At age 48, former Cowboys star Nate Newton’s life has changed in a big way. He has lost — are you ready for this? — 133 pounds in a little more than three months following bariatric surgery. Now when Big Nate drops by a local restaurant… no one
recognizes him because he has gone from 396 pounds in mid-April to 263 pounds on his most recent weigh-in. “I was going to be either big, fat and happy or smaller, healthier and happy. Either way, I was going to be happy,” said Newton, a six-time Pro Bowler who played left guard on all three Cowboys Super Bowl teams of the ’90s. The heaviest the 6-foot-3 Newton weighed was 411 pounds near the end of his career in Dallas in 1998. “It can really get on top of you,” said Newton, who now has a 40-inch waist. It used to be 56 inches. “Na
te is a courageous individual. He has far exceeded expectations within the time frame, reducing his BMI [body mass index] from 50 when we went to surgery to 33 now,” said Dr. David Kim, who performed the bariatric procedure April 19. It’s called a “gastric sleeve,” in which Newton’s stomach capacity was drastically reduced. –Fort Worth Star-Telegram
