It’s clear Peyton Manning isn’t pleased with how the NFL’s decision to reposition the umpire this season has worked thus far. “I’ve talked to some other quarterbacks and they said they’ve had similar frustrations with it,” Manning said Monday. “The challenge situation is very real when you try to hurry it up to avoid the coach getting a great look at it. “Let’s just give them an HD, slow-motion look now if we have to take that much time.”
Manning’s sarcasm also was evident when he discussed how the new alignment might make it more difficult for the Colts or any offense to catch the defense trying to substitute. The Colts have been adept at frequently using that tactic to pick up an easy 5-yard penalty on the defense. “Twelve men on the field . . . what about that guy getting off the field?” Manning asked rhetorically. “Do you just sit there and watch him go off the field? Do you turn back (to the umpire) and check and say, ‘Hey, are you ready?’ “If that’s what we have to do, that’s what we have to do.” — Indy Star
