NFL star rookie has reputation of fumbling

The official NFL statistics say Bucs rookie RB LeGarrette Blount has fumbled three times and lost two, but that’s more than he is willing to accept. Blount had a big game against Seattle on Sunday, rushing for 164 yards on 18 attempts, but he fumbled for the second time in three games. He quickly hopped on the loose ball but doesn’t want to be associated with any more fumbles. Continue reading

Bucs could sell Cadillac?

“I’m more focused on a chance to step further into the playoffs,” said Bucs RB Cadillac Williams, who is an unrestricted free agent next year. “I’m going to try to approach it the same and try to get a win, but it’s been a blessing to be here. “The Tampa Bay Buccaneers organization, these fans, they have meant a lot to me. I’ve been here six years. I’ve had good times and down times, but through it all, I’ve always felt like the fans have had my back. As a player, that makes you feel good.” — Tampa Tribune

Bucs WR expected to leave Tampa?

Buccaneers WR Maurice Stovall went from a potential starter early in training camp to a fringe player because of the development of Tampa Bay’s younger receivers, and he’s made just two catches all season. He’ll be a free agent in 2011, and the Bucs have to decide if he’s worth bringing back as purely a special-teams contributor. One source said it wouldn’t be a surprise if Tampa Bay let him go, and Stovall may welcome a change of scenery since he’s not going to get a chance to start for the Bucs. He’s been a big disappointment since they drafted him in the third round in ’06. — Pro Football Weekly

Former Kansas coach Mark Mangino visits NFL team

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers had a special guest at Wednesday’s practice, a former Kansas football coach very familiar with the skills of quarterback Josh Freeman and cornerback Aqib Talib. Mark Mangino, who recently relocated to Naples with his wife after resigning as coach the Jayhawks from 2002-09, attended practice at the invitation of Tampa Bay head coach Raheem Morris. “I was sitting at home in Naples when Raheem called and asked what I was doing,” said Mangino, who plans to attend Sunday’s home game against the Lions. “He was nice enough to invite me up here to see practice. There’s a lot of energy out on this field and there’s a focused bunch of players here. The Buccaneers are an impressive, young group.” Mangino coached Talib at Kansas before the Bucs selected Talib in the first round of the 2008 draft. Talib leads Tampa Bay with six interceptions, but is sidelined for the rest of the season with a hip injury. “Aqib Talib might be one of the greatest competitors I’ve ever coached,” Mangino said. “He’s a heck of a talent.” — Tampa Tribune

Colts have NFL’s best offensive line

The New York Life Protection Index was created by sports information leader STATS to provide a composite gauge for this undervalued component of the game. While the New York Life Protection Index is calculated using a proprietary formula, the fundamentals are comprised of the length of a team’s pass attempts combined with penalties by offensive linemen, sacks allowed and quarterback hurries and knockdowns. The New York Life Protection Index is updated weekly throughout the regular season. — Stats Inc.

NFL player arrested by taser using police

Bucs starting LB Geno Hayes’ arrest early Monday won’t affect his status for Sunday’s game against the Lions, coach Raheem Morris said. Hayes, 23, was arrested on charges of disorderly conduct and trespassing at 2 a.m. at Tampa’s Blue Martini nightclub, 2223 N West Shore Blvd. in International Plaza. Police used a Taser on Hayes after he became aggressive with them during an incident that started with another man, police said. Hayes overheard that a security guard wouldn’t let his friend into the lounge for being underdressed. Police said Hayes pushed a police officer out of the way to stand between her and two disruptive men. — St. Petersburg Times

Former NFL player arrested driving out of strip club parking lot

Former Tampa Bay Buccaneers first-round draft pick Keith McCants was arrested on a possession of cocaine charge early Wednesday as he was driving out of a strip club parking lot, police said. McCants was pulling out of Tina’s House of Angels, 3080 34th Street N., about 12:15 a.m. because he failed to stop while leaving a private drive, said police spokesman Mike Puetz. They also noticed that McCants and a passenger, Christina Shamika Campbell, 28, were not wearing their seat belts. After they stopped the car, police saw a crack pipe in the center console of McCant’s 1999 Chevy Tahoe. After searching the vehicle, police found one piece of crack in Campbell’s purse. Police arrested McCants and Campbell and seized the vehicle. The 42-year-old former linebacker and defensive end’s address was listed. — St. Petersburg Times

