Astros give under .500 pitcher $34 mil

The Houston Astros and left-handed pitcher Wandy Rodriguez have reached agreement on a three-year contract through the 2013 season, Astros General Manager Ed Wade announced today. The deal buys out Rodriguez’s final arbitration season and at least his first two free agent years. The agreement becomes finalized once Rodriguez passes a physical, which is scheduled for Thursday with Astros team physician Dr. David Lintner.
The contract is guaranteed for the 2011-13 seasons and carries a vesting option. The three-year pact guarantees Rodriguez $34 million. If the contract becomes vested, it will guarantee Rodriguez $44.5 million. Rodriguez has a 62-64 career record.– Astros.com

Clint Barmes to play SS with Astros

Clint Barmes, 31, has played shortstop and second base in a tumultuous tenure with the Rockies. He said that after conversations with Astros general manager Ed Wade and manager Brad Mills, he expects to play shortstop, which had been manned by Tommy Manzella and Angel Sanchez last season. “I feel like I’m an everyday shortstop,” Barmes said hours after being traded from the organization that drafted him in 2000. “I’ve always looked at myself as a shortstop playing second base.” — Houston Chronicle

Investment bank retained to assist in the sale of MLB club

Astros owner Drayton McLane has retained the services of the investment bank Allen & Company to assist in the sale of the team, according to two people with knowledge of the arrangement. McLane, who could not be reached for comment Thursday night, has owned the Astros since 1992. Having entertained on and off for at least a couple of years the idea of selling, he has ramped up efforts recently. In partnering with Allen & Company and specifically industry giant Steve Greenberg — the son of Baseball Hall of Famer Hank Greenberg and a partner in the firm — McLane has secured the services of one of the foremost brokers of deals in sports and entertainment business. It is a much more aggressive approach than he has taken in the past when he has simply said he would consider selling if the right offer came along. The Astros could sell for a figure in the range of $700 million to $800 million, according to a person with knowledge of the situation. — Houston Chronicle

Conor Biggio lived a dream earlier this year with his father by winning a state championship. Craig Biggio said it has been special to be a part of his sons’ lives in the last two years, since he spent so much time away from them while playing with the Astros. “As a dad that’s been an absentee dad for most of (Conor’s) life until the last four years, it’s been great (to be a part of this),” Biggio said. “You can’t ever go back in time, even though we all wish we could, but I wanted to take advantage of these four years before they were gone. “For me, it’s the greatest move I’ve ever made.” — Houston Chronicle

Milt Thompson, who spent more than five seasons as the hitting coach of the Phillies before being let go in July, has interviewed for the Astros’ hitting coach position that became vacant when his former teammate, Jeff Bagwell, decided not to return. Wade confirmed Thompson interviewed, but stopped short of naming any other candidates. — Astros.com

Astros writers’ press box will be moved to make room for new club

Twriters’ press box, which sits at the top of the dugout boxes, will be moved up one level to be adjacent to the broadcast media area. The area behind home plate that currently houses the writers’ press box will be transformed into an area for premium season-ticket holders, allowing the Astros to generate more revenue. “I guess I’d call it a hip club area,” Gardner said. — Astros.com

Astros getting MLBs second largest video board

Minute Maid Park will undergo significant renovations this offseason, including the installation of a 54-by-124-foot video board that will be the second-largest in Major League Baseball, smaller than only the one in Kansas City’s Kauffman Stadium. Pam Gardner, the Astros’ president of business operations, went before the Harris County-Houston Sports Authority on Thursday morning and shared news of the renovations. The Astros, who lease the ballpark from the authority, will pay all of the estimated $10 million to $12 million price tag. “It’s been 11 years since it opened, so it’s time,” Gardner said. — Astros.com

Astros dealing Carlos Lee?

