Carmelo Anthony could be traded to team he doesn’t want to play for long term

Carmelo Anthony expressed a sense of uncertainty about his future. Asked where he thought he’d be traded, he said: “At this point, I really don’t know. New Jersey took that deal off the table. Now it’s washed under the table.” It is possible that the Nets, who are moving to Brooklyn in 2012, could get back into the Melo sweepstakes. Its also possible a surprise team could end up

Pistons star could land with Mavs or Bulls?

Rip Hamilton hasn’t played in the last five games, being left out of the rotation by coach John Kuester. His shooting, along with his veteran experience, would be valuable for a team with needs at those spots, particularly Chicago and Dallas, for example. So far, the Pistons are not actively engaged in discussions with either team. Hamilton is owed $21 million guaranteed over the next two seasons, which has made it hard for the Pistons to find a willing taker. His falling production (13.2 points, 41 percent on field goals) makes the task more difficult. — Detroit News

Issue of Deng’s playing time won’t go away for Bulls

Bulls star Luol Deng ranks third behind Monta Ellis and Rudy Gay in average minutes played at 39.3. He has logged 40 or more minutes in 10 of the last 15 games. Some of those games also have featured strong performances, including lockdown defense on Gay and 28 points in 42 minutes of Monday’s victory over the Grizzlies. But Tom Thibodeau dropped Deng’s minutes to 34 Tuesday despite the Bulls playing without Carlos Boozer and Joakim Noah. “I don’t want to make excuses,” Deng said. “I felt good about the 3. I was wide open, had time. I tried to make sure I wasn’t short.” — Chicago Tribune

LeBron used Chicago Bulls?

Broadcaster Stephen A. Smith on LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh meeting with the Bulls last summer: “The reality is that the visits (with the Bulls) were bogus. There is no doubt about that. Bulls bench top free agent pick up

Power forward Carlos Boozer, the Bulls’ top free-agent acquisition this summer, was benched for the final 14 minutes. “You have to talk to Thibs about that,” Boozer said when asked about the benching after the game. “That was a coaching decision.” Tom Thibodeau did his best after the game to make it appear that the decision to bench his starting power forward had more to do with the team’s play than Boozer’s play. — Chicago Sun-Times

NBA owner chatting up women at Miami bar

While LeBron James was burning up the Knicks in New York, Michael Jordan — who said he would never have jumped to a team already full of all-stars, as James did — kicked back in Miami at the Gansevoort hotel with five friends. Jordan, smoking a cigar in his Air Jordans, was chatting up women at the bar with stories of his glory days with the Chicago Bulls, a spy said. One girl who was angling for his attention from across the table got her way and, after an hour of chatter, sat with Jordan for their final round of drinks. — NY Post

Phil Jax: Rockets wouldn’t have won if Jordan had played

Lakers coach Phil Jackson was asked if there should be an asterisk next to those Rockets championships because Michael Jordan had retired to play baseball when Houston won the first one and he came back midway through the 1994-95 season, when the Rockets won their second title. “Definitely. No doubt about it,” Jackson said, half-joking. “If the Bulls were whole, they would have won. It’s pretty much registered. … When Michael played, we won the championship.” He smiled. “No bias in that,” Jackson said. — LA Times

NBA star runs into NFL legend John Elway in steam room

Joakim Noah and John Elway in a steam room together? “Kind of awkward,” said the Bulls center. During the Bulls’ recent “circus trip,” the team spent Thanksgiving in Denver. “I was in the (hotel) steam room by myself,” Noah said Tuesday, “just focusing and enjoying the day off and Thanksgiving. And (Elway) just came in. I don’t know too many football players, but I know him. It was kind of weird, but it’s a true story. … It was a weird moment, kind of awkward. I was going to say something, but I thought maybe he just wants to spend some time alone to just chill.” — Chicago Tribune

Bulls Boozer backs off comeback

With both Carlos Boozer and Taj Gibson practicing Tuesday, the Bulls were at full strength for the first time since Oct. 1. Whether they will be Wednesday night against the Magic remains to be seen. “I may or may not play (Wednesday),” Boozer said. “I feel close. If not Wednesday, then I’m hoping this weekend for sure.” Speaking before Boozer, coach Tom Thibodeau offered an uncharacteristically strong prognosis for Boozer making his debut against the Magic. The Bulls travel to face the Celtics on Friday and play the Rockets at home Saturday. “He looked good, said he didn’t have any problems,” Thibodeau said. “His conditioning is really good and he did a good job in practice. … I can’t foresee any problems at this point. As long as he’s comfortable, we’re ready to get started.” This is for certain: Whenever Boozer returns from the fractured fifth metacarpal on his right hand, his presence makes the Bulls a better team. Just think of the possibilities with Derrick Rose. Along those lines, Boozer ensured his return will keep the Bulls a harmonious team too. “It’s definitely (Rose’s) team,” Boozer said. “He’s proved that. He’s earned that. He worked his butt off. You see how great of a season he’s had already.” — Chicago Tribune

Lakers have NBA’s most expensive tickets

The NBA’s average ticket prices have fallen for the second season in a row, according to Team Marketing Report, which tracks sports ticket prices. The average ticket price for non-premium seats for the NBA’s 2010/2011 season dropped 2.5% to $48.08. Last year’s average ticket prices fell 2.8%. Kobe Bryant’s defending champion Los Angeles Lakers boast the highest average ticket price at $95.21, up 2.1% from last year. The New York Knicks come in second ($88.66). The rest of the Top 5: the Boston Celtics are third ($68.55), Chicago Bulls are fourth ($64.25) and Portland Trail Blazers are fifth. What about LeBron James’ much ballyhooed Miami Heat? They have the 7th-highest average ticket price at $60.50, up 3.3% from last season. The Memphis Grizzlies have the cheapest average ticket prices at $23.18, down 3.9% from last season. — USA Today

Bulls getting superstar back at practice next week?