Arrest warrant issed for former NFL player

An arrest warrant was issued today for former Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive lineman Arron Sears after he failed to show up for his arraignment on state felony battery charges. Sears was arrested last month after he was found wandering a busy Citrus Park road on an outstanding battery on a law enforcement officer warrant. He was committed for a mental health evaluation. The battery charge stems from a June confrontation with a Tampa police officer. — Tampa Tribune

NFL team has lost FOUR starters to season-ending injuries in last two weeks

The pain in cornerback Aqib Talib’s hip during Sunday’s game against the Falcons was the result of a tendon that tore from the bone. Center Jeff Faine tore the triceps in his right arm. Neither player will need surgery, and both are expected to make a full recovery. But there’s no apparent end to the suffering for the Bucs. For the second straight week, coach Raheem Morris’ team lost two starters to the season-ending injured reserve list. “There’s no place for excuses; those young men have to be replaced,” Morris said Monday. “They’re always tough losses when you lose anyone.” — St. Petersburg Times

NFL star WON’T be punished for profanity-laced postgame verbal altercation with official

The Bucs received word that cornerback Aqib Talib won’t be fined for a profanity-laced postgame verbal altercation with a game official Sunday. Talib, whom teammates had to restrain after the official responded to the cornerback’s profane comments with one of his own, was protesting a pass interference call that positioned the Ravens for a touchdown late in the first half that proved to be the winner. Talib and the official talked after the play and as the team and the officiating crew made their way off the field through the same tunnel after the game. Based on the NFL’s statement, the official won’t be disciplined, either. — St. Petersburg Times

NFL investigating star players profanity-laced tirade with official

The NFL is “looking into” a profanity-laced altercation between Bucs cornerback Aqib Talib and a member of the officiating crew after the Bucs’ 17-10 loss at Baltimore, said Greg Aiello, the league’s senior vice president of public relations. Talib expressed displeasure with a pass-interference penalty called on rookie Myron Lewis late in the second quarter by field judge Boris Cheek, and the two exchanged words on the field. After the game, while walking through the tunnel to the locker room, Talib volleyed a series of expletives at the officiating crew, whose locker room was a short distance from that of the Bucs. That prompted an unidentified member of referee Carl Cheffers’ crew to respond, “You play like a (expletive).” Talib became more demonstrative and was restrained by teammates, then he responded by telling the official, “I’ll (hit) you in your (expletive) mouth.”St. Petersburg Times

NFL player gives team results of urine test after DUI charge

Rookie WR Mike Williams, charged early Friday with driving under the influence, voluntarily gave the Bucs organization the results of a urine test taken with an independent agency only hours later to help prove his innocence. Williams, who was charged after failing a field sobriety test with a blood-alcohol level below the limit of 0.08 at which the state presumes impairment, offered to take an optional urine test with law enforcement officials. Coach Raheem Morris said Monday that he also went through an independent agency to show the team the results by Friday morning. “We’re very pleased with the results that we got,” Morris said. “We’re confident that he’s completely clean, and we’ll let our law enforcement do their due process.” Morris added that the test was for several substances, including those banned by the NFL, and the organization will fine Williams “a lot of money” for the incident. If Williams’ pending test comes back clean, the case could be thrown out. — St. Petersburg Times

NFL QB drops interceptions by 13

When you climb inside the numbers, this is the most dramatic change in Tampa Bay from last season. Josh Freeman went from throwing an interception on 6.2 percent of his passes to throwing one on 1.7 percent. To put that in real numbers: Freeman has thrown 290 passes, exactly the same number he threw last season. He had 18 interceptions in 2009. He has thrown five this season. — St. Petersburg Times

