Stanford’s Andrew Luck to be No.1 pick?

For weeks Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck has been the presumed No.1 pick. Given the Panthers’ struggles at quarterback this season and Luck’s billing as a once-in-a-decade prospect, draft experts say Carolina has to grab him if the third-year sophomore enters the draft. “I don’t care what you think about Jimmy Clausen, you’ve got to pick Luck at this stage of the game because he’s a franchise type quarterback,” said Mike Detillier, a Louisiana-based draft analyst. “And also look around at (the Panthers’) competition.”
With successful, young quarterbacks populating the NFC South, Detillier said the Panthers need Luck to compete with Drew Brees, Matt Ryan and Josh Freeman for the foreseeable future. But if Luck stays in school or the Panthers put their faith in Clausen and opt to trade down, Detillier said Carolina should use the No.1 pick on a pass-rushing beast to try to put the aforementioned quarterbacks on their backsides. — Rock Herald

Former Panthers WR Muhammad lands sports radio show

Former Carolina Panthers wide receiver Muhsin Muhammad has agreed to become the full-time co-host at WFNZ 610-AM as part of some wide-sweeping changes at Charlotte’s top local sports talk radio station, according to sources. Muhummad, the franchise’s all-time leader in receptions and receiving yards, will join former Panther Frank Garcia in the noon to 3 p.m. time slot, replacing Brentson Buckner as co-host. Buckner’s contract was set to expire at the end of the year and previously wrote on his Facebook page he was leaving the station. Muhammad played for the Panthers from 1996 to 2004 and then returned in 2008 to play two more years before retiring after last season. He was unavailable for comment. The station will also be making changes in the other time slots as well. In the 3-7 p.m. slot formerly occupied by Mark Packer, the station will debut a new co-host format featuring Taylor Zarzour and Marc James. — Gaston Gazette

Colts have NFL’s best offensive line

The New York Life Protection Index was created by sports information leader STATS to provide a composite gauge for this undervalued component of the game. While the New York Life Protection Index is calculated using a proprietary formula, the fundamentals are comprised of the length of a team’s pass attempts combined with penalties by offensive linemen, sacks allowed and quarterback hurries and knockdowns. The New York Life Protection Index is updated weekly throughout the regular season. — Stats Inc.

Jimmy Clausen wants to win so Panthers don’t draft QB

Carolina Panthers rookie quarterback Jimmy Clausen on Wednesday shrugged off the increasing talk about the possibility of Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck coming to Charlotte as the first pick if he enters the 2011 NFL draft. If he can coax a few wins out of the last month of the season, Clausen said he could effectively buy himself some job security. When asked if it was up to him to win enough games to keep the Panthers (1-11) from getting the top pick in the draft, Clausen grinned. — Charlotte Observer

Owner takes “full responsibility” for 1-11 Panthers

Carolina Panthers owner Jerry Richardson has spent the past several weeks calling disgruntled customers. Now, he’s found a more efficient method. Richardson sent a letter to all his PSL owners, more than 25,000 accounts who represent more than 60,000 of the seats in Bank of America Stadium. The letter explains the team’s motives last offseason, and Richardson took “full responsibility” for the Panthers’ 1-11 record, while explaining his intent to be “aggressive” in its pursuit of success. He also explains his reluctance to give interviews through the media, saying he didn’t want to be a distraction to the team during the season. He hasn’t taken questions from reporters since January 2009. — Charlotte Observer

John Fox days numbered as coach of Panthers

Panthers coach John Fox was asked about his future with the team he’s coached since 2002. “I’m under contract ’til Feb. 1, along with my whole staff and some players that are in the locker room that are in the last year of contracts,” Fox said Monday at his weekly press conference. “I would be purely winging it to try to predict the future. I just can tell you that you’ll get everything we’ve got until then.” The Panthers, who have the NFL’s worst record at 1-11, have two games remaining against NFC South leader Atlanta (10-2), as well as games against Arizona (3-9) and Pittsburgh (9-3). Panthers owner Jerry Richardson and general manager Marty Hurney have not commented publicly about Fox’s future. Fox said the question of whether he wanted to return to the Panthers is moot. “This is a business. There’s two sides to football – there’s football and then there’s business,” Fox said. “The business things you do in the offseason whether you’re a player, a coach, an assistant coach. I can say I’ve enjoyed every minute I’ve been here and appreciative of that opportunity.  — Charlotte Observer

Former Steelers great could coach Carolina?