Tuesday will mark eight weeks since Carlos Boozer had surgery on his broken right hand, and that’s the optimal target date the power forward said the team doctors have established for him to begin participating in contact drills during practice. But even if Boozer practices  with the Bulls on Tuesday — which isn’t a sure thing — it’s doubtful he’ll be ready to play against the Magic. Boozer will need several practices to develop a rhythm after being idle for so long. It’s likely he won’t see any game action until at least Dec. 10 or 11 when the Bulls host the Los Angeles Lakers and Minnesota Timberwolves. In that scenario, Boozer would have four practices under his belt before playing in a game. The multiple practice sessions also will allow Boozer to get used to a protective guard on his hand. — Chicago Sun-Times

NBA Superstar plans lots of shopping on road trip

Derrick Rose says he will be all business on the Bulls’ seven-game, 14-day road swing. Well, almost. “Probably go to Macy’s. Definitely when you go to L.A., you have to go to Rodeo Drive,” Rose said Monday before the team flew to Houston. Asked about the Galleria in Houston, Rose said: “I would spend all day in there if I go in there. … I spend too much money. I just like having fun, though.” — Chicago Tribune

Bulls Kyle Korver has MRI on sore right knee

The Bulls have their two-week travel itinerary mapped out in great detail, from their team meetings to their buffet breakfasts following practices. But one unscheduled occurrence on Monday could affect the availability of guard Kyle Korver. He was scheduled to undergo an MRI on his sore right knee. Coach Tom Thibodeau said he was not clear just how or when Korver suffered the knee injury. “Something bumped in a game (Saturday night against Washington),” he said. — Chicago Tribune

Yanks George Steinbrenner was with NBA team in early 80s

George Steinbrenner’s name will be on the Baseball Hall of Fame Veterans Committee ballot next month. Many Chicagoans may not recall that Steinbrenner was one of the Bulls directors in 1981. Back then the team flew on commercial flights, and we recall seeing Steinbrenner sitting next to Bulls rookie guard Ray Blume during a delay. “Boy, that guy really knows a lot about sports,” Blume said naively after the flight, before being told the identity of the man in the dark suit. — Chicago Tribune

Nuggets Carmelo Anthony would like to play for Bulls?

The Nuggets play the Bulls tonight at the United Center and Carmelo Anthony was asked after the team’s shootaround this morning at Moody Bible Institute if he thought about what it would be like to play with the Bulls. “Maybe if I was a free agent I would let my mind wander, but I can’t do that right now,” he said. “I have to focus on being a Nugget and basketball. It wouldn’t be right if I let my mind wander and think about if I was here in Chicago. …  So far, Anthony, who can become a free agent after the season, has refused to sign a three-year, $65 million contract extension with the Nuggets, which has sparked all the trade rumors. But Anthony was asked if he could see a scenario where he stays in Denver if the team is playing well in February at the trading deadline. “Sure,” he said. “Why not? I don’t see why not.” He also had some nice words about the Bulls: “I don’t want this taken the wrong way, but who wouldn’t want to play with a young point guard like Derrick Rose? They have a good young big man in [Joakim] Noah and [Carlos] Boozer. They’ve got a good team.” — Chicago Sun-Times

NBA doesn’t think oversleeping, missing TV cameo is big deal

Derrick Rose stood at the Berto Center on Thursday morning, apologizing for missing a scheduled taping in New York City for CBS’ show “The Good Wife” on Tuesday. “Oh, my God,” Rose said when asked about it. “I overslept. It’s nothing big. You can ask anybody I work with, was I a problem on set or did I have a problem showing up? I always show up early. “I talked to the producers today and apologized to them,” Rose said. “He said it wasn’t really anything that big. I never thought it would be like that. That whole atmosphere is totally different. I’m not that type of guy where I try to big-time anyone or anything. It’s not in my character as a person. I’m sorry I did it.” “I’m sorry I missed it. If anything, I’d love to be on that show. They put a whole another twist on the story where (a driver) was ringing my (door)bell or somebody came out and said I wasn’t going in a disrespectful way. It wasn’t nothing like that.” Rose said his agent, B.J. Armstrong, planned to talk to the show’s producers. — Chicago Tribune

Bulls protect star Derrick Rose from talking about flaking on TV show

The Bulls declined comment, saying the organization played no role in the TV appearance. Derrick Rose spoke with reporters at the Berto Center on Wednesday, but a team spokesman said beforehand that he wouldn’t take questions on the subject. Perhaps Rose thought better of spending his day off flying back and forth to New York and hanging around a set. According to TV industry insiders, the show’s staff was upset about Rose being a no-show because they had to completely revamp their shooting schedule. But they wouldn’t comment publicly because they don’t want to burn bridges with Rose or the Bulls, a source said. Officials from ”The Good Wife” are still hoping to get Rose — or other Bulls — to appear on a future episode. — Chicago Sun-Times