10.4% of NFL games have been blacked out

One of the reasons the NFL has been pumping out release after release bragging about their glowing television ratings is to take attention away from all of those empty seats in their stadiums. Through the first 10 weeks, 15 of the league’s 144 games, or 10.4 percent, were blacked out because they failed to sell out. Through 144 games last year, there were just 10 blackouts. The year before, only three. Notice a trend? That blackout number figures to swell in the second half of the season as teams fall out of the playoff hunt. The Tampa Bay Bucs have had a league-high five blackouts already. The Oakland Raiders are second with four, followed by the San Diego Chargers (three), Buffalo Bills (two) and Detroits Lions (one). The 2-7 Bengals will join the Blackout Club this week. Their home game against the Bills failed to sell out. The Chargers’ Monday night game against the Broncos also is likely to be blacked out. And the Jacksonville Jaguars, who somehow sold out their first five home games after failing to sell out a single home game last season, have asked for an extension to avoid a blackout of their game against the Browns. — Philadelphia Daily News

Ex-NFL player charged with battery on officer, needs mental health

Former Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive lineman Arron Sears grabbed an officer’s arms while being placed under the state’s Baker Act, ran from the Tampa General Hospital room and had to be subdued by a Taser, police said. “When somebody is this large and is mentally unstable, these are the circumstances that sometimes lead an officer to use deadly force,” Tampa police spokeswoman Laura McElroy said. “In this circumstance, thankfully, he was able to subdue him with a Taser.” Sears was arrested Saturday on a warrant connected to the June 6 incident, McElroy said. Sears, 26, was charged with battery on a law enforcement officer without causing serious injury. “It was the hope of the officer that pressing the charges would lead to court-mandated mental health counseling to get Sears the help he needed,” McElroy said.Tampa Tribune

NFL team draws less than 40,000 fans

The Bucs had an announced crowd of 44,264, but the actual attendance, according to the Tampa Sports Authority, was 39,781. The game was blacked out on local television, per NFL rules, as it was well short of a Raymond James Stadium sellout. — St. Petersburg Times

Bucs Raheem Morris not worried about lame duck status

Raheem Morris is approaching the end of his two guaranteed years as Bucs coach. There is an option for a third if the team’s owner, the Glazer family, exercises it. Ownership has not approached the coach about signing an extension, according to Morris. But after a 5-3 start with one of the youngest teams in the NFL, Morris said he isn’t worried about his future. “I’ve been Mr. One-Year Contract Boy for a long time,” he said. “I kind of like being a free agent. It makes you hotter. “A lot of people are not confident in that situation. But I’ve got a lot of confidence and belief in myself and in what we’re doing that things will work itself out.” — St. Petersburg Times

NFL finds parity with no salary cap

Increasing player payroll appears to have limited correlation to team success.  In this year of parity so far, there is little to take away in terms of hard line rules to guide us, but let’s take a look: Of the low-spending teams, some are doing well (Buccaneers, Chiefs, Titans), some middling (Jaguars, Chargers) and some poorly (Bills, Panthers, Broncos).  Many of these teams have used the uncapped year to take advantage of the lack of a floor for spending, using 2010 as a year to bring debt under control and gird for the next system, whenever that may be.  A few of these teams are spending as little as $85 million when the previous Cap floor was $109 million. Of the higher-spending teams, some are doing well (Raiders), some middling (Bears, Vikings, Redskins, Dolphins) and some poorly (Cowboys, 49ers). — Forbes

ESPN analyst will make $5 mil in 2011 from NFL team

The Bucs still owe former coach Jon Gruden $5 million for the 2011 season. Morris replaced Gruden, who was fired after the 2008 season. Gruden, currently an analyst for ESPN’s Monday Night Football, already is being mentioned as a candidate for the Cowboys head coaching job, among others. If Gruden were to take an NFL coaching job, the Bucs would be off the hook for his salary or would at least only have to make up any shortfall from his next coaching job. — St. Petersburg Times

NFL’s least shown team has been seen in just 2.9 states a week

The Dallas Cowboys and Minnesota Vikings have a combined 4-12 record and roughly zero chance to make the postseason. But lucky you, they’ve been on your television nearly every weekend this season.

A look at every NFL team shows the Vikings, on average, have been broadcast in a league-leading 38.3 states each week they play, edging the Cowboys by 0.4. The Indianapolis Colts, New York Giants and Philadelphia Eagles round out the top five, while the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are last at 2.9 states a week, according to The506.com, a website that uses local listings to track where teams are broadcast.