The speculation that Arizona assistant head coach Russ Grimm could be at the top of owner Jerry Richardson’s list for the Panthers makes some sense. Grimm, a Hall of Famer, is deserving of an opportunity, plus his connection to Steelers owner Dan Rooney means a lot to Richardson.  — Fox Sports

Carolina Panthers could find “Luck” in NFL Draft

The Carolina Panthers have the worst record in the league, and one of the league’s toughest remaining schedules. That means like it or not, the focus the rest of this season will be on how wins and losses impact draft position next spring. And draft position means Andrew Luck. The Stanford quarterback is this year’s plum, the young passer franchises can build themselves around. Even though they used a second-round pick on Jimmy Clausen, who has provided positive results in his past two starts (both losses), the consensus in the scouting community is that Luck is a player you simply can’t pass on. One scout who has watched all of the redshirt sophomore’s games said that unlike every other quarterback of recent memory, he can’t figure out what the knock will be on Luck. Strong, tall, smart and tough, he seems to be the player most teams will target. “He’s just that good,” the scout said. — Charlotte Observer

NFL finds parity with no salary cap

Increasing player payroll appears to have limited correlation to team success.  In this year of parity so far, there is little to take away in terms of hard line rules to guide us, but let’s take a look: Of the low-spending teams, some are doing well (Buccaneers, Chiefs, Titans), some middling (Jaguars, Chargers) and some poorly (Bills, Panthers, Broncos).  Many of these teams have used the uncapped year to take advantage of the lack of a floor for spending, using 2010 as a year to bring debt under control and gird for the next system, whenever that may be.  A few of these teams are spending as little as $85 million when the previous Cap floor was $109 million. Of the higher-spending teams, some are doing well (Raiders), some middling (Bears, Vikings, Redskins, Dolphins) and some poorly (Cowboys, 49ers). — Forbes

NFL’s least shown team has been seen in just 2.9 states a week

The Dallas Cowboys and Minnesota Vikings have a combined 4-12 record and roughly zero chance to make the postseason. But lucky you, they’ve been on your television nearly every weekend this season.

A look at every NFL team shows the Vikings, on average, have been broadcast in a league-leading 38.3 states each week they play, edging the Cowboys by 0.4. The Indianapolis Colts, New York Giants and Philadelphia Eagles round out the top five, while the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are last at 2.9 states a week, according to The506.com, a website that uses local listings to track where teams are broadcast.

Former App State star who beat Michigan, 3rd string Panthers QB

Rookie conversion project Armanti Edwards will serve as the Panthers’ emergency quarterback Sunday at Tampa Bay. It’s his first pro chance to play his college position. Edwards said coach John Fox informed him of the plan after practice Wednesday, telling him to get ready just in case anything happens to starter Jimmy Clausen or backup Tony Pike. All three are rookies, which gives the whole thing a seat-of-the-pants vibe. But Edwards grinned when asked about the chance. “Play football,” Edwards said with a laugh when asked what he would prefer to do. “Any position I’m working at right now, hopefully I get a chance at it before the season’s over.” — Charlotte Observer

Panthers coach in trouble for ripping budget

A day after pointing the finger at the team’s “personnel department,” Panthers coach John Fox sounded a more conciliatory tone Monday. Fox’s comments Sunday when asked about quarterbacks were easy to connect to previous remarks that deflected the blame for the Panthers fortunes away from himself. From his “budget” comments on the Chris Harris trade to saying other decisions were made without him, Fox has tried to keep a tactful arm’s length from a roster not of his choosing. He said several times after the loss to New Orleans he wasn’t going to talk about personnel, and said Monday he and general manager Marty Hurney concurred that was for the best. — Charlotte Observer
