Padres bench young star

Chase Headley’s slumping bat has him riding the Padres bench. Jorge Cantu has started at third base the past two games as San Diego tries to get Headley turned around. SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE reports his average dropped down to .211 after an earlier 2-24 slump.

Padres manager Bud Black had told Headley Sunday afternoon that Cantu would be starting Monday night’s game. But a second straight nigbht off caught Headley by surprise. “Don’t read anything into this,” said Black. “Call it a manager’s decision. You’ll likely see Chase back in there Wednesday afternoon.”