NFL has most balance since 1981

For the first time since 1981, no NFL team has fewer than two losses midway thought the season. Las Vegas Sports Consultants provides wagering lines to Las Vegas sports books, and the odds to win Super Bowl XLV have more teams than usual at low odds. Here they are: Steelers the 6-to-1 favorite; Giants, Jets, Patriots and Ravens each 7-to-1; Colts, Packers and Saints each 8-to-1; Falcons 9-to-1; Eagles 18-to-1; Vikings 25-to-1; Chiefs 30-to-1; Bears, Chargers and Titans each 35-to-1 (very tempting); Dolphins, Redskins and Texans each 50-to-1; Buccaneers, 49ers, Rams and Seahawks each 60-to-1; Raiders 75-to-1; Cardinals 150-to-1; Bengals, Jaguars and Lions each 250-to-1; Broncos and Browns each 500-to-1; Cowboys 1,000-to-1; Panthers 3,000-to-1; and Bills 5,000-to-1. — Rochester Democrat & Chronicle

Raheem Morris helps sell Bucs tickets

Maybe coach Raheem Morris should help in the ticket office. He seems to have his sales pitch down pat. Asked Monday whether the Bucs were creating a buzz with recent performances, Morris had this to say: “If you came to our game (Sunday), you saw a flea-flicker, an onside kick, a reverse, you saw your banzai blitzes, all-out blitzes, 50-yard touchdown (passes), back-shoulder catches in the end zone, a fourth-and-inches that we got stopped on. … It’s just an exciting brand of football that we’re trying to sell to people. You have to have a buzz about it. Coming out of the game, you all felt like you watched a good game.” — St. Petersburg Times

Falcons Matt Ryan stumbles against Bucs

Despite a 3-1 record, Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan has not had much success against Tampa Bay. In the four games, he has an average quarterback rating of 61.05 and has thrown six interceptions against two touchdowns. Tampa Bay has also sacked him six times. “To me, it’s not a surprise that they are leading the league in interceptions,” Ryan said. The Buccaneers have 14 interceptions, led by cornerback Aqib Talib’s five. Ryan has thrown only five interceptions this season, but knows the Bucs like to jump routes.  “Specifically, we need to be sound in what we do,” Ryan said. “Go out there and make good decisions and be accurate with the football.” — St. Petersburg Times

Bucs looking for respect in Atlanta

First place in the NFC South is on the line Sunday in Atlanta, but Bucs T Donald Penn said a win over the Falcons could go a long way in the club earning the respect he believes it hasn’t received so far. “I think a lot of people are doubting us, in the media, not giving us our respect,” he said. “We’re not really listening … though. I think this really would make a statement if we come out with a win here. We have our work cut out for us, but I think we’ll really make a big statement, maybe we’ll get a little respect in this league.” — St. Petersburg Times

NFL player gets text messages DURING game

While Bucs RB LeGarrette Blount was running over Arizona defenders, his cell phone was in the locker room taking messages. “I heard from a lot of people,” Blount said. “I had probably 60 text messages on my phone when I got into the locker room. And probably 40 of them were from numbers that I’ve never seen before. But, of course, a lot of them were from like my mom and my dad. They were texting me during the game, (as if) I’m going to get them. I saw a text message like: ‘Hey, it’s halftime. You’re playing well.’ I had a few text messages that said, ‘Hey, I just saw you jump over a guy.’ I didn’t get any of these until after the game. I’m like, ‘Why do y’all text me during the game like I’m going to reply?’ But I guess it’s good to hear from a lot of people.” There were some messages, however, that ranged from weird to creepy. “I had a couple from, I guess, some Buccaneers fan who said, ‘Hey, my kid had on your jersey,’ ” Blount said. “I was like, ‘I didn’t even know they had my jersey in stores.’ I had a few of those. And then I had one saying, ‘Hey, is it okay if I text you?’ I was like, ‘I don’t even know who you are.’ I don’t know who put my number out there.” — St. Petersburg Times

Chiefs Thomas Jones is NFL’s greatest journeyman RB

Kansas City running back Thomas Jones became the first player in NFL history to rush for 500 yards in a season with five different teams. It’s a testament to just how consistent Jones is no matter what system he get plugged into. He’s currently on track to get his sixth straight 1,000-yard season. The teams he’s been on include the Cardinals, Buccaneers, Bears, Jets and now the Chiefs. — Vegas Insider
