Scrabble’s top “athlete” will win $10k

Is Scrabble a sport? Most people would say heck no, yet 400 people will gather at the “2010 National Scrabble Championship” in Dallas this August to compete for the title as best Scrabble player.

“Word Athletes” are from 42 states and four countries will be on hand to test their vocabulary skills.

Players at the highest level memorize the 120,000 word Official Scrabble Players Dictionary and often devote several hours a day to studying.

There is no elimination, and everyone plays a staggering 31 games over four and a half days. The event is set for August 7th, at the Hotel InterContinental in Dallas.

The defending champion is  a mortgage underwriter from Portland, OR.  Dave Wiegand is his name, he also won the 2005 National Scrabble Championship in Reno, NV.

If you think this is just for fun, think again, the winner will get $10,000 in cold hard cash.
