Bills think they can win with QB Ryan Fitzpatrick

Bills GM Buddy Nix reiterated the recent comments by coach Chan Gailey on the Bills’ quarterback situation. They believe they can win with Ryan Fitzpatrick but they will keep all their options open in the draft. “We certainly like Fitz,” Nix said. “[His performance] wasn’t more than we expected because I knew Chan would get him to play better. We counted on that and he did. I really like him. I think he’s got a lot of qualities you need. We just need to keep putting good players out there.” — Buffalo News

NFL legend goes 16-year career without surgery, tears Achillies on Persion Gulf visit

Andre Reed never had to undergo surgery in his 16-year NFL career. He played in 234 games, and he missed just three in his first 10 seasons. Reed was renowned for his rigorous workout regimen. His former teammates still marvel at his conditioning. Nine days shy of his 47th birthday, the guy still looks capable of going over the middle. So it figures. Last month, Reed visited the Persian Gulf with a group of ex-NFL players, when he was playing a flag football game with U.S. servicemen and

Dave Wannstedt could return to NFL as assistant head coach?

Former NFL and college head coach Dave Wannstedt is meeting with Bills head coach Chan Gailey at One Bills Drive today to discuss the possibility of joining the Buffalo coaching staff. Wannstedt recently was forced to resign under pressure as head coach at the University of Pittsburgh after six seasons in that job. Wannstedt has a close professional relationship with Gailey. If Wannstedt were to join the Bills, it likely would be in some type of oversight role, probably with an assistant head coach title.  — Buffalo News

Bills running back needs 108 yards for 1,000

Fred Jackson’s quest for 1,000 yards rushing is the one of the few noteworthy milestones on the line for the Buffalo Bills in Sunday’s season finale. Jackson needs 108 yards against the New York Jets to hit the 1,000 total for a second straight season. The Bills’ offensive linemen are not taking the achievement lightly. “I’d love it for him,” said Bills center Geoff Hangartner. “Last year he got it in the last game of the year, and it meant a lot to us last year. It would definitely mean a lot to us. To have back-to-back 1,000 yard rushing years is a great accomplishment. He’s done everything that’s been asked of him this year.” — Buffalo News

Bills can’t give LB Posluszny new contract?

Negotiating with LB Paul Posluszny during this season hasn’t been a realistic option for the Bills. Donte Whitner wants to return to Bills

Safety Donte Whitner’s agent has had ongoing negotiations with the Bills. Whitner, 25, is having his most productive season. He’s leading all NFL defensive backs in tackles with 125, the fifth-highest total in the league. Whitner very much would like to return to the Bills — if the team makes him an offer he views as satisfactory. It’s believed he’s looking for a deal that would put him in the top five at the safety position, in the $7 million-a-year range. It’s believed the Bills so far have been offering well below that — in the $5 million-a-year range. — Buffalo News

Local restaurateur buys 8,000 NFL tickets to avoid TV blackout

Restaurateur Russell J. Salvatore is stirring the pot of holiday generosity. And Buffalo Bills fans are sure to eat it up. When the 77-year-old Salvatore learned that the football team’s final home game of the season might not be televised Sunday because the Thursday afternoon ticket sellout deadline would be missed, he made a last-minute purchase of 7,000 to 8,000 tickets. “The timing couldn’t be better. It’s Christmas. It’s the last game of the season. What a way to go,” he said. Usually, it’s a major local corporation, not an individual, that will buy the unsold football tickets to dodge the dreaded blackout. Three games this season failed to sell out and, as a result, were not aired on television. But thanks to Salvatore, at 1 p.m. Sunday, Western New Yorkers will be able to watch the Bills and the New England Patriots on WIVB-TV, Channel 4, from the comfort of their homes or local gathering places. — Buffalo News

Former Bills coach could land in Denver?

Falcons offensive coordinator Mike Mularkey, 49, has let it be known that he’s interested in becoming a head coach again. There could be a number of openings next year — Cincinnati, San Francisco, Denver and Carolina — and Mularkey’s name has already popped up in Denver. Mularkey was head coach of the Buffalo Bills in 2004 and 2005. He was 9-7 in 2004, Buffalo’s last winning season before dropping to 5-11.  — Fox Sports

Bills contract talks stall with star player

A week ago, strong safety Donte Whitner said he was negotiating a new contract with the Buffalo Bills and expressed optimism that a deal would get done before the end of this season. A lot has changed in a week. Whitner now has a more pessimistic view of his future with the team, saying Thursday that contract talks have stalled to the point where he believes this could be his final season in Buffalo. “Things are not going the way I want them to go or getting it done,” a dejected-looking Whitner said in the locker room before practice. “It might come to me actually hitting the free agent market because we’re far off. We’re far off in dollars, we’re far off in everything, so that’s what it’s going to be.” — Buffalo News

NFL’s Amish Rifle will shave beard after season-finale

The days are numbered for the shaggy beard of Ryan Fitzpatrick. The Bills’ quarterback, who has been growing his beard all season, said he will shave it off after the season-finale against the New York Jets on Jan. 2. “Yes, definitely,” Fitzpatrick said when asked if he would shed his growth. Fitzpatrick’s beard is very full around the mouth and chin and splotchy on the sides. Bills cornerback Drayton Florence has been calling him “the Amish Rifle.” Fitzpatrick was asked Wednesday if he has been invited to take part in any Civil War reenactment festivities. (He hasn’t.) “I think there are probably plenty of people who want me to trim it or cut it up, especially of the female variety,” Fitzpatrick said. “I’ve gotten a lot of different comments and stuff, [like] ‘how does your wife deal with that?’ But it’s part of it. She’s along for the ride.” Asked if his wife is counting the days until he shaves it off, Fitz said: “Yeah. I think so.” — Buffalo News
