Giants manager worried about catcher getting paralyzed

Bruce Bochy played 298 games behind the plate during his nine seasons catching, but now he believes the rules must be changed. The Giants manager continuing to comment to the SF Chronicle on the season ending injury to Buster Posey, said Major League Baseball could see a player end up immobilized.

“We’re close to getting someone hit in the neck and getting paralyzed,” Bochy said. “There’s got to be a way the catcher is not so vulnerable.”

Bochy says its time for baseball to change its rule book.

“I think it’s time we do something for the catchers. These (runners) are getting bigger, faster and stronger. The number of injuries happening to catchers, you look in the last year – there were 12 serious injuries to catchers. It’s getting (to) the point where we need to explore doing something to protect the catchers.”
