The trade speculation stems primarily from Scott Podsednik’s contract status. Only about $650,000 remains on his $1.65 million contract, which makes him an attractive acquisition. The Royals hold an option for next year at $2 million, but Podsednik can void it by getting just 104 more plate appearances. Another factor: Podsednik projects as a Type B free agent. That would permit the Royals, if they offer arbitration, to get a draft pick between the first and second rounds if Podsednik signs elsewhere as a free agent. Of course, Podsednik could also stick around. “I like it here,” he said. “We’ll what the situation is. I don’t know what the Royals are thinking. We’ll probably have to address it at the end of the season and see where they stand and see what other opportunities come (available) and make our decision from there.” — KC Star
