season and $15 million next year, it will be very hard to trade him. The Cavs dealt for Jamison last season in a short-term move to compete for a title and hopefully keep LeBron James. It didn’t work. Jamison is a quality person and he also knows that if he must play well if he hopes to attract the attention of a contender. — Cleveland Plain Dealer

LeBron James banner replaced by 10-story banner of Cleveland’s skyline

One hundred and eight days after Nike’s giant “We Are All Witnesses” LeBron James banner was pulled from the side of Sherwin-Williams Co.’s world headquarters, a new 10-story banner of Cleveland’s nighttime skyline was unfurled to replace it. The 1.3-ton vinyl-mesh wall banner, featuring a black-and-white photograph of the downtown skyline, reads: “Our Home Since 1866: Our Pride Forever,” and bears Sherwin-Williams’ name and logo in the bottom right corner. Sherwin-Williams paid an undisclosed sum to Fusion Imaging of Kaysville, Utah, to make the 25,000-square-foot banner and have it shipped the 1,785 miles to Cleveland. The 110-feet by 201-feet banner was supposed to be installed by 7 p.m. Tuesday, before Wednesday’s home opener against the Boston Celtics, but was postponed by bad weather. A dozen workers suspended precariously on six swaying platforms spent seven hours fighting heavy showers and wind gusts of up to 50 mph on Tuesday as they hoisted the banner up the side of the Landmark Office Tower. By 3 p.m., they lashed it to the top of the building and called it a day. — Cleveland Plain Dealer

Cavs might not retire LeBron James No. 23

Cavs owner Dan Gilbert conveyed that he’s not sure if LeBron James will ever have his number retired in Cleveland, or if two-time MVP will ever return to play for the Cavaliers. Gilbert said it’s too soon to know what James’ legacy will be as an NBA star, and whether his No. 23 deserves to hang from the rafters alongside names such as Mark Price, Brad Daugherty and Austin Carr. Gilbert said retiring his number wouldn’t be discussed until James retires from the NBA. “A 25-year-old player?” Gilbert said. “I don’t know if any franchise or anybody can make that kind of judgment on somebody that young until their career’s over.” As for ever playing for Cleveland again, as James speculated he might like to in an off-season interview, Gilbert declined to comment, citing NBA tampering rules. — Cleveland Plain Dealer

Cavs dealing Anderson Varejao?

Sources say numerous teams have inquired about Anderson Varejao, but the Cavs won’t even entertain such talks unless they’re getting a superstar in return; Anthony, for one, has made it clear he wouldn’t sign an extension in Cleveland. Noah is off the list because his recently signed extension makes him a base-year player, meaning the salary used for trade-computing purposes would be too high to construct a practical deal under league rules.  — CBS Sports

NBA player making $13,358,905 won’t start

That means the 34-year-old Antawn Jamison, who is 5-of-26 from the field in the preseason and never really got a shot to compete for the starting small forward spot because of his knee issues, will come off the Cavs bench, a role he prospered in early in his career before set tling in as a starter. “He’ll be fine either way,” Byron Scott said when asked about Jamison. “He’s a professional.” — Chronicle-Telegram

Fun Fact: Jamison’s 2010-11 salary is $13,358,905