Carlos Lee, 1B, Astros — The former left fielder is now a first basemen, and the move may help the Astros in two ways: By increasing Lee’s trade value and making their outfield more athletic. It’s going to be tough to deal Lee, who has a no-trade clause, loves Houston, and has $37 million over two years left on his contract. He will likely start at first base next season over youngster Brett Wallace. If Lee can play first base for a National League team, David Ortiz could as well. — Boston Globe

Astros AAA team moves to Oklahoma City

Geographically, at least, the Astros found the next best thing. Four days after their former Class AAA affiliate — the Round Rock Express — signed a deal with the Texas Rangers, the Astros went into business with the Oklahoma City RedHawks. The clubs made official Monday a two-year deal that will make Oklahoma City the home of the Astros’ top minor league club. The Astros also extended their player development contract with short-season Class A Tri-City through 2012. With most Class AAA teams locked into player development contracts, the choices were limited for the Astros, with Las Vegas likely the other option. But they ended up in a place that gives them relative geographic proximity (roughly 450 miles from Houston) and one of the best facilities in the minor leagues. It also takes them back to the home of their top affiliate from the inception of the franchise in 1962 through 1972. — Houston Chronicle

MLB’s Fastest Player 2010

Rays LF Carl Crawford was chosen the fastest player in Sports Illustrated’s poll of major-leaguers with 33 percent of the vote, racing past Houston’s Michael Bourn (12%), Florida’s Emilio Bonifacio (9%), Pittsburgh’s Andrew McCutchen (8%) and the Mets’ Jose Reyes (6%). So who really is the fastest? “It would definitely be a close race,” Crawford said. “And I’m always going to pull for myself.” — St. Petersburg Times

Matt Lindstrom wants Astros closer role next year

Pitching in a setup role for the first time this season, Matt Lindstrom said he doesn’t have aspirations of returning to the closer’s role by the end of 2010. “Maybe next year,” Lindstrom said. “Right now it’s not really a goal of mine, considering we only have 25 games left. I just want to be a factor.” He’s been a factor and a positive one for the Astros since returning from the disabled list Aug. 1. Brandon Lyon had taken over the closer’s role, and then the DL move was made as Lindstrom had been dealing with back spasms since before his trying week and a half. “I feel good right now especially my arm,” Lindstrom, 30, said. “That’s the best thing as far as health’s concerned is that I don’t have any problems with my arm.” In the long term he would like to be a closer, but his role as Lyon’s setup man is one to which he’s becoming accustomed to quickly. – Houston Chronicle

Astros owner was open to Oswalt deal with Cards

Houston Astros owner Drayton McLane said Wednesday that he would not have vetoed any deal that sent former ace Roy Oswalt to the Cardinals because of the teams sharing the same division. The talks just never got to that point, he said. “That was not a roadblock,” McLane said. “I think (trading within the division) used to be something you avoided. That’s not how I viewed it this time. We had discussions with the Cardinals, and it just did not work — it did not work for either team. It just never really materialized. They talked two or three times, and it never got close to being a deal.” McLane acknowledged that Oswalt was “excited about the potential of being with the Cardinals” and that he expressed that wish to Houston ownership. McLane said the players offered by the Cardinals, who included at least one major-league player, did not cause negotiations to falter. — St. Louis Post-Dispatch

Astros pitcher to have abdominal surgery

After hitting snags once in a simulated game and once in Tuesday night’s rehab start, Astros righthander Brian Moehler has opted for surgery. Moehler will undergo the procedure on Sept. 1 in Philadelphia to repair a muscle in his lower abdomen. The procedure will be done by Dr. Bill Meyers, whom Moehler saw for a second opinion on his groin and who discovered the abdominal issue. Moehler had hoped to delay the abdominal surgery until after the year and pitch through a groin injury in which a tendon was removed from the bone. But he felt soreness and had to leave his rehab start for Class AAA Round Rock after three innings and 31 pitches. — Houston Chronicle

Former Astros manager doesn’t feel sorry for Roger Clemens if he lied to Congress

Former Astros manager Phil Garner wants to believe his former ace but won’t feel sorry for him if the allegations prove true. “I’m saddened,” Garner said. “I’ve always been a Roger Clemens fan, and I still am. I don’t want to see him have to go through this. But if he has lied, then I’m sure he’s going to pay a hefty price for that. And if he has done steroids, I think he’ll pay a hefty price for that in terms of what will happen to him in the media and how he will be portrayed. “And that’s unfortunate, because he had a terrific career, and I hate that he is going through all this.” Garner cautioned against jumping to conclusions or subscribing to the guilty-until-proven-innocent mentality. “But if it turns out that we can conclusively figure out that he did do steroids, then I don’t feel sorry for him in that regard, and certainly he should not lie in front of (Congress),” Garner said. ” If that proves to be the case, then I think obviously Rocket will have to pay the price for that.” — Houston Chronicle
